Somehow it's hard to believe that any of you are actually out of high school, let alone having an advance degree.

All this tech talk is hurting my head. Is there any hope for a technology that will allow us to actually use cell phones outside of urban centers?

Satellite phones! But really, this can only be fixed by more towers, not by a different frequency. :(

The iPhone is ALMOST the sole reason I am on AT&T. The ONLY other reason I would have even debated AT&T was I got tired of not being able to get the phones I wanted whether they were on my carrier or not. For example, there are plenty of great GSM phones I can buy unlocked and activate on AT&T. Verizon and Sprint I usually had to sit back and wait. Otherwise, AT&T wouldn't even be on my radar.

I agree with that for sure. As I said, iPhone was not my top reason, but it was in the top two.

I think that this issue is common elsewhere as well for instance Playstation proprietary games, Nintendo etc...

I don't think it will ever go away. That's how companies get their hooks in us!
:(
