Leaker: iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max to Feature Faster 120Hz Displays

Retina ProMotion

Please do this with your portables and iMacs. How this hasn't happened already is hard to understand.

Once you have even a 75Hz, let alone a 144/165Hz display, you will never go back to 60Hz.
I have the 120 Hz iPad Pro 10.5. IMO, it’s nice but not a make or break feature for general usage.

Weird. For me there's a huge difference. Scroll through some menus and then toggle "Limit frame rate" in accessibility > motion and then try scrolling again. I just tried it again now and the difference is very noticeable.

i see no difference, everything gets blurry when I scroll fast either way. Also see no lag or anything when scrolling slower. Maybe I do need glasses haha

This is not a feature I am dying to have, but cool I get it, hopefully it can be disabled to preserve battery.

I’d rather have USB-C and multiplatform iMessage than “Pro”Motion.
I seriously doubt usb c will ever make its way to an iPhone, and I certainly hope it doesn’t. Hopefully Apple will remove all ports before adopting a connector inferior to lightening.

Same. Looks jerky as hell when limited to 60.

Then again, I like high frame rates, I bought one of the first 144hz G-Sync monitors, still works like a champ.

Oddly, given all the above, when I go from iPad to iPhone, the iPhone doesn’t look jerky. Possibly due to much smaller screen, 60hz is immediately noticeable on my MacBook Pro.

In my experience, 90Hz is about where I stop seeing the benefits of higher rates. Especially with a smaller screen (120 makes more sense on a 12.9" iPad), I would be very happy with a 24-90 variable rate on the iPhone.

At this point it’s kind of expected that the flagships will have ProMotion, it’s the only worthwhile upgrade with USB-C. I sure as hell won’t be upgrading for a LIDAR sensor

How is USB-C inferior to lightning? That comment is kind of... delusional? Innocent?

Lightning is proprietary, restricted, weaker, and relies on USB 2.0 protocols released over 20 years ago. USB-C is an open standard, collaborative, supported by tech giants and small companies alike, it can deliver enough power to charge a 15 in computer, allows for huge data transfer rates and drives 4K screens with no lag.

USB-C > Lightning, USB-C is superior in every regard.

Bonus: And... I hate having to carry different cables everywhere I go. Another annoying thing is that I am never lucky with third-party lightning accessories even when they carry the "Mfi" stamp, many times they display the "accessory not supported" message and it drives me crazy.

Apple catching up again.

I’m pretty sure this could have been added in 2017 same year as iPad Pro but the battery life wasn’t up to par...should they release something with sunb par battery life just to get it out? No

Apple will never be first but when they bring it out it will be when they see the tech is ready with no issues. 120hz has caused issues on other devices with battery life concerns and screen design quality.

A smartphone can't really do much more at the moment other than make a cuppa coffee.

A smartphone can be much more energy efficient, including larger batteries/variable refresh rates. In terms of extra features, there's still a very wide gap between a phone and a laptop. Much of it can be supplemented with accessories such as keyboards/remote software, but until x86 apps can be emulated on an iPhone (doesn't seem to be too far off into the future at this point) or enough of them are re-compiled to run on ARM, that gap will remain quite wide.

My dream is to be able to play (and mod) WarCraft 3 on my phone, however that depends on Blizzard.

But but but what about the design? The squared off edges, which’ll be drooled over and officially regarded as better-than-rounded-off-edges and only truly appreciated by the 5% who don’t use a case, until 5 years from now when rounded-edges become hip again?

Promotion isn't locked to 120hz. From the details I can find it scales from 120Hz to 48Hz and 24Hz on the iPad. I assume it will work the same on the iphone.

It wont have the same effect on battery life as Android counterparts who lock it to one rate unless you manually change it.

Previous rumors stated that ProMotion would be in if Apple figured out the challenge of the battery life. The concern was that with the way ProMotion will be implemented on the iPhones (it’s HW and SW), they would not have fluctuating frequencies and you would not be able to toggle it on and off.

IF this rumor is true, then Apple somehow figured out the battery challenge.

It’s not a dealbreaker feature for me, but I’m interested in knowing the end result.

This is a risk taking prediction wow! These analysts really live on the edge, coming out with career defining analysis like this!

I’m not convinced about the effectiveness of the dynamic refresh rate battery saving feature with ProMotion on my 11” iPad Pro. Since buying an iPad 1 on launch day I’ve bought all but 2 generations of the iPad and my current one, last year’s Pro model, was my least satisfying iPad because it often wouldn’t get through a day without needing a top up charge. I’d never even noticed the ProMotion feature in the spec when I bought it but when I read about it in discussions on this forum a few months ago, and most importantly how to disable it in Settings, I immediately did that and the battery life has been way better on my iPad Pro ever since. I just hope there is the same option to totally disable it if/when ProMotion comes to the iPhone 12.
