Look, people, if you want a matte iPhone, it's not that hard. Just get some masking tape and a sand blaster or some spray-on non-slip texture stuff or whatever.

Apple store Yesterday!!!

Yesterday I went to the Apple Mothership Store in Cupertino tu buy a dock for my 3G, and some other stuff... And a the time to pay I ask the guy behind the desk... "Is the new iPhone 3G-S gonna be physically diferent than the iPhone 3G?" Question that was gonna make me decide to buy or not the dock for my iPhone 3G....

Hes answer was: """MMM well I'm not sure... I think it is the same..."""

WHAT!!! maybe that means something... like the one in the pictures is not the one they are goin to release on JUNE 19...

Nice sleuthing by MR.

Does anyone else feel that the glossy coating on the 3Gs is somewhat different to the 3G? It's hard to put my finger on it, but it's like the light reflects differently on the 3Gs.

From that picture, it does look a bit less like a cheapo piece of PVC than the 3G does, but it could also be a function of the particular lighting conditions...

That means he doens't know anything. He doesn't want to say "yes it fits for sure" and then afterwards you complain because it doesn't fit. He hasn't seen one in real, so he just can't be sure.

Apple didn't really mention anything about the dimensions this time I think. They just said it's the same case, right?

The apple store employees never know anything about product releases the day that they come out. They are only told exactly what the public is told. They don't get the products before they're released, and they don't know about upcoming unreleased products. The guy wasn't sure because he didn't know, not because he knew more than we do.

BTW, my friend works at an Apple retail store. That's how I know they don't get told anything special...

Same case, exact same size.

This case would have been much more appropriate for the 3G S.

a)it would have distinguished it from the 3G
b)it looks much nicer

I think the point was to NOT differentiate. The 3G and 3GS are different models in the same line, in much the way they have different variations of the 15" MacBook Pro.

I agree the photographs of the 3GS (here: http://news.weiphone.com/news/2009-06-10/iPhone_3G_Sshiwan_202160.shtml) show what appears to be a slightly different finish to the phone. The appearance is less glossy and in my opinion looks less cheap than the current iPhone 3G finish. This could just be to do with lighting in the room however...

As for the leaked images of the matte iPhone, I think many of us would have preferred this, but as mentioned above, you can easily give your phone the matte look with a sandblaster. Tape off the bezel and screen, camera lens, apple logo etc if desired and sandblast. It will give a very close look to the leaked picture...

Myself for one, was most disappointed about the bezel. Having had the first gen and 3G iphones I am aware the bezel scratches incredibly easy, whereas the rest of the phone is fairly easy to maintain. Covers on the market all seem to avoid the bezel, although it is the most vulnerable area on the phone. I was really hoping for a satin/ brushed steel finish, or in fact the leaked black bezel we had all seen. Anyone else feel the chrome bezel should have been changed?

Could be. We'll see in a few days :) .

First off, I would have preferred a Matte case.

1) Maybe the leaked Matte case IS the iPhone 3G-S case, just unfinished and without the shiny coating

2) Maybe apple leaked a Matte case to gauge consumer opinion and reaction, and ultimately chose to keep the glossy finish

we may never know, but it sure is fun to speculate

I think your correct. it's the black, but not a finished, "finish."
Needs the clear coat.

maybe next time?

I think or at least IMO Apple isn't done with 3G S. Although it has been released I have the impression they will revamp the 3G S in 6 months, maybe in February. However I think that they are aware of peoples negativity to the current housing and should be trying to do something to appease them.

The common iPhone user doesn't care about the case. The only people that care are those here who were looking at the leaked pictures. Got it? Apples target doesn't care... at all. My sister ordered the 3G S (typical customer) and she was thrilled about the look, and that it was $200 for the white one. MK?

If the common iPhone user doesn't care, then why are people saying all over the net that they wish the leak was legit? Because they don't like it. Which means they don't like the appearance, which means they care. Maybe not the people who don't read rumors don't care about the looks, but those who do read the rumors read them for one reason or another. I might be new to the forum, but I'm not stupid. I don't care to know about your sister and her thrill level with her new phone. All I was saying is that the reason why Apple possibly didn't update the look might have to do with the fact that the 3G is becoming extremely successful which is why they make a deal of it in their new Ad that it looks the same. Because it is selling. But the glossy back has its downfalls and a lot of people had their hopes up on the new back. Also the lack of an update is a marketing scheme because when a newer model comes out, regardless people are going to eat it up. Also it because of the success, it is too early to redesign.

I'm pretty sure we are a very small % of iphone owners. in fact, i'd say apple fanbois/gurls are a minority now. people buy the iphone like its a fashion accessory, and those people probably had no idea of the leaked matt image, or the black/dark bezel.

basically i agree with uberamd. i'd say the average user cares that the iphone looks good, but does not care enough about the phone to chase rumors on the internet and so has no idea that a matt finish was ever a possibility (if indeed it was, since, as one person has stated in a previous thread, with the right lighting the gloss back can be made to not look glossy when photographed. or that it simply hadn't had the gloss coating applied that it was always going to receive).

We are the minority. See my signature, or the person I quoted below. The people here do not in any way, shape, or form represent any majority of Apple's customer base. The average, majority customer would never join a rumor forum, so what we want is not what others want, most others want what they get.

I realize you don't care that my sister is excited for the 3G S. And you don't care because it pokes a hole in your argument that people care about the case. The average customer, my sister for example, doesn't care. And I used that example to make a point but obviously you completely missed that... I didn't get that at all from the post of yours I quoted. You said you think they are aware of the negativity in your previous post, yet still eat the phone up because its new. If thats the case, why bother manufacturing another case, where the only difference is texture? Your average customer would prefer shiny over matte, why do you think so many people think their shiny, glossy screens are the greatest things in the world? Again, what we at MacRumors want, or on the intertubes in general, doesn't really matter. When you learn marketing, it will all make sense.

And Apple doesn't need to appease us at all. They don't care that we wanted matte. Most people who bitch here will STILL buy the phone, so they could give a rats what we complain about, we still buy the products and Apple is still posting record profits. And maybe they will release a matte case down the road, but it has nothing to do with the people here, or on any other rumor site.

Exactly. The average customer sees commercials, their friends with the phone, spots it on a tv show they watch, then buys it. They have no clue about the matte rumor, the front facing camera rumor or patents that were released, the removal of the chrome bezel, etc. Heck, go ask any person you see on the street with an iPhone if they are disappointed the rumored features were not included in the 3G S, they will probably just stare blankly at you.

Don't worry guys, an insider source tells me that Apple will soon be unveiling a new "unibody" iPhone carved from a solid block of obsidian (black volcanic glass) harvested from the heart of an inactive volcano.

The unibody iPhone will be marketed as the "iPhone RAZR", with the tagline "Hot as magma, cool as Fonzi". It will retail for $1.00 (along with a 3-year contract with Cricket for only $108.00 a month).

HAHA

Long time Apple fans will know that Apple used to revamp designs like crazy. Between 1998 and 2007 (roughly) there was a huge number of redesigns and at least four distinctive "eras" (the semi-translucent plastic in all colors of the rainbow era, the clear plastic era, the white era and the metal era). The iMac evolved from a rainbow colored blob to a lampshade to a white slab to an aluminium slab, and the last three of those happened with 2 year intervals (2002, 2004, 2006). They have *never* held on to designs as long as they have with the cheese grater PowerMac/Mac Pro... it's, what, 6 years old now? The Mac Mini is several years old too, and so is the Mighty Mouse. Not to mention the borderline antique ACD 30".

I remember the brilliant colors of the iMacs...they still look cool today, but much more so back then when all PCs were beige. :)

Personally, I like the "cheese grater", it looks minimalist enough to be recognized as being made by Apple, but doesn't need to be any flashier as it's a workstation that probably sits on the floor hidden under a desk in most cases. If they change anything, I hope they make it black, but anodized black aluminum or some other *metal*, *not* the horrendous chunky black plastic that Dell is famous for.

As for the 30" ACD...WTF Apple!!! Seriously, where the hell is my 30" LED-backlit ACD??? (I'll *never* be able to afford one but I still want them to be updated so I can have something to drool on in the Apple store.) :D The 30" ACD is the new Mac mini...:(

Look, people, if you want a matte iPhone, it's not that hard. Just get some masking tape and a sand blaster or some spray-on non-slip texture stuff or whatever.

Hahhaahhaahhha, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do that to my phone.

I wish they would have gone this route.. this is one of the main reasons I will not be upgrading to a 3G S, it looks EXACTLY the same as what I have now.. and I never used a video camera when I had it so the 3G S is a flop to me, although twice the processor speed would be nice it's not enough to convince me to upgrade.

I like it too, but it will come in iPhone 4G

Agreed.... and I'll be updating first day for no extra charge, unlike 3G S owners.
Ah but then 3GS owners will be upgrading on the first day to the iPhone5UltraWhizzBang at no extra cost unlike iPhone 4 owners..

you can see where this is going :p

The only way to SCIENTIFICALLY solve this dilemma is to have all the major news sources (and some gossip tabloids) ask the question: Do you prefer Matte or Glossy?

And then we can watch as Apple designs some thing that is matte at one viewing angle, and glossy at another. That way, everybody wins!
