Thank you for this. I knew the arrangement was bugging me for a reason.

I can't blame technology companies for not having a style. Its just not what they do. Its really Steve who got obsessed with combining style+technology and it worked and it was genius.

The problem is why they have not catched up yet?
I must say thought, HP The computer is personal again had nice looking computers.

How does a convertible like the Yoga 900S look like the Macbook? For example it's got the watchband hinge, and a large (some would say unattractive) bezel around the screen (for touchscreen functionality and tablet mode). As for the Macbook's 1 port - it's my guess that's a cost saving decision..presumably looking for margin. I'm baffled by some of the comments here. I work for Lenovo by the way as a disclaimer. Just seems there are lots of preconceptions here. I guess that's natural but just interested why people are saying 'copy' given the fairly obvious differences in design & functionality.

Externally it's all starting to look the same but the main thing for me is the OS. I can't bring myself to use Windows 8 and later anytime soon, tbh.

Apple comes up with a new model and everyone else copies it and then goes on later how Apple doesn't innovate anymore. If that's true, then why does everyone copy Apple designs in such a rabid manner? ;)
It's to a point that almost everyone is copying Apple. Just go to a Microsoft Store and they replaced the "Microsoft" text, with the Windows-y logo. Everyone really does envy Apple.

Well, adding a port or 2 does not make the device less portable.

Apple's design team should've sat down and thought on how NOT to make a device less useful. Users gain NOTHING from the omission of a port.

So yes, if you need something other than wireless, this device is not for you. No one is forcing anyone to buy it.

But that doesn't make the design decisions any less retarded.

And don't think for a second that money was not a factor in this decision-making.

For crying out loud, they designed and released an ADAPTER with the machine because they KNEW that their design decision was "limited", and CHARGE users for it.

That's just bull&^*t and it's hard to not see this as "on-purpose".

Now, this is not to say the RMB is a bad machine. Nothing Apple does is crap.

But I just hate the "on-purpose" and (seemingly) unecessary omissions for the sake of whatever the frak.
Just because a design and adapter for something doesn't mean the original product is flawed. The Apple pencil comes with an adapter yet I haven't used it once. I plug my pencil into the iPad Pro when I want to charge it. But I get that not everyone will want to charge it that way so the adapter is understandable. As far as the rMB goes i'm just giving you my opinion on what I believe Apple's thinking is. And I'll bet any money new rMBPs come out this year that are more like the MBA in terms of weight so all those who wanted a retina MBA will finally get one it just won't be called that.

They even copied the promotional picture.

If they didn't do stuff like this people wouldn't be so quick to accuse them of copying Apple. And how many gold laptops were there prior to the rMB? You could say the same thing with phones. Now there's a gold anodized aluminum Nexus 6 that was just announced.

"No Apple laptop has Dolby sound yet...,"

Doesn't have IMAX theater viewing either. I'm really steamed about that. Totally. Apple is doomed.

I'm not sure I want a chunk of what I pay Apple in my MacBook going to Dolby for marginally better sound processing.

All current Macs do support Dolby Surround out via HDMI or Optical.

Because according to  adapters are "better" than having ports conveniently incorporated into your computer??

Yup. I'll take my MacBook with less ports for the extreme thinness and lightness it has. It's freaking almost smaller than iPad 1. All the non-techies I know that see it, love it, and several have bought it. Note that these users are happy with Mail+Word+Preview and have no use for USB anyways.

I would take a second USB-C on the right edge though. And it would have been nice if Apple launched the product with TB support in the USB-C, but that's minor. The use case for a MacBook doesn't really need a TB port, the 13" rMBP is there for the power portable use case.

For anything I need power or ports for I use a rMBP which fits that use case. For my work & meeting to meeting laptop use, the rMB is freaking perfect.

Business 101. Copy the leading competitor, improve on the copy in hopes of bringing leading competitors customer base to your side. Apple knows that they don't have to provide the BEST specs because they have a solid customer base. You never give everything, you give just enough to keep everybody coming back.

Exactly. Apple has never had the best specs, but you don't buy an Apple for specs, you buy it for the ecosystem and the whole package. I have a hackintosh + Windows box running at my feet right now with a KVM hooked to it. Which computer am I using?

Is it the i7 4770k with ATI R9 280x? Nope. It's the 2014 rMBP. The rMBP is not quite as quick, but it is flawless at Messages and Continuity. The hackintosh got relegated to FCP X and gaming use.

Seeing how clueless Apple is these days, betting all the money in fashion wearables + cloud-based customer control while trashing the NeXT legacy, I'm happy to see other brands believe there's a market where Apple doesn't think so anymore.

I hate coming back to Linux after these years on OS X, but, at the same time, every new OS X release from 10.7.x to 10.11.x have brought nothing but increased disappointment if you really enjoyed the great progression from 10.2.x to 10.6.x. So maybe coming back to Linux won't be as sad as seeing what more good things we lose in 10.12.x and what new useless toys/bloat it brings.

You'll have to elaborate on NeXT legacy, unless you just mean moving to a unix based OS? And I think a big difference, was between 10.0 and 10.6 there wasn't the push for an OS a year. Slowing down has its advantages. More time to develop, test, and deploy mature features. That said, 10.6 wasn't a flawless upgrade either.

If you have an old OS X Mac, even one running 10.6, give it a shot, and tell me we aren't better off. I run a 2006 MB as a local printer / file server, I'm glad we moved forward.

And you can't reasonably compare Linux and OS X for the average user. Linux doesn't have any distro anywhere near as user friendly as OS X. Hell, continuity and iMessage alone is enough to keep me in an OS X environment 90% of the time. My hackintosh gets neglected because I didn't set up Messages.

Linux still struggles with drag and drop!

It would be nice if Apple got in with the "Hi-Res" audio stuff. I'd like to see Apple support Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA for movies and TV shows on the iTunes Store.

You mean for TV use? There's no reason for that in the Macs, just having it able to be bit-streamed out would be an advantage though.

There is a bandwidth question though, DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD is data heavy and many people are already bandwidth limited. It would be a nice feature for those of us with fast internet though.

I'd imagine though, most people with systems that could maximize TrueHD and DTS-MA, are buying BDs still. I still watch and buy a ton of blurays primarily for the audio, but also for the video quality.

In some places, they do.

Like at the Corporate Store in Cupertino? It's actually kind of amusing to go to any gathering of Apple employees and see how many people have the t-shirts. "I visited the mothership" is a very common one as is the "Designed in California" one.

Wow, they're almost a year behind.
I do hope however that Apple is working on a fantastic successor to the 2015 MacBook (we just need ONE more port!), and 15', pleazz?

Honestly, liking the looks of the LG Gram. Could be a good computer for my mom, she's still running an Arrandale Inspiron.

Unless Apple has something crafty up their bag of tricks with the Pro this year, then I might just decide to upgrade early and pass my 2014 Pro on to her.

I'm calling it right now...once Apple gets rid of the headphone jack in the iPhone 7, in the next year or so, hardly any smartphones will have them.
not necessarily next year but lets say in the next 3 years or so they will

THIS! It shows just how much Apple do set the standard in pretty much all the products they create. iPhone, MacBook, iPad, iMac. Even their advertising. The slew of slightly cheaper, slightly 'less good' copies that other companies churn out is surely a testament to how Apple are still leading the way, despite the naysayers.

Come on .... They're made thin laptops - don't think Apple have patented that yet.

The 900s is the least obvious copy of the 3 but the similarities are still striking. First, they are featuring a gold laptop. Before the rMB when was the last time you saw a laptop in gold, let alone as the featured color for a new release? Look at the profile of the device. Look at the keyboard. Let me guess. There's only so many ways you can make a laptop, right? LOL.

As for the single port, an additional port at full speed using the existing chipset would have required a daughter board. It would have required additional wiring so that it could support charging. Even still, the two ports would not be at full feature parity as the graphics don't have the horsepower to drive multiple 4k monitors. The rMB was designed to be as thin and light as possible, and keeping with Apple's ethos, not pull any odd stunts with what one port could or could not do. It's worth noting that the rMB, released almost a full year before any of these laptops here, is still lighter than any of them. That's due to that unyielding minimalism in its design.

LOL, are you suggesting even smartphone will use a proprietary plug instead?
What a sad world that would be.

This seals it. Waiting for Apple's skylake refresh. Was so close to getting a rMB, however seeing these vendors with 12' laptops that have 2/3 ports has made me seriously reconsider getting a rMB.

Maybe Apple can give us a Retina MacBook Air?

There already is one, it's called the MacBook Pro retina 13"

Why people still want an MBA is beyond me, the pro is faster, has nearly the same battery life, more ports, much better screen and it's actually smaller than a MBA while having the same thinness. Only drawback is its slightly more expensive and weighs a bit more.

yeah it's a nice laptop, but for that money why would anyone choose it instead of a Mac? I mean people only buy Windows laptops because they're cheap right?
If anyone is going to pay that kind of money might as well get the real thing.

Because not everyone wants to run OS X and running "other" on a Mac you have to compromise something or it's a PITA

If Dell can do it with their XPS 13, I don't see why Apple can't with their MBA.

The XPS 13 runs the same class of processor as the MBA, yet has a much higher res display and is quite a bit lighter.
