I don't get it.

What makes this so cheap? Because the front and back covers are plastic? That's retarded.

I don't believe this at all. Apple moved away from plastic because of all the complaints and the lawsuit from the iPod Nano scratching in 2006.

So I guess now both rich and poor alike can say.. "oh lookie! I can control it with my finger!" and then make a goofy laugh of amusement.

The poor shouldn't really spend on phone, mostly for monthly cost of having one.

But then again, they do and credit companies are making a killing on the back of those with poor math skills... Kind of a financial natural selection...

Good point :)

Apple, as a money making company would be very stupid not to look at the cheaper end of the smart phone market. It is a huge untapped (By Apple) cash cow that introduces people to the Apple world, first a phone then an Air and so on.

I want an ultra feature-heavy, high-end iPhone. Perhaps somewhere in the $1,200-$1,500 price range. :D

It would have to be some other major change than just glass. Switching a .20 sheet of plastic for a .50 sheet of glass doesn't lower prices $100 or even $50. #mathskillz

But if Apple did use plastic for glass it would not nec. be a downgrade in quality. There are grades of plastic just like every other material. The polycarb in Maui Jim sunglasses or the plastic used in BMW, Merc, Lexus, etc dashboard are examples of "high end" plastic.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

I don't know if this is the lower cost iPhone, but there's no question that one is coming. They really need to hit the midrange market, and they acknowledged that in the last earnings call.

This is probably just a prototype for testing (i.e. the internals may vary). That's unlikely to be the final case.

It's very hard to imagine Apple wanting to cheapen their brand by including a low-cost model that differed in its use of cheaper materials.

If Apple ships low cost versions of every product they make it will most likely hurt Apple as an exclusive and cool brand, it may also change peoples perception on how good the quality is on all their products. Basic marketing and human psychology.

I don't know what direction Apple wants to take Apple in, but if they want to be a brand for everyone there may come a time where another underdog comes along and gets the cool stamp.

i doubt millions of iphone 4 user, care if it is slightly cheaper, since most bought through contract, and i am sure all want quality rather than slightly cheaper plastic phone. Is this true, i will be disappointed.

Hahaha, when I first looked at the post, I read "cheap iPhones" and saw a jailbroken white iPhone 4. Just for a moment, I thought Apple will be shipping their 'low-cost' iPhone with Cydia installed :)

Anyways, back on topic, shouldn't the prototype machine be running some sort of a software, like the ones we've seen previously?

That's exactly why Rolls Royce & Bentley are looking at the compact car market :D

Probably bogus, but exciting to see Virgin Mobile up in the status bar. I'm using an Optimus V right now (which I love), but I'd probably jump to a prepaid iPhone, as long as they offer the same plan for it. Right now I paid $150 for a great android phone, and pay $40 a month for 1200 minutes and unlimited text and data. No-one can beat that, and in my area the service is excellent.

yeah idk know they could def go this route but i doubt that is an actual prototype that they describe. Is it me or in the second picture they added the antenna markings?

All these rumors and yet, this will be the iPhone line-up come refresh :

- iPhone 4 8GB white/black
- iPhone 5 16 GB white/black
- iPhone 5 32 GB white/black

Unless they surprise and bump storage this year, then it will be 16/32/64.
