My bigger concern, with no port, is CarPlay. Not many vehicles have wireless CarPlay, including mine. Maybe I'm missing something but how is that going to work without a port? Now you have to buy a new vehicle when a new phone comes out? 😂
I reckon they'll have Smart Connector to USB-A or USB-C cables.

If this comes to fruition next year, how will we do manual backups to the Mac?
I’m hoping that there is some sort of innovative ideas surrounding the MagSafe concept, would be great to see it also work as some sort of smart connector as well as power connector.

Could get some exciting and cool ‘drop on’ magnetic hubs - like the idea for iPads also.

I am not talking about iCloud backup. I am talking about doing a full encrypted backup using your Mac. At the moment, I can use WiFi with iMazing. However, it currently requires that the phone be plugged into the Mac during initial set up.

I don’t think apple will care in particular about how third party unsupported iphone backup apps connects to a no-port iPhone.

If there is something similar to a smart connector integrated to the iPhone, i image a lightning to smart connector adapter will be available (at least during a transition period). That would be useful for wired CarPlay as mentioned above.

Apple previously sold something similar during the 30 pin to lightning transition period as well.

One leaker claimed the iPad smart connector from the Magic Keyboard is being developed for iPhone to allow magnetic data connectors... that said, I expect them just to go wireless.

Also... hasn't backup to your Mac over Wifi been a thing for years?

I'm not talking about iCloud either, I don't even use iCloud. You can sync and backup your phone to your computer or a connected external drive over wifi. It does currently need to be plugged in the first time to turn these options on, but there's no reason this handshake couldn't be done wirelessly (the watch does it just fine).
