Leaker Says Apple's Lower-Cost MacBook Will Have These 8 Limitations

So basically, as I suspected and said on earlier posts, the cheap MacBook will be Apple’s overpriced version of a Chromebook.

Its sole reason for existence is to entice disaffected Google and Windows users to enter the Apple Subscription Ecosystem.

Yeah I’m going to call BS on some of this. Apple currently doesn’t feature a product with at least 500 nits of brightness. They’re not going to start now.

And even the 11th gen iPad has True Tone. This will too.

And MediaTek currently doesn’t supply Apple with anything as of yet, I highly doubt the low cost MacBook is the place to start. USI already supplies the 10/11 gen iPad and Vision Pro. Much better choice for a low cost wifi/bt solution as I’m assuming this won’t have WiFi 7.
 
im trying to think if any of these would be a dealbreaker for a "fun computer" around the house or for light travel. The backlit keyboard may be the only thing that would be a disappointment, True Tone is nice but as long as it has an ambient light sensor then im ok. Really this Mac may be my iPad Pro replacement simply because a lot of my work has focused more on utilizing AI and I cannot install Claude plugins in different apps on the iPad.

Same here. The 512GB limitation only matters the day you buy it (i.e. no MacBooks are expandable anymore), and these are not for 8K video editing. My wife maintains exactly 3 spreadsheets, has a 25GB iTunes library, does email, syncs her phone, and searches the web. This is all she needs. However, I think I might still be forced to spend twice as much to get the 15” Air (16/512) since we’re both old and need the screen real estate for our comically large fonts.

With all the potential omissions is there even a point of this device…? You can get a M4 MacBook Air 13” for $700-750 on the random deals that pop up from time to time.


Unless they just want this to become the default K-12 device in schools. I feel like post-COVID this might be tough to do.
 
Sounds like the old MacBooks with the Core M3 chipsets from 2015-2019. Their storage options were limited to 256 and 512 GB.
 
the original polycarbonate MacBook didn’t have backlit keys either but it’d be an easier pill to swallow if the 2015 MacBook didn’t as well (it did).

Though backlit keys are a feature that’s exclusive to the MacBook Pros/Airs as that’s not even something you’d get with a Pro desktop Mac experience unless you get a third party keyboard.
 
They could price it at bait & switch levels. You go into an Apple store enticed by the low-ball pricing of the new MacBook. But the salesperson convinces you to go for the MacBook Air. Mission accomplished.
