I can understand the OP, but its just the same with other platforms, my android phone did it..... do you have a google account please sign in.........do you have dropbox.......please sign in....
I personally prefer iCloud as its more simple, the google services and settings looks a big complicated mess to me.

Its the same on all platforms, just Apple seem to have everything under one roof, so to speak, it seems that way anyway.

Somebody got caught doing something shady =P
LMAO, I was just about to say!

Seems like OP got caught doing something dodgy and his other half saw it. Now his blaming "iCloud" for syncing all his stuff he done on another device that was signed into his account XD

On a serious note like other people said, saying iCloud is the main source of you switching to Android is not really a good reason to be honest...

People who usually post things like this (myself included) always want a second opinion just in case they are making the wrong decision. So basically the OP is 50/50 right now and cannot decide for himself whether to leave Apple and join Samsung, so we Macrumour forumers have to decide for him!

Anyone else find that Apple have gone too far with device integration across multiple platforms with iCloud? It's the reason I'm leaving Apple and getting rid of my iPhone, iMac and iPad.

I know iCloud is useful to many, but I have multiple devices I share with family members and find that iCloud has become so smothering with Keychain, Mail, Safari, Photos etc being shared between devices. Yes I know all of these can be disabled individually and/or iCloud turned off but Apple push you to use iCloud in some capacity so much! Starting up a new device for the first time, numerous screens asking for Keychain, iCloud permissions etc.

I just want to use my phone, laptop, desktop and tablet without having to keep track of which devices have which information.

welcome to google cloud! :)

your photos, mails will published to their cloud (which you can also disable). Some devices, like Samsung, have their own cloud on top, that also wants your pictures (same with Microsoft One drive). By default, using the GPS will send your position to Google database and you can even access the map that shows where you have been. All enabled by default.

switching providers doesn't fix the issue, it could even make it worse since you may not know everything that is collected and how to disabled them.

I don't mind it that much.. I love how google now works on Android. It scans my email and show me package tracking, flight information automatically without me doing anything.. it's really something I came to appreciate.

PS:
I have a Samsung Android device & Windows, Linux & Mac computers

My problem with iCloud is it doesn't work on PowerPC Macs running OS X 10.5.8 Leopard. I.e., most of my Macs. It doesn't work on my MBP running OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

Google Contacts WILL work on any device I have, including those aforementioned Macs.

I guess some people do not like logging in and believe Google's services are intrusive. OK sure, there's a valid point to that, but just try and get iCloud working on an Android device. Not going to happen.

And when we start adding in two-step verification with Apple ID and app-level passwords that's when things start getting VERY irritating.

What about when your device is constantly bugging you to sign in with your Apple ID for no reason?

I am not saying Google services are better. I'm just saying that iCloud services are no better and no worse. Use whatever service works for you.

Apple isn't forcing anyone to use their services; it's all optional. Just like Apple cannot force me to use a modern Mac. My other options allow me to continue to use 15 year old equipment.

I didn't realize that so many iPads and other tablets were shared by multiple users, if that is the case. I consider my iPad just as personal an item as my iPhone. I wouldn't share either with anyone.

We have iPads all over the house. They're mostly used each by a single person, but we also often just grab the nearest one.

Other families might have only a single iPad, shared all the time.

The system works fine if the ideal person has one phone and an iPad and wants synchronicity across those devices without sharing to others.

Multiply that by a family, equals pain. icloud is designed as a person, not a group. that's it problem.

I think a lot of this is because of the company leadership.

Tim Cook isn't married with kids, for example. Other higher ups in Apple have families, but also no doubt have a dedicated iPad for each person.

Probably the biggest reason dates back to Jobs himself. It is the utmost in irony and hypocrisy that Jobs hawked tablets and other iDevices so much to the general public, yet he himself refused to let his own kids use iPads, because he felt that such devices destroyed the family fabric. He thought people got addicted to using devices instead of interacting in person. And boy, was he right.

Our house has separate devices for everybody. Not just Idevices. Each of us has a Windows desktop and Windows laptop.

None of us eschew a device over the family or interaction. A time and place for everything. Taught our kids well.

FYI, Google is no longer providing Chrome updates to 10.7 and below.

I don't think tablets have reached a point where it is a must-have device for everyone.

I remember the time when entire family shared one or two computers - 90s and early 2000s. We, and everyone else who had "only" one or two computers in each household, got by just fine. Now it's different. Not only does each member of the family have his/her own computer, but also it is normal to see people owning at least 2 computers - desktop + notebook + computer at work, etc. My parents and I have 5 computers combined. This would have been unthinkable when "personal" computer was still at formative years. But now if you ask me whether it is absolute mandatory to have both my iMac and MBP, then yes. I can't live with only one of them.

I guess this is what Apple and other manufacturers are trying to do with "PC replacement" logic - a tablet in everyone's hand. My family generally uses tablets for streaming, browsing and sharing vacation pictures with guests. Do we need more than one tablet for such purposes? Well, at least, not yet.

I guess it is pretty clever for Apple and other manufacturers not to have implemented multi-user accounts on tablets.

Thanks!

I'm using TenFourFox on my PowerMacs and PowerBooks. That's equivalent to Firefox 38 right now. Chrome won't run on those. And I'm using the G3 version of TenFourFox under Rosetta on my MBP. Again, equivalent to FF 38.

Chrome is ok. I use it on occasion, but I hate how it handles tabs.

No problem. Not a big fan of Chrome either.

I fully agree that Apple needs to support multiple user profiles on iDevices and Apple TVs. My household has more than one iPad per person, but everyone uses all of them. Also, some of the content I might save in my Apple TV profile wouldn't necessarily be what I would put front and center for my kids (and games should track scores by person, etc.), so profiles are needed there as well.

As to the iCloud services part, though, I don't get the complaint. I use certain iCloud services and don't use others. For the ones I don't use, I don't check the boxes. I've never felt any pressure whatsoever to use the services I chose not to.

A few months ago I went through the same frustration and actually jumped ship. I also installed Windows 10 to seriously test drive the idea of switching. I've been on OS X since 2002 and run my business using Macs. Like most people, I have all the other gadgets like iPads and Apple Watch, plus a few Macs.

Same exact reason. I felt taken hostage by iCloud. Long story short, I found how painful the change was and how clumsy everything became. One thing I noticed right away was the lack of syncing of contacts. Drove me nuts in just a day or two. Totally lost interest in switching to anything else...
