too bad too a matte case would have been sweet... would have eliminated my complaint of the device being too slippery feeling to hold properly

Apple is trying to prevent leaks I reckon. It was most likely done for different reasons and the fact that this case was leaked made their decision that much easier.

I would've soooo loved the matte case. I am not upgrading for the one simple reason that it looks the same. I want everyone to 'know' I paid a buttload of money upgrading my iPhone.

I wonder if Apple did have something better, but one of two things happened:

a) Apple deemed the Palm Pre not a threat.

B) ATT has pissed Apple off and Apple will be releasing a new phone at the end of their obligation with ATT.

I tend to think it maybe a little of both. I think ATT is not taking to Apple's ideas for pricing too. Only time will tell.

I don't think it was a real case.

If you do a search on the FCC website for Apple, you will see their most recent application before WWDC were in March 2009 for a product with FCC ID A1301 and A1302. I think it WAS a lucky guess.

Maybe the launch of the Pre on the 6th forced them to use the same casing so they could pump out more inventory fast. Maybe we'll see a matte case later this year, kind of like the premium choice, like the White iPhone 3G 16 GB was.

Thoughts?

The image was leaked in February.

Apple is getting away with quite a lot. The App store alone is a huge deal, there is NO revenue for AT&T from it. Do you think other carriers will sing that tune? Another thing is that after iPhone goes to other carriers, they won't want to bend their backs over, because they won't be exclusive. Letting Apple distribute over iTunes/app store wouldn't even be a matter of competing, since they get no money from it.

My thoughts:

Apple hasn't announced iPhone 3,1. Anyone else catch that?
Possibly a matte OLED (maybe iChat) iPhone pro ish thing released holiday season. For some reason the 3g S doesn't seem like a TRUE sequel. My guess: 32gb iPhone pro with iChat and oled screen and matte case for around 600 dollars Christmas time. (or 500 if at&t drops price of unsubsidized by 100)

Which means I'll be holding off a little while before jumping to the 3G S. I want a matte finish, and if waiting say more or less ~3 months is going to give it to me, so be it.

I'm guessing it was an idea during the prototype design stage, and then later they decided to just keep the current case because it was more efficient and cost effective and safer to stick with the current case.

This does, however, give us an insight into what the iPhone designers want to see in the future.

Darned shame. I was so excited about it.

Now what about the pics that showed a speaker at the very top next to the bezel? That sure looked real.
I'll be expecting it for the next gen.

Apple wouldn't unleash a new iPhone 6 months from now - would they? I'd die.

lol..now everyone WANTS matte..haha

when it was a potential feature..everyone hated it.

ill take the new phone either way!

maybe it doesn't look good in white, notice how the leaks for the matte were only black...in the last minute they pulled it because it would mean only black iphones??

ug this makes me even madder if apple threw out the matte case at the last minute :/

It really seems like Apple held back from what was originally planned (and the rumors of early Spring) due to rushing releases because of fear of competition and the economy. It seems as if Apple made some rush decisions 4-12 weeks ago. As I mentioned in another thread, I believe Apple was going to announce BR (8.2 w/ Blu-ray references, would have coincided with new Pro lineup, etc.) but didn't, perhaps because it wouldn't have been ready in time. I also believe Apple was going to use the matte case, but didn't, perhaps because it wouldn't have been ready as soon. Also, the $99 3G seems like a rushed decision to quickly eliminate Palm from the game immediately. SL is shipping without Marble and BR support, perhaps so it could be out before Windows 7. At the $29 price point it will seem like a bargain compared to Windows 7 upgrade and full prices.

Apple slashed prices across the board.

Apple was scared, but now that it's far more competitive in terms of notebook pricing and phone features, I expect Mac marketshare to increase and iPhone marketshare to sharply increase. In the Fall when the 64GB iPod Touch is released, Apple was maintain its already huge PMP marketshare and ward off Zune HD.

I wish they would have gone this route.. this is one of the main reasons I will not be upgrading to a 3G S, it looks EXACTLY the same as what I have now.. and I never used a video camera when I had it so the 3G S is a flop to me, although twice the processor speed would be nice it's not enough to convince me to upgrade.

Complete speculation.
