Great a jailbroken black (converted to white)iPhone 4 adding a source to Cydia. Thrilled.

Yeap, this was my first thought as this is exactly how mine is setup with a white iPhone 4 screen that was out before the official white iPhone launched. It has the same exact sensor holes(which don't work so hot). Also, the white color itself isn't as brilliant as the white Apple released..at least compared to iPad 2.

It would have to be some other major change than just glass. Switching a .20 sheet of plastic for a .50 sheet of glass doesn't lower prices $100 or even $50. #mathskillz

But if Apple did use plastic for glass it would not nec. be a downgrade in quality. There are grades of plastic just like every other material. The polycarb in Maui Jim sunglasses or the plastic used in BMW, Merc, Lexus, etc dashboard are examples of "high end" plastic.

Exactly. The new model will be perceived as cheaper and Apple can both "justify" its lower price and also the higher price of the premium model. A wider market, high margins, not that much of a cost to Apple. Seems smart to me.

It makes sense, different devices for different goals (or at least different materials).

Sometimes we forget that apple is a corporation, as such, its goal is to expand its market.

We all very well aware that today, a product with an apple symbol, its a sign of status ( a few years ago, in the times of the first ipods, a friend of mine offered me to buy my apple stickers, he told me, "I can't afford an Ipod now, but I can make people believe that I have one"), and many people will pay to get this ephemeral notion of class... if they could... well, apparently soon they will.

The risk is.. trying to get everywhere, is a good way to get nowhere, if this project is true, apple should be careful.

Apple, as a money making company would be very stupid not to look at the cheaper end of the smart phone market. It is a huge untapped (By Apple) cash cow that introduces people to the Apple world, first a phone then an Air and so on.

The $50 iPhone 3GS says "hi". (It's also free if you wanted a refurb...)

Perhaps it would be more appealing in an iPhone chassis.

I think the appeal of Vertu phones is the fact they don't have an iPhone chassis. Who wants to buy a 9k$ iPhone. The people who buy Vertu phones want a concierge button and a dial-pad to make calls.

I would love to see an unlocked iPhone 4 around $300.00

Forget it. The unlocked 3GS is sold for 549$.

$299 is the "Magical" price point. It kills 2 birds in one stone. iPod Touch, and more importantly Android. :D

I can't believe this. How dumb of MacRumors.

That's obviously just a white iPhone 4. Plus it's jailbroken, running Cydia. So either your picture is a load of crap, or Apple is jumping fence.

I find it more likely that that particular iPhone was part of the testing phase of the white iPhone 4's and a employee stole/kept it for them self, then jailbroke it. Nothing special here.

apple has learned that plastic is not a practical material for high handling products(laptops, iphones, ipads ect) the old plastic macbooks had many case issues and even when they brought out the unibody it was again quickly scrapped. apple has realized that aluminum and glass is the way to go and why almost all of there product line is made of just that. this is getting old if you cannot afford apple then go with andriod or find a used cheep 3g/s.

If Apple ships low cost versions of every product they make it will most likely hurt Apple as an exclusive and cool brand, it may also change peoples perception on how good the quality is on all their products. Basic marketing and human psychology.

I don't know what direction Apple wants to take Apple in, but if they want to be a brand for everyone there may come a time where another underdog comes along and gets the cool stamp.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Apple to me is the high end electronics brand, my friends get android/Blackberries because they can't affor iphones. If Apple releases a cheaper model, it would tarnish the name a little (even though they would take a big chunk out of sales)

I guess I'm happy Apple will be doing this, but sad because Apple will lose it's name in a sense

Looks Fake

If you look closely at the image showing the front of the iPhone you can see a circle around the home button which appears to be a matte finish screen protector. Don't think it's a plastic iPhone 4, I could be wrong but don't believe it's a legit picture.

I'm not buying it. When the iPhone 5 will sell millions anyway why even bother with a cheaper alternate?

I have a Vertu and don't use as i want more than a concierge button, and a dial pad. Hence the iphone

Now if they worked with apple to make an Ivertu i'd be very interested!:D

Ok, this IS fake.

However, is there not room in the Apple ecosystem for a cheaper iPhone? I think it'd be useful for two reasons:

1) Direct competition with Android handsets
2) It would be a sure-fire seller. The iPhone IS a status symbol and people do love them. Surely widening the market wouldn't hurt Apple? The number of stick-up-their-own-butt people who left the iPhones because there was a cheaper version would be minimal.

Some thoughts-

What if Apple does away with the iPod touch in favor of an iPhone with a data option similar to an iPad? You buy the iPhone, then can buy service a month at a time from AT&T or Verizon, directly from the iPhone.

The iPod Nano with touchscreen replaces the iPod Shuffle, or maybe the iPod nano goes away? Either way I think the iPod touch will go the way of the dodo.

Perhaps it is a reason like this that Apple eliminated the free iPod for back to school (in addition to the fact that they're trying to draw people to the Mac App Store). Usually Apple uses the back to school event to unload some of the year old iPods, but this year there won't really be any replacements in the traditional sense, so Apple would rather hold onto their current stock of iPods so people can purchase them once they see that Apple is simplifying the iPod line.

No matter what happens, I can definitely see Apple simplifying their iPod product line, and in such a way that would lead Tim Cook(?) to tell analysts in their earnings report that they are expecting less than usually September revenue this year.

That's on contract. The bulk of the developing market is prepaid and thus unsubsidized. They'll tackle it, but with a $349 phone. Not cheap enough to cheapen the brand, but affordable for an upwardly-aspiring citizen of the developing world.

We've known that Apple has made it clear that they are going to address the cheaper segment for a while now, which means an inevitable cheaper iPhone.

http://blogs.forbes.com/ericsavitz/2011/02/28/apple-plots-move-to-expand-iphones-market-share/

Cook referred to the iPhone as “the mother of all halos,” noting that the iPhone has expanded Apple’s sales of other products, particularly in emerging markets.

The analyst says Cook “appeared to reaffirm the notion that Apple is likely to develop lower priced offerings” to expand the market for the iPhone.

Cook said the company is planning “clever things” to address the prepaid market, and that Apple did not want its products to be “just for the rich,” and that the company is “not ceding any market.”
