I’m so excited by the picture of logic boards I’m just giddy with excitement  I’m keeping my XS simply because I don’t care about the camera that much, which is used to take pictures of my cat mostly. I’m more interested in 5G and Qualcomm modems and even then the second generation of that phone not the first, as I remember the days of 3G and 4G and massive battery drain on the first versions of those phones, even iPhones saying turning on 4G or 3G could decrease battery life years back.

I’m no longer excited by iPhone releases, I think the square on the back looks hideous, if they added an extra lens in the vertical orientation it would’ve looked much better, but then again what do I know about cameras, obviously nothing. Still I know that it’s not worth £1150 more then I paid last year. In fact it wasn’t worth that much upgrading from the 7 either there really wasn’t that wow to notice in updating from the 7 to the Xs, yes it was a bit faster. I’m not particularly impressed with OLED on these phones it’s not like the panels on a TV which don’t suffer from colour shift. To be honest it’s just a phone that costs way to much as I see it and it will last until I need to replace it for whatever reason that may be. I am not into upgrading every year any more, or even every two years. I just can’t see the point with these incremental updates that I don’t really notice anymore for my own personal needs.

Man, that's a high density board. I tip my hat big time to whoever managed to escape-route BGA parts that compact. Anybody know how many layers are in that board?
16 is my educated guess. That is a "buried via" hell. The top layer is just for placing the ICs.

I think that the X really fulfills all needs and wants I have. Better camera is tempting, but not enough to make me pay $x,xxx.

Remember that amount is discounted by as much as $525 by trading a X. But even so, I hear you. The difference is still steep for a camera upgrade.

Again with the camera. Do people buy iPhones just for the camera?
Yes, that is my main reason for upgrading every year (not the only reason). But every time I look back at old pictures and videos, I always think, too bad this wasn't taken with the camera I currently have, so I upgrade every year, and can say "Well...I had the best they could offer at the time"

iPhone XS Max: 3.735 GB of DRAM

iPhone XS: 3.754 GB of DRAM

iPhone XR: 2.813 GB of DRAM

iPhone X: 2.823 GB of DRAM

iPhone 8+: 2.989 GB of DRAM

iPhone 7+: 3.000 GB of DRAM

The 2nd-Gen XR will likely be a "pseudo" 4 GB DRAM device, just like the XS & XS Max.

Apple corrected the RAM issue in the X when they Released the XS.

Apple will very-likely correct the RAM issue in the XR when they Release the 2nd-Gen XR.

The iPhone X & XR act like ~1.8 GB DRAM devices, when compared to the 7+, which acts like a "true" 3 GB device !

If Cook & Schiller had ANY Software Dev experience, they would NOT have made those mistakes.

Also, if there was even a single EE or Software Dev on the Apple Board, Apple as a company would NOT have made those mistakes !

Lack of RAM in the X & XR are HUGE Blunders, IMO !

Apple is widely expected to introduce three new iPhones in September, and ahead of time, photos of an alleged logic board for at least one of the upcoming devices have surfaced on Slashleaks.

2019-iphone-logic-board-alleged-photo.jpg

The logic board has a rectangular design, so we assume it belongs to the 2019 successor to the iPhone XR, as the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max have L-shaped logic boards. The board appears to have been manufactured in early March based on its "1019" date code, which corresponds to the 10th week of 2019.

Only one side of the logic board is printed. While the layout of the chips and circuitry looks quite different from the current iPhone XR logic board, we cannot gather any specific changes from the photos.

The next iPhone XR is expected to feature a dual-lens rear camera system, new green and lavender colors, and 4GB of RAM. The device is also expected to feature up to a six percent larger battery to accomodate a two-way wireless charging feature rumored to be coming to all three 2019 iPhones.

How about a leak showing a more powerful, longer lasting battery?

Wow Apple was really serious when they said that they will double down on any future iPhone leaks. It's only until now that we get to see a the logic board and heck we don't even know if the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max will be getting a new color knowing that Apple will be sending out the media invites for the iPhone keynote event next month. NEXT MONTH!!!! Lol

No, but they might upgrade (earlier) just for the camera.

You might also know nothing about the internals of phones in general, if I were to follow your line of reasoning. In that the placement of the three cameras is hardly only about the cameras. Not least since cameras are the thickest component in any smartphone (hence the bump) and thus you cannot place much if anything behind them (except the display of course on 'fullscreen' phones). Note that on pre-iPhone X phones the camera was behind the top bezel which made it possible for it to use the full depth of the phone.

Hindsight is always 20/20

It easy to say that now, knowing what software they have developed the past 2 years. They clearly caught themselves. For me their biggest miss with the X was the neural core, which is significantly larger on the XS.

Again, they make these hardware decisions atleast a year in advance of when the software that is going to run on them is released or even announced in some cases.

ELI5 How comes only the 7+ is exactly 3GB DRAM and the rest aren’t exactly 3GB or 4GB DRAM? And why do the X and XR act like 1.8GB DRAM devices. Genuinely curious.

I don’t really care tbh It’s a phone it means nothing to me internally, but vertical camera placement looks great on the Huawei P30 pro if you look. https://www.dxomark.com/huawei-p30-pro-camera-review/

One of the main reasons I upgrade yearly is for the latest camera. So - Yes!

I have kids and I value getting the best photo's very much. Same for travel photo's and any photo's. I always mention this to my sisters and other people who have grandkids etc, but are using ancient iPhone's. Why cheap out? Get the latest I tell them.

The one thing that is really valuable that you can't ever get back is family photo's and other photo's of cool stuff.

Dude, using an iPhone - any iPhone - to take family pictures is "cheaping out". Any real camera will do better. Even my ancient Olympus E-M1 will put any smartphone to shame when I pair it with a good lens like the Panaleica Nocticron, so that's what I'll use to take pictures of my kid.

Craig Federighi was the Chief Architect of Enterprise Object Frameworks at NeXT and deeply versed in the frameworks top to bottom long before he became SVP. As his former colleague he’d smile and enthusiastically educate you on how wrong your assessment of their skill sets are across the board. This is a company deep in the Engineering with a vast pool of PhDs advancing everything forward.

I’ll be blunt, Steve was never instrumental nor skilled in even the basics of OOA/OOD but managed to build the most talent in the industry to drive it forward. That spirit is more capable today than it was when he was alive.

We’re at another point in technology where new areas of expansion are yet to be fully realized. The iPad/iPhone/Watch/Headphones aren’t new ideas. What we do with them and how powerful they’ve become has converged a lot of ideas into these scaled down platforms only dreamed about in the past.

Silicon is phasing out. Until we move beyond it we won’t see the next generations of computing really hit its stride. It’ll all be small refinements on older ideas.

So, assuming that Apple didn't actually think the square bumps looks better and thus has chosen it because it helps with the functionality (eg, via a slightly larger battery), you would support the principle of form over function in this regard? Basically if Jony Ive had insisted on a vertical layout, Apple should have acquiesced?

Huh? Where have you been?

We typically see logic board leaks in July and August. The iPhone X logic board was leaked in late August 2017.

We already know the colors for iPhone 11 will remain the same but with frosted glass.

The 11R will get green and lavender colors.
