Too lazy to read the article but new leather cases? Silicon catches too much crap in my pockets.

The new silicone cases (for iPhone 12 series) are different. Much nicer to the touch and not attracting lint like that anymore.
I’ve had multiple silicone cases for every iPhone since they have been available (think it was the iPhone 6). The iPhone 12 cases are just as bad in my opinion. In fact, I think the squared edges make it worse!

Well, I can‘t argue with your own personal experience, but a) it‘s a fact that the material is noticeably different and b) most folks posting here and elsewhere (including me) had a different experience.

I’ve got 4 different cases for 4 different phones in front of me here. They all feel the same to me. My phone lives in my front pocket and I find that the cases go really shiny after a few months of use on the corners. Seems to make them stickier too!

Still, they are the only case I use. Despite the flaws I still find they offer the best protection.

I d

I don’t pay for Apple watch bands but I do pay for Apple leather cases. They are noticeably better than knock-offs.

Though I was able to find leftover blue cases for my 8+ for $20 each. So I bought 3, which combined should last as long as my phone.
That’s great. I really like the look of the leather cases. I bought one a few years ago and really wanted to like it but it just felt too slick in my hand. Maybe I should have given it a chance. 😀

I used to think the same thing, but I now I don't think this is correct.

Try an Apple case - go to an Apple store if you can, they let you try on any case. Compare it to a $19 case from Amazon. The Apple case is noticeably better, it fits better, it feels better. It's thinner where it needs to be and thicker where it needs to be.

Look at other cases on the market. Note all the "good" cases cost $40 or more. Mujo, Nomad, Woolnut, etc. The high-end stuff just costs that much.

Not saying it's necessary. 50% of the time my phone is naked. And in terms of drop protection, a $10 case is as good as a $50 case. But in terms of fit, finish, and aesthetic, the Apple cases are priced about right.
I’m sure they are nice. Lots of cases are way overpriced. Think Otterbox. I’ve been using clear TPU cases for the last several years. Different brands. Spigen, off brand etc. typically less than $10 on Amazon. I like the clear so the phone shows through. Grip is decent and protection is sufficient for me. I’ve had an iPhone since the 4s and have yet to damage one (knock on simulated wood grained veneer). My wife likes Caseology cases. Also no damage in many years. To each their own for sure 👍

In terms of damage protection, I think even a poor-fitting ugly $2 whatever cheapo case from aliexpress will do the job.

You pay more for any additional value the case adds. Take TPU cases for example. The cheapo ones will yellow in a month or two, but at $5 a pop it's whatever, you can get a new case every other month and still spend less in a year than buying one high-quality non-yellowing TPU case (and pollute the earth with throw-away plastic cases).

Also, perhaps I'm being pedantic, but if something is for sale and people are buying, then it is per se not overpriced. Overpriced things sit there without being sold. If it's being sold, then it's not overpriced. Whether it's marketing, quality control, or materials - something is driving that price higher, and if it has found it's audience and that audience is buying, that means it is priced correctly.

Love that purple, but with possibly only 6 months till the next iPhone which looks like having different dimensions, it's a tricky call - though saying that I might skip the next generation unless there's anything really compelling over my 12 Pro

There’s a whole industry for iPhone cases that offer as good or better protection than the Apple branded cases. You can also get ones that look aesthetically better and cost significantly less too if you look about.

Of course the term ‘over priced’ is very subjective but many things are just that but popular because they carry a powerful and popular brand. Apple are in a very lucky position in this respect, especially with accessories. Look at Supreme as a brand. You can pay £90 for a T-shirt that is hideously overpriced but is also popular due to its brand.

Sure, but when you buy a Supreme shirt, you're buying just a shirt. You're buying a certain signal, you're buying into a culture, you're buying (sadly) a brand identity. If it was just a shirt, people would just buy a plain white tee instead. But they're paying extra for that logo and all the soft benefits that come with it. And those soft benefits didn't come free - Supreme had to spend a lot of money to develop that brand identify, that culture, that association.
