Guys, was watching a youtube video, and came across this in the iOS 5 beta.

"LED flash for alerts" (See screenshot)

Does this mean Apple are adding an LED to the iPhone 5?

I don't think I've seen one on any other iPhone, or am I mistaken?

That feature uses the camera LED function (which only iPhone 4 has). It's been on a few betas already.

That's a shame, but what possible use would the flash be to alert you, the phone spends 90% of its time with its back facing down, the rest in your hand actually covering the flash. hmmmmm

it's very possible that there will be a front facing flash in a future iPhone, even the next one, maybe a decent resolution front facing camera with a flash, and the flash can be used for notifications, we'll have to wait and see.

as for your phone sitting on the back comment, actually alot of the time mine's the other way around. so it helps.

It's no use to me, but don't you imagine that the people who use this for accessibility won't put it with the back facing down? Or feel it vibrate in their hand? hmmmm

I was thinking about people who don't use it for accessibility...

Obviously for them it makes sense, but what about the rest of us?

Oh and "hmmm" means I'm thinking, not being rude.

well since it's specfically in the accessibility menu, why should they care about the rest of us........

well okay, in Lion I had to go into accessibility to turn on a feature I needed from SL which was not previously in accessibility...why does this specifically have to be an accessibility feature, when it could cater for all?

because that's how they designed it..... :p currently they've designed it for accessibility. they may, in future, make it mainstream for the general use with a flash on the front. but for now, it's accessiblily. there's a bunch of new accessibility stuff in iOS5

Exactly, not sure where this thread was veering off to but yes I, for one, would love these LED alerts to be able to face forward. Why not an LED facing forward and another facing backward (User configurable)?

I doubt the will implement a front facing flash I would prefer a led light near the top of the handset.

Anyone notice that the flash in beta 5 is much faster than in beta 4. I like it a lot more now. It's more of a constant strobe when the phone is ringing instead of a double flash every few seconds.

It would be neat if the little square on the home button was an led.

That is a genius idea! Now my home button feels boring :(
