This is exactly the question I want to know. Seems they should but if it's
truly the top 5% then it probably wont unless people start using more data.
Is the 5% of all AT&T users or 5% of unlimited data users?

With the new Tiered plans, I wonder if it will change the threshold from ~2GB to ~3GB where throttling begins?
They told us if we continue to get warnings about hitting the top 5% they would terminate us...but we have new iPhones that only work on AT&T. I asked them since we only used 2.6 GB, why that was considered HIGH DATA USE, when their mid tier was only 2GB! They said they put us in with the unlimited group and do not judge us by the Tiered group...but if they are throttling the unlimited group eventually one tiny little Google will get you throttled. What makes me mad is that we put up with terrible service for years, and never complained because we loved our phones. This is not even a small attempt to cover up the fact they want the grandfathered people out. Unfortunately they forget consumers have long memories of being treated this way, they forgot the lesson of Sprint, and Netflix. This is exactly the question I want to know. We are on a family iPhone Plan. One of our iPhones only was a little over 2GB, 2.6 to be exact. We contacted AT&T to find out what the limit on our Grandfathered Unlimited Plan was and they refused to tell us. They said the use was a 2.6 and that most users used less and so therefore we were threatened to be throttled. Now we have gone through hell with AT&T, for 5 years because we loved our iPhone, we have not been able to use our phones to talk more than 5 minutes at a time because the call drops every 5 min, so you give up (another form of throttle?) We never complained, just put up with it, we also have bad service on and off. I pointed out that the mid range plan was just 2GB and they said that we are not thrown in with that group. That is the tiered group and we were judged to be in the 5% high data usage in with the unlimited group....(does an unlimited limit even make sense to anyone?) AND they are THROTTLING the unlimited group as much as they are suddenly...this could drop to NILL soon. She said that AT&T could terminate us at any time. This is a problem because I have a new iPhone that doesn't work on any other network, with a protection plan and accessories and tons of apps...and there are 3 of us on this plan all with the same iPhone and accessories....making it all worthless if they drop us. We have no way of knowing when we reach the top 5% because it fluctuates, and you do not have an idea what that limit is because they only provide you with that warning until it's too late and you can not use your phone the rest of the billing cycle.
THIS IS THE SHADIEST DEAL EVER! It's a barely disguised attempt to get rid of the grandfathered in people. WE NEED A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT!

We need to fight back...any attorneys out there care to take this on?
How so? Please, if you don't have anything productive and OT let's keep the insults out of the thread. As has been stated by many, we're adults here, let's keep this civil.![]()
I left AT&T because it would have cost me a ridiculous deposit to open up my own account since I'm only 19, and went with Sprint. I'm actually quite satisfied with them. But data speeds aren't that great on Sprint so I don't think you would be too happy with them. No carrier beside Sprint even offers unlimited data so I don't know what your options even are...
You pretty much lost your right to b!tch about AT&T with this one comment. Now we have gone through hell with AT&T, for 5 years because we loved our iPhone, we have not been able to use our phones to talk more than 5 minutes at a time because the call drops every 5 min,...
Rule #1: Find a carrier that has the coverage and service you need.
Rule #2: Pick a phone that meets your needs.
Rule #3: If you started with Rule #2, you lost any right to complain about your carrier.

I've gone over 2GB every month for more than a year.
Not a peep.
That sucks, but the point to my post was there is no 2GB hard limit before one gets throttled.Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)
I hit 2GB on Sunday while in Dallas. Got a text and the throttling started. Last check I was at 31 kB/s. Like a legless turtle - who happens to be dead.
I'm sorry to be a bit out of topic, but I'm curious ... what's your up/downlink speed after being throttled? 1 Mbps? Less?
I'm not based in US, so yes I want to know about your country's fair usage policy. I googled and can't find exact answer of how much bandwidth allocated post-throttling.
In my place, our carriers do not provide fast AND unlimited broadband internet. It's either decent 3.6 or 7.2 Mbps volume based connection (but you must pay more for excessive data usage), or measly 512kbps for true unlimited connection. Pick your poison?![]()

The phone is completely unusable once throttled. It takes longer for a 2 minute youtube clip to buffer than it does to play it let alone stream netflix, pandora, etc. It's pathetic
Because no Apple employee in their right mind that had information about the next iPhone would even consider the thought of coming to an online forum and release details about it before the announcement. It'd be career suicide and you'd have the Worldwide Loyalty Team on you in a heartbeat. Nevermind that you'd be sued into oblivion. How's that NDA you signed doing?
