What? What you wrote doesn’t make any sense. Why would you have to disable the device in order for it to work? And what does “in secret” mean? What are you talking about?

The sdk documentation is on the developer website. Your description bears no resemblance to how Apple says it works.

Seems you really don’t understand.

I stated it (FindMy) will work IF disabled - as in when someone steals your iPhone and powers it off and turns on AirPlane mode .

Apple:
The Find My app makes it easy to locate your Apple devices and keep up with friends and family. It works on iPhone, iPad and Mac — even if your missing devices are offline. And your privacy is protected every step of the way.

Makes sense now?

PS: UltraWideBand was the technology only on newer iPhones I was trying to mention as well when I said the name of the technology escapes me for the moment.

I have Tile and use it to find my keys and find my wallet. That’s it. I’ve no interest in AirTags.
Unless Apple is doing something revolutionary with their tags compared (form, function and/or price) to the competition I'm going to try Tile. Been on the fence for a while but holding out to see what Apple brings to the table - but the wait is getting ridiculously long.

For crying out loud, just release the AirTags and I can forget them fast. I'll be the first, second, etc., to admit: I don't need every object in my life added to the IoT.

I have no complaints.... bought a 4-pack of Tile Pro on Black Friday a while back and works great. Had one in my wallet, but then bought a sealed Slim 2020 on eBay for a decent price. Can't complain, much better as credit-card sized. Be interesting to see what Apple offer, and especially if there are different AirTags for different uses (like the Tile Pro for keys and Tile Slim for wallets)

Looking at Tile's they are somewhat limited in range. If Apple through their network of devices and and "lost mode" with the tags can go beyond this to be virtually limitless it would be a huge difference. Imagine someone stealing your luggage or it get's lost at baggage claim at the airport (has happened to me more than a few times...) and being able to find it.

Yes, if it has some kind of "crowdsourcing" to locate a Tag then that's both good for locating, and bad for privacy possibly. They would probably work like AirPods, as they have no internal cellular network or (maybe) GPS chip to provide an accurate location. For the purpose I bought them for, Tile work great.

Apple’s approach is good for locating and has no privacy implications. Your device passes a tag, it uploads that tag’s location without attaching any data about itself, and without you knowing it is happening. It waits until the radio needs to be turned on for another reason, so it not even directly tied to where you are now.

There are potential privacy implications, which it is currently unclear as to how things will work out, but they could be significant.

For example, if the Airbags cane tracked then what is to stop someone from slipping one into someones bag and then tracking where they go? A solution that has been proposed in places (including here) would be a notification to say that an airtag has been travelling near your phone, but what can be done about that? If the tracked person has the option of stopping their phone tracking the tag then it doesn't stop other phones doing so. Maybe they can stop that airtag tracking completely, but then what if it is just that I have placed my luggage in a train with an airtag in it and someone sitting nearby gets the warning? If they can turn off the tracking then that defeats the object of the tag for many people.

Another potential use for tags is to leave one in a car as a tracker if the car gets stolen. Again, if the thief gets a notification that he is being tracked (and even worse, an option to turn it off) then the use of the tag is lost.

I'm no expert on this, but my interest in airtags is to track luggage (I've spent long enough at airports waiting for my luggage, which has occasionally been in a totally different airport), but these sort of questions need clarifying before it is clear as to whether the airtags will actually do what some of us are looking for.

Apple are generally good at finding solutions to these things which the likes of me don't even think of, so we will see what happens when it is announced.

Hahahah another amazing prediction fail by Prosser. If you guess 100 times and 1 guess becomes true.. you’re a professional leaker worth front page, every day of the week😂
Think you will find all the leakers were wrong on this one even a guy who has a 97.8% track record.

no leaker is 100% correct people need to stop assuming they are flawless.

Mmm my leaker senses are tingling..

Are you Prosser by any chance? Definitely defending him preee hard:p

Don’t need to defend him, his track record is one of the best. Like all leakers nobody is going to be 100% accurate but many in here seems to think that should be the expection.

Even leakers who are more accurate were wrong about the March event. Guess the keyboard warriors have higher expections than they should have. Leakers get stuff wrong and sometimes are wrong due to sources being fed wrong information or god forbid Apple changes the plans
