They know nothing. They’re just guessing based on what another company is doing. And “more affordable”? The 16e is more expensive than Apple’s previous cheapest iPhone. There’s nothing more affordable about it.

The 16 naming has given this away. They clearly want a phone to launch in Q1, helping to give a bump in iPhone sales as they start to decline until the main launch in Q3
That’s logical, it strengthens the iPhone marketing cycle having dual phone updates occurring Spring and Fall.

I must admit I'd always thought they should do this with the regular iPhone. Pro in Q3 for those who want the latest and greatest and Regular to follow in Q1, this would probably push more sales of the more expensive Pro as well, but I guess that would cause too much disruption (ie sales would fall in with only one model of iPhone launching in Q3) so they've decided to do this with a new model.

Let's see how it goes.

Perfect! That way I can keep enjoying my SE3 q couple more of years, and jump to the iPhone 18e when it launches with the A20 chip and hopefully 12GB of RAM.

I’m pretty happy with my SE3, but let’s be honest, the 16e is really tempting with such awesome battery life.

Hopefully, Apple puts in the critical parts this time, like the iPhone 16 main camera and Dynamic Island.
I know you said “hopefully”, but I honestly think Apple is going to stick with the 16e design (1 single camera in the back and a notch on the screen) for at least a couple more of generations. Either for cost cutting, or to not cannibalize the main iPhone sales. Actually both are good reasons.

Apple rarely has a consistent numbering or lettering system for their products.

It’s one of the biggest ironies

For a company that has so much attention to detail, they just have never been able to decide and stick to a model numbering system or lettering system

I find it an abomination compared to the consistency and thought they usually put into everything else in their products
Yep, their numbering, lettering and naming system across all product and services lines are a joke. The buck stops at the top.

The lineup pricing structure will be really odd if the 16 gets knocked down $100 in September. The 16e is dead with the full-fledged 16 just $100 above it. Maybe that’s what they want…

Samsung
Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 Lite, Galaxy Note 10 Lite, Galaxy S20 FE, Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy S24 FE

Pixel 3a, Pixel 4a, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8a

Apple
iPhone SE 2016, iPhone SE 2020, iPhone SE 2022, iPhone 16e

If they don’t release a 17e this time next year then we will know for sure that they will probably wait the normal 3 years for a update.

Normal three years is for the SE. This isn't an SE, so who knows?

I suspect it's going to be the like (X)a line of Pixels.

I dunno if the gamble pays of to copy the Pixel a series pays off. Especially since the Pixel a series seems to offer a bit more.

With 7 years of promised OS upgrades the Pixel a series seems to be bound to entice more people that are not beholden to one or the other ecosystem of products.

The a series can also do colors instead of the boring 16e offer.

Heck, even I think about switching back to an Android phone, if my 13 minis bites the dust.
The Pixel a has some serious disadvantages:

- Tensor is a really mediocre processor (for the device's price).
- Modem is a Samsung one very unreliable.
- Storage is UFS 3.O, very slow (which in combination with Tensor, makes some tasks painfully slow).

And those problems are also part of the issues with Pixel 9/9 Pro/9 XL and 9 Fold.

On the other hand, while the iPhone screen is locked to 60 Hz and it packs a single camera, at least the storage is really fast, and the A18 (even with one less GPU core) is still a top performer.

So not everything with the Pixel series is correct...

If so, they should have simply named it "e" so they will not be trying to sell a phone called 16e when 19 is being sold. Of course, they are presently selling 13 with 14, 15 and 16 available.

They aren't selling the 13 and 14 new, only refurb. Maybe they will drop the base model 16 when the 17 comes out, and just keep the 16e until the 17e?

My suspicion is that if the 16e doesn't sell well, Apple will use the Mini casings to add a 16e mini (or 17e mini) to the lineup at the $499 price point. If the 16e does sell well, then we will stay as we are, holding $599 as the iPhone entry price.
The 16e will sell well enough, given that it will be the go-to for business phone bulk purchases. Ironically, if the SE2/3 hadn’t existed, the mini could have had that role.
