Left, frees up much needed vertical space. I don't necessarily need all the width though for web browsing, and videos always go full screen so there's no issue with that.

True, retina resolution gives a lot of space, but this space is more needed vertically than horizontaly. Screens are wide nowadays. Seems like better idea to keep it on left. Just common sense.

I'm not arguing that, but my preference and what I'm used to is on the bottom. Plus, it depends allot on things like dock and physical/resolution screen size. For example, on a 27" display, even having a ginormous dock won't make much of difference. On 1280x800, users sometimes have to hide or put it on the left because the screen space is so cramped.

What key-combo did you use?
Well, nominally it is Cmd-Opt-Ctrl-D, but physically I just have to hit Ctrl-D because I remapped my Ctrl key to act as Cmd-Opt-Ctrl. That way I can make lots of custom shortcuts easily accessible.

is there a way to permanently hide the Mac Dock and Bring it back when required. I use some of the other APPS which also give Dock options !
Yes. Use these Terminal commands:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-delay -float 9999999;
defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-time-modifier -int 0;
killall Dock;

The first line disables appear-on-mouseover so the Dock only shows up when you hit the keyboard shortcut, the second line makes the dock appear instantly rather than sliding in and out (you can omit this line if you like the slide-in, or change the number to make it faster or slower), and the third line restarts the Dock so the changes take effect.

If you want to revert back, that’s as simple as:
Code:
defaults delete com.apple.dock autohide-delay;
defaults delete com.apple.dock autohide-time-modifier;
killall Dock;

When I actually need space, I just set the retina display to 1680x1050 mode. Most of the reason I see people using left/right/hidden is when they don't have enough space. I like custom icons, so I like have my pretty dock there.
I have mine at retina 1920×1200 all the time, and I still don’t want the Dock taking up space. Most of the time I have two windows open side-by-side, each filling exactly half the screen (props to BTT for making this possible) and not always from the same program. I want the windows as large as possible so I can see as much content as I can.

Also I just don’t use the Dock. About the only time I ever call it up is when I accidentally hit Cmd-M and minimize a window when I was aiming for Cmd-N. So basically never.

Exactly my point.. Placing the dock on the bottom is a total waste of screen real estate..

The downside though, is that the dock looks lower-detailed when placed on the left/right compared to bottom.. And you also lose the "Fan" view of the folders on your dock.. :(

When you say sliding in and out as in when it is on the left of the screen ? Didnt understand when you say second line makes the dock appear instantly, instantly where ? How ?

A point that everyone keeps mentioning when they read my post. We get it, its a waste. Frankly I don't care, sorry I don't have the same preference or "common sense" as you do, sheesh. That's why it's an option.

Congratulations, you don't use the dock. Do you want a cookie?

I guess I don't have common sense, nor do most of the people voted on the poll. Be sure to tell Apple to make dock left or right only.

I leave it at the bottom. I put my skype/Adium on the left as the desktop icons aligns right usually. So the dock on the left is not exactly convenient. Thought, ubuntu keeps the dock left.

I guess I need to look into other options.

Exactly my point and if you use a Dock APP like "Dragthing" which generally resides on the left of your screen, it becomes all the more difficult to keep the MAC OS Dock also on the left of the screen making things very cluttered.

Try it and see!

Normally, when you mouse-over or hit the key combo to bring up the Dock, the dock has an animation as it slides in from the edge of the screen. Then when you move the mouse or hit the shortcut again, it has an animation as it slides out off the edge of the screen.

That is the animation I am talking about, and the second of the Terminal commands I listed lets you control how quickly that animation plays. I wrote it with a 0 to completely disable the animation. That makes it so as soon as you mouse-over or hit the key combo, the Dock appears immediately with no animation. And it disappears instantly too when you hide it.

So, by combining the first command I posted, which prevents mouse-over from bringing up the Dock, with the second, which eliminates the slide-in animation, the result is that the keyboard shortcut makes the Dock appear and disappear instantly whenever you need it.

I still don't get around using the launchpad. Not really a fan and i find it hard to find applications. Also, maybe none of my keyboards have the launchpad key, so it doesn't get triggered.

you can map any function key for it, and you can organize apps in folders like iOS and i find that makes it significantly easier to find apps... i have 16 folders on mine and the workflow for me is a breeze :D

Is there a way to keep the appearance of the dock even when it is placed on either left/right?
The dock's design is different when placed on left/right compared with when placed on the bottom..

Technically, it's on the right side, but I use uBar and changed my autohide speed to some random number so it doesn't pop up.

Does UBAR not block the MAC Dock ? I know you have kept it on Autohide with a delayed pop up frequency ! But still is it not bugging ?

Bottom, autohide with full screen mode and simple swipe of the finger on Magic Mouse or hand gesture on track pass to move between pages.

I like it on the left too, my dock is not hidden but i removed the dock background in favour of having no background so you see the desutop picture. I wish there were more square laptops…

How do you remove the Dock Background?

Websites are generally vertical, so the more vertical space you can squeeze out, the better. So I put it on the left and hidden. There's loads of horizontal room that goes unused, so there it goes

Since clicking bottom in the poll a few days ago, I've moved my dock to left and I'll keep it that way. It gives a lot more space.

Just downloaded and turn my dock to OS X 10.8 Dock..

isn't OS X 10.8 a old to old dock as in something which was there in the last OS X version, So how does a old version OS X suits you ? Just for the Dock ? Does it not prove a bit of hassle for you ?
