keep this years around and you have a more affordable option for people and another income stream.
…which will also have a reduced support lifetime from year to year. At an estimated amortized yearly price of $75-85 (7-8 years of support), it’s not that much of a bargain, effectively only a $15-25 price reduction when you buy it next year for $100 less but also receive one year less of support than if you’d bought it this year.

That’s logical, it strengthens the iPhone marketing cycle having dual phone updates occurring Spring and Fall.
You can now buy the “latest iPhone” twice a year. ;)

The lineup pricing structure will be really odd if the 16 gets knocked down $100 in September. The 16e is dead with the full-fledged 16 just $100 above it. Maybe that’s what they want…
Or maybe they’ll lower the price of the 16e already in September. How about:

$549 iPhone 16e
$749 iPhone 16
$849 iPhone 17 (because ProMotion or some other excuse)

The 16e will sell well enough, given that it will be the go-to for business phone bulk purchases. Ironically, if the SE2/3 hadn’t existed, the mini could have had that role.
Businesses are gonna eat this 16e lineup up. This phone is free or near free with most trade ins.

Apple rarely has a consistent numbering or lettering system for their products.

It’s one of the biggest ironies

For a company that has so much attention to detail, they just have never been able to decide and stick to a model numbering system or lettering system

I find it an abomination compared to the consistency and thought they usually put into everything else in their products
They’ve had some doozies. I remember the iPad 3 being called, wait for it, “the new iPad.” That was the name.

They aren't selling the 13 and 14 new, only refurb. Maybe they will drop the base model 16 when the 17 comes out, and just keep the 16e until the 17e?
No way they drop the 16 standard early. The 16e for the price does not even have MagSafe and people are very mad 😡 about that.

Seriously! The budget iPad is an "iPad", the step up is an iPad Air. The budget watch is an SE, the step up is plain "Watch." The budget iPhone now is "e." The budget laptop is "Air." The budget desktop is "mini". And it's Pro, Ultra, Pro, Pro, Studio on the high end. Why not standardize? Is it a way to force people to look at the details of each model, and make each product line feel distinct?

I guess I’m ready to upgrade from my 13 mini. I was hoping 16e would be great for a low price but I’ll pass. Hopefully 120hz display will be on the 17. Hiking in the back woods make satellite sos a must. The watch ultra 3 doesn’t seem compelling and I’d rather buy a an analogue watch.

The 16e does have satellite sos FYI, but of course does not have 120hz screen.

What will Apple differentiate between the 17e 16 and 17 base? Don’t think Apple will go with this lineup.

An ugly phone that nobody wants gets annual upgrades. The SE that everyone wanted left to die.

I was kind of impressed they had a phone without a yearly update cycle.

But a yearly update cycle as with the rest of the lineup means more products to support with components etc which adds to additional costs of different parts and storage.

This also goes against environmentals. But I guess this is the direction things are heading in again anyhow.

Have they dropped Mother Nature?
I think smart phone innovation has slowed down so much it makes sense to do two year update instead of annual. Maybe stagger between the Pro and Non-Pro series.
