Smartphone with 5.4’-5.5’ all screen display is not small at all and some people are simply trying to downplay the demand for that segment of the market.

Undoubtedly, there will be more Android OEM begin to sell more 5.4’-5.5’ all-screen notch-less display smartphone as the demand for that segment continues to increase.

Why would Apple competitors build an iPhone mini competitor that only generates 6% of Apple’s sales?
We’re not getting the whole story from Apple. They blew it when they set the price way above the previous SE 2 price of $399. o_O
If Apple priced the phone cheaper it’d be missing a bunch of existing features, at which point we’d be wondering what the point is when the SE 2 is already around.

Did anyone notice Apple is the only smartphone brand that doesn't sell a notch-less all-screen smartphone model.

Samsung, Sony, OnePlus, VIVO and OPPO started to produce and sell a notch-less all-screen smartphone in 2019.

The only reason I haven’t bought the 12 mini yet is I want to actually hold it in my hands first. With covid and my local Apple store being closed to browsers it hinders my ability to hold the device and be confident it’s what I’m looking for. I think I’m not entirely alone in that which may be a small (or not) part of why the 12 mini hasn’t sold as well as people expected.

I’m just not someone who wants to spend a lot of time playing games or watching video on small (yes, I consider even the 10.5” iPad smallish) screens.
I don’t know what phone you have now but I’ll offer this anecdotal information. Through my job I get a new phone every year so I had an XR and an 11. I got the 12 this year and was very surprised at how much smaller it looked / felt than my two previous phones. On paper, the difference is not that great but in hand, the 12 feels way smaller and lighter. I always hand my phones down to family when I get a new one and when I pick up one of the other phones in the house (XR or 11) I’m always shocked at how much larger and heavier they feel even though the screens are the same size. If you need a new phone, I would encourage trying a 12 if you have an XR or 11 and think you want something smaller. Of course, if you have something like an 8, then the 12 may feel big. I considered the Mini this year but have grown accustomed to the larger screen so decided to go with the 12. Very glad I did. They hit the nail this year with form factor for me. Perfect.

People seem to forget that even a modestly-selling iPhone is still moving millions of units. Even if the small phone market is a "niche" it's a niche worth a huge amount of money.

I just love when a new Android phone enters the market it's automatically touted as an 'iPhone Rival" or an "iPhone Killer" as if it doesn't compete with other Android-based phones. Also these "killers" and "rivals" never end up hurting Apple's sales. I don't care what features these so-called rivals have I don't want an Android anything!

Are you saying there's no Best Buy or other Apple-authorized retailer near you to check out their phones? You mean the Apple store is the only option?

I really don't like the notch, but aren't all these others not quite notch-less all-screen? There is always a punch-hole and/or a mini-notch, bezel, chin, whatever. This mini-Sony is also hiding an ugly chin beneath its dark wallpaper, and there is a little notch on top.

Plus I’m guessing those phones lack all of the sensors in the iPhone’s notch.

The lack of a good small Android device is why I moved to an iPhone Mini. If this Sony has a camera as good as the 1 MK2 then I may find myself moving back to Android. Sony has amazing phones they just do little to no US marketing for some reason.

If you're in a location where Apple Stores are closed due to lockdown there's a good chance other electronic retailers are closed too. Personally, even if there are stores that are open, this is not a time when I would choose to visit them and handle display models.

Have they? My experience of having to support some Xperias a few years back was they were terrible for providing new android patches in a timely fashion and almost never provided full version upgrades. Same with Sony laptops in the old days, customise the gpus so they cant use standard drivers, churn them out and forget about them. Sorry to vent a bit there but I cannot stand Sony at all and can never fathom why people rate them so highly!
Fair points.

Hopefully Apple doesn’t nix the mini completely but keeps some a small corner of manufacturing active for the next few years and offer it as a niche option like the SE 1.

Good, Sony offering iPhone 12 mini equivamrnt for Android users. Let world know about your gadgets. On contarary, Samsung is mere tech less than more marketing noise..

No doubt this world goes around in circles.
It all started with a big phone and a quest to make it very small, then the biggest phone, and now back to small....

Big screen phones will be around for as long as social media is around. Also, big screen phones defines a person status. It's used as a talking point, it's designed to send a statement to others saying 'look what I've got'. A person pulls out a big screen phone from their pocket and generaly others are curious and interested in what they've got. You pull out a phone that is small enough to hide in the palm of your hand, nobody is interested.

Everything you said makes absolutely zero sense. I live in the town where Apple's stores first opened along with being close to their flagship store and when these stores closed down due to the pandemic Best Buy was still open so that makes no sense that if Apple is closed all the other electronics retailers would be closed.
Also what difference does it make if you handle the phones in Apple's stores vs. Best Buy's stores? That's what they make hand sanitizer for. Apple's phones aren't any more safe to handle than the ones in Best Buy.

That's cause the mini is barely featured in Apple' marketing globally on web and print. THAT is the issue.

Nobody knows what they don't know/see and if Apple just shows a picture against the 12 and not what the mini is capable of .... there you have the results. THAT is why all the tubers have had specific videos featuring the 12 mini and trying it for a full month many have switched to it as main device - to help Apple's sales and failure in marketing the 12 mini
One thing to keep in mind it may be a good chance that the 12 mini is a loss leader for Apple and if someone wants something small they have to either ask for it and search on the website for it. A loss leader is not going to make the company's front page advertisement of exciting products.

I don't know if it would work for you, but the shipping with Apple and Returns are REALLY easy. Perhaps try to order online for ship, and then box it up and return if it doesn't work for you?
I considered that but I’d also prefer not to have the hassle. Especially since I’d give my wife my old 11 Pro and trade in her XS.
