With the new Tiered plans, I wonder if it will change the threshold from ~2GB to ~3GB where throttling begins?

we will shortly find that out. I know it will be ridiculous to get throttled @ 2GB when you're paying 30 bucks, which is the same price as the capped 3GB. So this change might be good for unlimited users.

I hit 7650MB (7.65GB) 14 days into my billing cycle, still not throttled.

Its clear to me that AT&T isn't throttling the culprits (me). It looks like they might be targeting random users in high usage areas. I have some friends that also have high usage and no throttling yet.

They are just doing what they want. I dont believe they are even keeping track of 5%. The reps on the phone even say there is now way for them to tell. Managment just decides on a number and they do it. I bet they go down to 1.5gigs to make the 30$ plan even more attractive.

Its the fox watching the hen house and having chicken for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Class action lawsuit needed

We are on a family iPhone Plan. One of our iPhones only was a little over 2GB, 2.6 to be exact. We contacted AT&T to find out what the limit on our Grandfathered Unlimited Plan was and they refused to tell us. They said the use was a 2.6 and that most users used less and so therefore we were threatened to be throttled. Now we have gone through hell with AT&T, for 5 years because we loved our iPhone, we have not been able to use our phones to talk more than 5 minutes at a time because the call drops every 5 min, so you give up (another form of throttle?) We never complained, just put up with it, we also have bad service on and off. I pointed out that the mid range plan was just 2GB and they said that we are not thrown in with that group. That is the tiered group and we were judged to be in the 5% high data usage in with the unlimited group....(does an unlimited limit even make sense to anyone?) AND they are THROTTLING the unlimited group as much as they are suddenly...this could drop to NILL soon. She said that AT&T could terminate us at any time. This is a problem because I have a new iPhone that doesn't work on any other network, with a protection plan and accessories and tons of apps...and there are 3 of us on this plan all with the same iPhone and accessories....making it all worthless if they drop us. We have no way of knowing when we reach the top 5% because it fluctuates, and you do not have an idea what that limit is because they only provide you with that warning until it's too late and you can not use your phone the rest of the billing cycle.
THIS IS THE SHADIEST DEAL EVER! It's a barely disguised attempt to get rid of the grandfathered in people. WE NEED A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT!

----------

This is exactly the question I want to know. Seems they should but if it's
truly the top 5% then it probably wont unless people start using more data.
They told us if we continue to get warnings about hitting the top 5% they would terminate us...but we have new iPhones that only work on AT&T. I asked them since we only used 2.6 GB, why that was considered HIGH DATA USE, when their mid tier was only 2GB! They said they put us in with the unlimited group and do not judge us by the Tiered group...but if they are throttling the unlimited group eventually one tiny little Google will get you throttled. What makes me mad is that we put up with terrible service for years, and never complained because we loved our phones. This is not even a small attempt to cover up the fact they want the grandfathered people out. Unfortunately they forget consumers have long memories of being treated this way, they forgot the lesson of Sprint, and Netflix.
We need to fight back...any attorneys out there care to take this on?

Wow. That's insane. I'm kind of speechless. I don't think they're going by "the top 5%" anymore. I think they decided that unlimited data users can only use 2GB. I mean, that's where I've been capped for the past two months. My phone's wifi doesn't work for some odd reason. So AT&T has left me with an unusable phone.
Honestly, we either need to sue, or wait until the last day of the billing cycle and stream as much data as possible (assuming you aren't throttled)

Before you can sue you need to go to abitration as described in the wireless agreement. Send a certified letter to the CFO saying that your effective service area has been materially decreased and you demand out of your contract with no ETF. then sell your iPhones and fire AT&T. I did and my letter is in the mail.

How so? Please, if you don't have anything productive and OT let's keep the insults out of the thread. As has been stated by many, we're adults here, let's keep this civil. :)

Because no Apple employee in their right mind that had information about the next iPhone would even consider the thought of coming to an online forum and release details about it before the announcement. It'd be career suicide and you'd have the Worldwide Loyalty Team on you in a heartbeat. Nevermind that you'd be sued into oblivion. How's that NDA you signed doing?

I left AT&T because it would have cost me a ridiculous deposit to open up my own account since I'm only 19, and went with Sprint. I'm actually quite satisfied with them. But data speeds aren't that great on Sprint so I don't think you would be too happy with them. No carrier beside Sprint even offers unlimited data so I don't know what your options even are...

That sucks. I signed up by myself when I was 18, no deposit.

Now we have gone through hell with AT&T, for 5 years because we loved our iPhone, we have not been able to use our phones to talk more than 5 minutes at a time because the call drops every 5 min,...
You pretty much lost your right to b!tch about AT&T with this one comment.
If the service was that bad, you shoudl have returned the phones and canceled within the 30 day trial period.
You chose to continue with crappy service and even went so far as to renew your contract when you bought yet another iPhone with them.

Your broke rule #1 when buying cell service.

You chose the phone before picking a provider.

Rule #1: Find a carrier that has the coverage and service you need.
Rule #2: Pick a phone that meets your needs.
Rule #3: If you started with Rule #2, you lost any right to complain about your carrier.

Also, READ your contract.... don't just sign it and run away giddy with your shiny new toy.
AT&T reserves the right to cancel any contract if they feel you're abusing their service.
Is their definition of "abuse" absurd... yes.
But it's their house, so you have to play by their rules.
After all... you agreed to their rules when you signed the contract.

I'm sure AT&T's lawyers when over this whole BS top 5% crap with a fine tooth comb and know they will win if it ever goes to court.
the TOS is in AT&T's favor, not the consumers.

The 2GB thing is a myth.
I've gone over 2GB every month for more than a year.
Not a peep.

I hit 2GB on Sunday while in Dallas. Got a text and the throttling started. Last check I was at 31 kB/s. Like a legless turtle - who happens to be dead.

That sucks, but the point to my post was there is no 2GB hard limit before one gets throttled.
It all depends on location.
I go well over 2GB every month here in north Phoenix... not a peep.

Based on the posts on their FB page it appears 2GB is the magic number for a lot of people.

I'm up to 3GB 18 days into my billing cycle and nothing yet...but to be honest I just recently (since late November) started going that high talking to my GF on skype who's overseas at the moment...and I'm in Houston

Finally gave in...

After two months of being throttled right above 2GB (approx. 2.3-2.5GB) to speeds of around 10-50kbs I finally switched to a tiered plan. The 5GB plan was already tempting, because I have a Wi-Fi iPad and liked the idea of it being mobile with my iPhone as a Hotspot. I also felt that for a tiered plan, 5GB + Hotspot for $50 a month wasn't terrible (considering our choices). Since I switched yesterday my speeds have gone back up to well over 5MB-7MB sec. :) Yep, they got to me, and I caved... but honestly, even with the hotspot, I don't see myself using 5GB in a month ever.

Buying unlimited iPhone data plan

I was wondering to those who are about to get rid of their AT&T iphone unlimited data plans would they be willing to sell their account? Because I'm willing to buy it.

I'm sorry to be a bit out of topic, but I'm curious ... what's your up/downlink speed after being throttled? 1 Mbps? Less?

I'm not based in US, so yes I want to know about your country's fair usage policy. I googled and can't find exact answer of how much bandwidth allocated post-throttling.

In my place, our carriers do not provide fast AND unlimited broadband internet. It's either decent 3.6 or 7.2 Mbps volume based connection (but you must pay more for excessive data usage), or measly 512kbps for true unlimited connection. Pick your poison? :D

Download speed before throttling: 4.01 Mbps
Download speed after throttling: .08 Mbps

Upload speed for some reason stayed consistent around 1-1.16 Mbps

The phone is completely unusable once throttled. It takes longer for a 2 minute youtube clip to buffer than it does to play it let alone stream netflix, pandora, etc. It's pathetic

Try 10-15Kbps. Its 2G speeds and slower. Getting 1Mbps even when not throttled is a miracle here. I average 150-200Kbps here at work, the best I've seen in town is about 1.4Mbps.

I managed to stave off being throttled this month up until my last week. But I got my text today. Now I'm pushing it back on AT&T and I used 4Gb last night, without tethering! I'm trying to hit 10Gb before my monthly usage resets.

This is exactly the point... why would they throttle you to the point that you still have usable streaming services? You would be using just as much data as you were beforehand...

I wasn't going to reply to this comment as it's simply unnecessary. How do you know that no Apple employee would do such? You would be surprised how many do. Certainly I would not through AAPL, but on my personal system AAPL looks the other way and has no way of knowing (there aren't teams of AAPL employees in Cupertino tracking the dozens and dozens of online forums, and even if so these sites are not obligated to release the personal data/IP of their users). AAPL is more concerned about their retail sect (and of course its top departments of which I am not a part).

As for a supposed NDA, my comments about the iPhone 5 were never made as "fact" and have been discussed for a long time on many forums. Stating an LTE iPhone is in the works is tantamount to stating the sky is blue at this point. Regardless, I never stated it was a certainty. There are ways in which language usage does not negate any signed agreements. :)

Yet if you believe this gives you pause to treat me [and others] in a disrespectful manner as you suggest, be my guest. It does seem rather silly. I don't even know who you are! :)

Thanks!

Premier vs non-premier?

For all the people who have been throttled, are any of you under a premier plan?
