Today I received my BTO 15 inch 2016 MBP. Opened it up. Started set up, and continued to get an error message that said the software needed updating. But then the update would not work and it prompted me to try again or to shut down. Spent 2 hours on the phone with apple tech support. No Luck. They sent me to the apple store. 1.5 more hours and they say nothing can be done. You need to return it.

Now Apple online store says I gotta wait like i am just ordering today 5 to 6 weeks. SO LAME.

Could it possibly be just too many people updating thus flooding the update server? Did you try again at another time?

Can you arrange a deal to keep that laptop until a replacement arrives?

I would look to troubleshoot, but if you took it to the Apple store and they couldn't fix it... then I figure something is wrong, and it's not just a software/connection issue. (Unless if you got help from lazy staff).

I spoke with the store manager at sherman oaks. Really nice guy. Gave it to two of his better people in the back, but they could not get it to start up. I just spoke to the online store to reorder, and they are telling me December 21st for my replacement.

SO WRONG

Thats a smart idea... At the apple store the computer did the update... I was ready to go home, but I asked the manager, to wait while i did a restart... sure enough after the restart it did it again...

The device does not work at all without updating?? I believe if Apple tech people could not fix the problem then you should immediately return it. Anyways, 21st December is a long time to go... That's so unfair of Apple to give a faulty device first and then refused to replace it before the actual delivery time (5-6 weeks)

Even internet recovery mode?

It booted in utility mode and I could get on the internet. It was an intermittent problem. I guess Im most bothered that they won't expedite one to me.

Yeah I agree with you... I was worried about keeping it and then later on having issues with it.

Thats the worst. GL on the wait. :(

THANK YOU

THANK YOU

I'm sorry to hear that, Apple's QA department needs to get their jobs done better.

What was your config?

I see a BTO replacement having to wait for them to build a new one, but moving to the back of a long line is kinda crappy. How far did you make it up the phone ladder when you called?

there was a guy on here yesterday or the day before that had the exact same problem as you.

First he says it won't work after update, then it's an intermittent problem (?) aka they got it to work you're just expecting it to stop working again, (updates are quite simple) the apple store was able to do the update, and finally after they let you return it for your money back, you are complaining that a brand new order won't be expedited?

are you serious.

dude the macbook pro shipments have been delayed some people have dec. shipping dates.

I've never had a macbook pro that needed updating just to start working right out of the box.

is this your first computer?

Why would he/she want to keep it if it doesn't work at all?

To OP, I'm sure a replacement will come much sooner than you think. Preorders are moving up very quickly, just as they did with the iPhone 7. I'm seeing people who had late December delivery dates already have their MBPs preparing for shipment today. Still sucks that you got a lemon though.

Nope this is my 5th MAC. I currently have a 2012. The computer needed an update. Then they took it in the back and it booted up. Then there was a software update we did, then I restarted and the issue came back... They took it back to the back of the store and came back out and said we think you should return it.

Thanks for posting this. Yeap same issue.

lol nvm if its the "critical" update and fail notification that is hilariously awful.

It looks more like a software problem that could probably be fixed by apple with another update though.

Just got off the phone with Apple Online management team... they said they are going to expedite my order, but could not give me an exact date. Right now I have a date of 12/22 - 12/28

It's odd Apple are making you wait 5-6 weeks for delivery.
When I got my 15" rMBP back in 2012 it had numerous dead pixels, they relaced it in around a week (despite shipping times on the store being 3-4 weeks). The replacement also had a dead pixel, and again, was replaced in just under a week.

Hopefully it'll get sorted out soon! :)

I had this problem as well. I tried four times, gave up and called Apple. The Apple guy guided me through the same process I had been doing, and suddenly it worked. I could only think some kind of server load or transient network problem.

The MBP shipping thread. It's a sticky on the MacBook Pro subforum.
Yeah I've been following that one. I must have missed where late December people were getting PFS. The most recent I had seen were people that were Nov 25-Dec 2 getting PFS. (I'm in the Dec 8 - Dec 14 group). I am hopeful it will mean I will get mine earlier!

I had the computer go through one time also... But then the error message came back.
