loosing all credibility with posts like this , you’re `source’ predicted iphone 17e would retain a notch , and this gives him credibility, poor journalism imo

There's a lot here warranting extreme skepticism:

Now, the leaker has provided further detail. For example, the iPhone 18's display specifications will be downgraded, resulting in inferior screen quality. The manufacturing process itself is said to be "taking a step backward."
Zero chance that Apple reduces the specs of the 18 display as compared to the 17. AFAIK Apple has never done something like that on any product in the modern era (i.e. post-Jobs II). The specs might be—in fact likely will be—the same as the 17, but not worse.

As a result, a reduction from five to four GPU cores in the iPhone 18 could be among the planned downgrades. Fixed Focus Digital added that it is "highly probable" that Apple will tweak the name of the device's A-series chip in an effort to disguise the extent of downgrade.
...what? Apple uses binned A- and M-series chips all the time and has never found it necessary to change the name of the chip. Nor do I think one less CPU core even approaches a significant enough "downgrade" to necessitate such a "disguise."

The move will "effectively bring it in line with the '18e' model."
Again, what? The rumor is that Apple will "downgrade" the 18 but not "downgrade" the (presumably) forthcoming 18e, such that the product lines will effectively merge?

None of this makes any sense.

I agree with you.

I'll say what I said in the last thread on this. I strongly suspect:

iPhone Air gains another camera and speaker; becomes the "default" iPhone in the fall, but keeps the Air name.
iPhone 18 is really just the 18e, but called the 18. Comes out in the spring.

This allows apple to raise the price of the "default" phone (without "technically" raising prices), allows the more attractive, better in hand model to be the "default" option, and makes all these rumors about the 18 getting "worse" make sense.

In the interest of cost savings, I think Apple should make a smaller phone again.

I'm just looking out for their bottom line here!

First of all, what is the definition of “downgrade” here?
Sometimes, certain manufacturing processes can be complicated. So in order to reduce cost and complexity, the processes can be streamlined to be more efficient and cost effective. That doesn’t necessarily mean the feature implementation of the process will be “inferior.” This is always done in chip, display, battery, chassis, etc manufacturing.
The report may be based on the wrong premise that a “downgrade” in manufacturing process equates to feature inferiority.

Spot-on analysis. Also... it's just a *rumor*.

Chum in the water.

Doesn't the Neo 2 need the binned four core GPUs?

Rather than increase the price of the iPhone 18, the company plans to downgrade certain components, including the chip, to maintain the same price point.
nah it is much simplier than that, iphone 17 was first really nice budget device and people were buying it instead of much more expensive pro and max version. They cripple 8 to make people buy pro and max instead.

Apple Introduces iPhone 18: The Most Efficient iPhone Ever, Now With Less of Everything

Cupertino, California — Apple today announced iPhone 18, a bold reimagining of what a smartphone can be when it courageously does… less. In a world obsessed with excess, iPhone 18 delivers Apple’s most magically efficient experience yet by thoughtfully removing features customers didn’t know they could live without.

“At Apple, we’ve always believed simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” said an Apple spokesperson in a retro black turtle neck. “With iPhone 18, we asked ourselves: what if we took everything people love about iPhone—and made it dramatically more efficient by scaling it back?”

iPhone 18, the best efficient iPhone we've ever made. You are going to love it.

Did things just take a Turnus for the worst?

I had to go there. Sorry. I know Timmy is still in charge and all, but I had to be the first I suppose.

It's kinda clear what Apple is doing. By shifting the 18 rollout to early next year, lowering the specs on the 18, and bringing out the Pro units in the fall, they're trying to push people into the Pro models. Especially if they plan on buying a new phone as a gift for the holiday season.

Between the debut shift and this, it's clear Apple is pushing people in to the Pro phones. It doesn't matter to me, I always get a PM anyway.
