Why? They do colors and black bezels on their phones.
That's the iPhone lineup - different set of design challenges than Mac, hence don't necessarily need to resemble as much. That said, no guarantee iPhone 14 (perhaps next SE?) won't have white bezels. Guess we'll see...

Also, the iPad Air 4 has colors for the shell and black bezels.

Many times I said: oh, Apple made a mistake... and in the end I had to admit that their solution was brilliant.

I am almost sold on the notch, so I can picture me buying the new iMac 27" with a notch and white bezels.

But boy it really looks weird.
It’s not clear that Apple would feel the need for a notch on something like the iMac where there is a lot more depth for cameras and less need for the smallest case. It would not take a large bezel to house the cameras on a iMac.

Well... I like this. That's all I can say. Notch doesn't bother me either way. I'm actually more concerned about the machines taking on the pastel colors. I love red. I do not love pink, lol.
I’m with you on that. I loved the saturated base colors of the 24” iMacs but was disappointed that they turned them into pastels on the surfaces facing the user. I know that they wanted to minimize distraction with the screen but pastels are not less distracting to me.

Colourful MacBook Air with off-white bezels?

Exploding heads—check.
Forecasts of massive failing sales—check.
Apple can barely keep up with demand due to new design’s popularity—check.

The last point is likely a certainty particularly if Apple can keep the price reasonable. If the new Air is also a 14in. design then so much the better.

The rumour is the new Air will lose it’s wedge shape. If so then they should put back the SD card slot like they did with the Pro.

Looks hideous. Makes me want to get the current M1 MacBook Air before they are discontinued. The Space Grey current version is an awesome looking machine and very Pro looking. It’s basically a MacBook Pro Lite.

"Our pro users do not use SD Cards. In fact, they sit in all white rooms and browse the internet all day at a 60hz refresh rate. They also hate dark mode so we disabled that feature on the new MacBook Air, and they only use AirPods, so we removed the headphone jack."

I would buy this phone in a heartbeat. I loved my white iPhones. My gen1 iPad Pro is white. I loved my white eMac and iMac G4. These were so nice compared to the my beige SE/30 to my PowerPC 601 years. I love the new iMac, just wish it had a fusion drive so I could afford storage space. I think external HD and dongles defeat the purpose of AIO desktop. Silver and white is classy imho.
I also love my 2011 MacBook Air. Beautiful Silver bezels. I would have an M1 Air if it had silver bezel. Even my big screen TV is silver framed. I do not like black boxes. I wish all my home theater equipment was silver, grey or even white.
The black keys on the Air are nice also with the contrast of the silver unibody case top. I do not like the new all black key well in new MBP, 80s data entry terminal.
Im not sold on notch, I do not mind bezels like so many complain about. If there is a notch then Im okay with white notch. better than black for me. The white and silver bezels really look better and fade into most home walls.

Apple had many pro machines with white.

To me it makes more sense that these will be regular MacBooks and the MacBook Air is a different product.

"The borders are meant to complement the typical home design, for one, and blend into the background," Colleen Novielli, Apple's head of product and marketing, later explained in an interview. "The lack of the stark contrast provides a more seamless experience for the user."

Um, painted walls? Dark curtains or cabinets or desk in the work area? Who lives in a house that is mostly-white inside besides maybe Jony?

…the consumer segment most likely to appreciate iMac colors designed "to bring a sense of brightness, optimism, and joy."

?

Office workers in brightly lit environments are also likely to warm to the same design attributes, while using apps with white backgrounds such as spreadsheets and word processors, which pair well with the light gray bezels.

Except…dark mode?

What a great way to force consumers like me who don’t look at their devices as art first and foremost (and who can actually sometimes get turned off at art that tries too hard) to be upsold into a MBP.

Seeing all the “pro” users complain about a device not intended for them anyway is hilarious particularly after they just got two machines specifucally designed for them giving them most everything they hoped for.

I don’t know about that. Maybe there are quite a few past buyers of Pro machines who know they truly don’t need a Pro machine and know they would be well served by an M-series MBA but are rather turned off by this potential art direction of the MBA. We all knew Apple could stay so function-first-focused for too long after the recent MBP introduction. :)

I always thought that Apple would get rid of the 13in Pro when it updates the Air. But now I'm wondering if it will keep it around?

Update it slightly to match the Air (i.e. same upgrades it has now over the air) and give it a design similar to the new pros. And there's a machine that's slight more expensive (but cheaper than the 14in), and has a higher clock speed, than the Air with a design language some may consider more suited to the office style work and environment.

Air: Casual users (majority of users)
Pro 13in: Office work users (the machine most bought by companies and organisations for employees)
Pro 14+16in: Professionals (they know who they are)

Ugh, w/ notch no $. I personally think my next notebook will be a thinkpad with linux.

But as a Air costumer I don't want it to look "Pro" or be dark and unappealing. If you are working in media on a MacBook you have to put up with two unattractive things: 1. a price premium, and 2. depressing, unfriendly dark grey material.
If you have a career where you don't have to put up with those things, most will choose not to.

Dark greys and blacks is really the current era's "beige box". Like Steve said in 1997: These things are uuuuugly. Colour and white and off white saved Apple from near bankruptcy in the late 90s. How things look matter too.

Aren't there rumors of the iPhone 14 having a "hole punch" instead of a notch? Would (hypothetically) a notched MBA that comes out a few months earlier seem immediately out of date if the notch is eliminated from the iPhones 14 in the fall of 22? Plus, it should be even easier for these laptops to have a holepunch since the MacBooks don't have the same full iPhone array for FaceID + Front facing camera.

Order the current Air while you can. These look terrible. I'd rather go back to thinkpads than buy one of these.
Don't worry - this won't be the new Air. The current one is selling just fine, and like the last-gen Air, Apple will keep it around for a while. They would be crazy to change it.

These new rumored multiple colors, white bezel machines will replace the 13" MacBook Pro. It will be called MacBook, and Apple's laptop line will make some sense again.

I don’t mind the white but thumbs down if we keep up the pastel theme. I guess I’ll never get anything other than silver with the current offerings.

Lots of people do both. And in reality, there’s pretty much no one who does photo and video editing who doesn’t also use office-type apps. And there’s pretty much no one who wants a home computer who doesn’t want to use it for watching video and looking at photos. So unless they’re coming out with a machine with color-changing bezels, it’s not useful information.
I disagree. While I edit plenty of photos, I’m primarily an office/executive user. My primary use-case has much more influences on my choices than a secondary application such as photo editing, which means the iMac light grey bezels always work for me. On the other hand, just because a professional photographer sometimes uses office apps doesn’t mean she doesn’t want a black bezel all the time.

So now I’m going to need black bezels for dark mode and white bezels for light mode if I want to hide the notch! ?
