I doubt wireless chargers would be cheap enough to just buy 3 of.

How's 65 cents?

How do you wirelessly charge a phone when it's, say, in your car being used for navigation (something I do every day to get to work).

It will be interesting to see how wireless charging works in a car when you have a dashmount.

Many dash holders have wireless charging built in.

Idiotic idea at best. How is a smart connector going to work with a case & what about fast charging? Get a USB-C on the phone apple.

I just want them to get rid of the flipping awful camera shortcuts on the lock screen or at the very least the ability to lock it down. I am so tired of accidentally swiping open the camera, the lack of a bezel makes it worse.

Sigh. So instead of having to carry a single charging cable for all our mobile units, we would STILL have to run around with yet another proprietary charger cable for our small Apple things.

Hint: the universal charging "cable" is now Qi. It works on Android phones and it works for iPhones.

I've started seeing Qi charging pop up in places like train stations, airports, cafes, hotels, libraries, etc. I don't carry a cable at all. If I'm running low, I'll go grab a coffee and top up my phone for 10 mins.

Very strange that it's easier to connect my Android phone to my MacBook Pro than it would be for an iPhone, and the Android would recharge faster. Feature mismatches seem to be a trend in general with Apple these days. Other examples include how the iPhone has excellent cameras but their most expensive devices have 720p webcams, or that iPhones removed fingerprint scanners around when MacBooks added them. I have to wonder if the apparent incongruity between product lines is an indication of some bigger organizational problem.

Hmmm... interesting. I wonder if I smart connector would work for connecting to Carplay? That's the only thing I was really worried about when I heard about Apple potentially going totally wireless as I'm not planning to replace my 1 year old car anytime soon!

I think it's more likely that Apple realizes their customers have grown dependent on the Apple ecosystem - so Apple can now be abusive and gaslight their customers without fear of losing them. Most will go along with it, and the few that leave will be more than replaced by new converts.

Apple did once sincerely think of their customers - I had some great service from them over two decades. Now they are only interested in mining their customers wallets and keeping their status as a fashion brand.

wouldn’t 2021 model be 12s? Since the leaker means 13 series being portless, do we have two more years of lightning?

Nah there's no way. I'm about as die hard of an Apple fan boy as they come, so much so I'm known for it among my family and friends and they give me crap for it whenever possible, but even I will be leaving my beloved walled garden if this does in fact come to fruition. That is just absolutely ridiculous Apple come on ffs...

Pretty Ironic. For the first time in my cell phone life. I was going to buy an Iphone. I purchased the Ipad pro because I liked the developments of IOS finally catching up with Android in terms of file systems and versatility. I've actually loved my Ipad. I was pretty frustrated with the Samsung S20 series and I thought ok, now is the time to make the switch. . .but they stick with the lightning port!!!!! So, I have to carry two cables for my Ipad Pro and my Iphone???? Who is making the decisions at apple? Oh well, I'll look at Google or Motorola to see what they ahve.

No point in adopting USB C on the iPhone. They should just wait until it’s port less. However they should have done this with the iPad too.
The fact that they moved to USB c is why I bought my Ipad Pro. It makes it so much more useful with other devices.

There needs to be a way to charge Apple devices in a vehicle. I fly an airplane and have my iPad mini mounted on the yoke. I need it to be able to last a full 10 hour day of flying and currently have it plugged into a cigarette lighter USB adapter for power. How will wireless charging work? I can't mount it anywhere else int he airplane.

I just wanted to post for most of you Apple users. I'm a long time Samsung user so we have had wireless charging for a while. You can buy wireless windshield mount fast chargers for years. They have become cheaper. Since your phone does clip into it you could use the cradle of one of theses with a large Anker fast charging capable power bank. I think the entire design of portless sounds like just another way for Apple to get you to buy all new accessories for your iPhone personally like they do every few years and That's one of the reasons I don't care for iPhones. Though I am stuck with one iOS device that is a medical controller for a internal medical device that is inside my body. It's due to be upgraded next year and in afraid I'm going to get stuck with some form of theses devices. But this is all just rumors and might not really happen any time soon or ever. But someone might just make a phone case with coils built in that will be very bulky and costly and require a large expensive power bank to push on the go if you want to plug it in.

People will see this and say, oh boy Apple screwed up now they will lose business over this. Nope, Apple can literally do anything no matter how horrible and real Apple people will act like no charging port is actually a good thing. They should really start using half size batteries and cut the RAM in half as well and say it's actually better that way. They would sell just as many phones and increase profits. Some people won't like hearing this but you know I'm right.

I actually put my Android phone with wireless charging capability on a wireless Apple charger and it wouldn't charge. You didn't think they would actually allow interoperability with an industry-standard did you? I'm pretty sure if they want a wireless charging device they're going to have to pay the Apple tax.

Do you really want to use dash holders in 2021? If you don’t have CarPlay maybe answer is yes. But if I have one I don’t need any holder. Also only new cars could have wireless charging mat in it

Are these Anker products or the 3.99 stuff on eBay?
We've tried everything. Anker, Amazon Basics, Apple originals. Maybe it's just us. I don't get it. Like my dad has a cable for his iPhone 5s that is the only one that works with it--even brand new ones wouldn't work, but it doesn't work with mine at all. He finally switched to a Pixel. He loved the 5s and even had the battery replaced to keep it going but was tired of having so many charging issues. My iPhone 7 has been a PITA because something I believe is wrong actually with the iPhone lightning connector in the phone. It had an issue where it wouldn't work for data unless I bought a brand new cord (didn't matter which brand) and it would work for a few weeks (literally just a few weeks) and after that would only work for charging and not data, but now it won't work for data with any cable at all across many different devices (Macs/PCs) even with a brand new cable. Even before that, for a long time and endless AppleCare calls that got nowhere, I couldn't get either the Apple Health or Photos off of the phone. For a while it would connect to Image Capture long enough I could get some of the photos off, but now it won't connect at all. And it's literally 100% full. I've offloaded all of the apps, and it's full. I think either a combination of the phone being completely full and/or the battery being depleted (even though it says running at full speed (I can't remember the phrase under battery health). Anyhow, I can't even download the google photos app now to get the photos off via wi-fi because there's not enough space to download it. So I just use it to make phone calls now and that's it.

I made a decision I would never buy a phone again that doesn't have removable storage. I didn't have a lot of money, so I bought a Samsung A50. The camera is absolutely atrocious on it. It is worse than the iPhone 5s I had. But I will say this: Being able to quickly upload all photos and videos to Google Photos and just keep a permanent copy of them in physical form by swapping out the microSD card is super useful. I know Apple would never add a microSD card slot. But that would be the perfect phone for me: an iPhone with removable storage. I don't want to get into a long thing, but I absolutely do not trust Apple with online storage. Was burned with iTools, dotMac, and MobileMe. I trust Google to actually keep stuff for the long haul. And I was fine offloading stuff with a cable to my Mac and the an external drive, but it was a nightmare couple of years working with Apple tech support because it just didn't work most of the time until it worked none of the time.

Believe me, I prefer the iPhone. Maybe I and my family have had weird luck. I don't know. In fact I really would like to have a working iPhone because I'd like to get an Apple Watch. Right now my iPhone 7, which isn't *that* old, is not up to the task of supporting an Apple Watch. Like I said, it's 100% full, can't get any data off of it, it's 256 gb model, so that's a lot, and with my OCD about saving things not willing to wipe it. And it's pretty much unusably slow. I have animations turned off and just opening the phone app it takes a long time and will sometimes not respond to button presses for a long time. It randomly restarts as well even though in Battery Health it says it's never turned off due to power issues (but you can actually watch the battery run down on it in real time).

Sorry for a long response.

that’s because it’s an analytical statement without evaluation.
I was replying to a posted that (somewhat apologetically) confused capitalistism with greedy behavior. While the latter has become a somewhat dominant feature of much capitalistic behavior, conflating the two as quasi synonyms simply implies that capitalism cannot and therefore must not change and get rid of greedy behavior.
Capitalism as a concept does not preclude responsible behavior towards the world.
Ooh, sorry, I misread your post, I thought you said “greed is good”, which is also a quote from someone else I think.

I bet in 2021 the others will follow, and get rid of the port as well....so in 5 years we will be in the portless smartphone world
i disagree as usb-c isn't just meant for charging its great for usb-c to hdmi such as samsung and samsung dex or how Ipad pro can work with any monitor usb-c to hdmi. Lightning port is still to limited and wireless is still not great for example airplay is still slow for video casting

Will they be providing Carplay over Bluetooth? Otherwise, the iPhone 12 will be my last until I trade in my wheels.

you just reminded me my stereo can only do carplay via wired. Damn I just barely got into apple now you are making me think if this goes through will they give full support bluetooth or will I have to by adapters just to make it work

Make up your mind lol

Option A) Car is new and has CarPlay. Car has Qi charging or can get a charging mat.

Option B) Car is old, doesn’t have CarPlay. Use iPhone on a dash holder with Qi.

Unless you can magically charge it actual WIRELESS like through the air in a certain distance and FAST, no thank you. For example how are you supposed to charge your phone in your backpack tossing around? Attach it to the charging pad with stickers?

well looks like this is the last year ill get a phone then because I need that port for my dac-dsp in my Audi. I don't know why apple would screw so many products by taking out the port all together. There are tons of wired headphones people still use and Audio programs that need the port because bluetooth isn't wonderful. Half or more of the cars out there that use wired CarPlay suddenly are obsolete would make a lot of people pretty mad. All for what? a little more space inside the phone? Doesn't make much sense to me
