I think most of the people in this thread already own the X1E or have a comparable laptop. I can't see myself getting the gen2, as the update is only incremental and my laptop is only 7 months old
Since I missed on Gen 1 due to being a fresh owner of a certain MPB at that time, I am looking at Gen 2 right now. The price shock of paying over 5 grand with taxes and apple care wore off after a year, over the week of July 4th I gave my 2017 MBA to my 13 year old niece (totally worth it - she loves it), my XPS 15 9550 to my brother in law, my Mac Pro 5.1 is packed and ready to ship - unfortunately the potential buyer (from this forum) stopped responding when he learned the shipping costs (hey, it is 54 pounds), my GS65 is currently used by my 5 year old to play Minecraft (great machine spec wise, but I just realized I simply don't like it, and a green LED on one key died) - which all combined means one thing : I can buy another 15 inch Windows machine guilt free!

But not right now, the X1 Carbon Gen7 is already on 10% sale, I will wait until the Extreme Gen2 is 30% off, the starting prices are Apple like. Probably two months from now. And it needs the 8 core i9 which is not available yet.

I own the 6th gen with HDR screen. Ask for anything specific and I will try to answer :)
Brilliant thanks ok here it goes.

Do you feel a significant weight reduction and size compared to the X1 extreme?

How is the battery life when the screen is nearly full brightness?

USB c charging or does it have its own proprietary connection?

How's the fan noise on it?

I am looking to replace my dell xps 13 which has developed a fan issue with a X1 carbon as my travel laptop.

Well, x1c is really feather light. While x1e is light in its class, x1c is really significantly lighter.

And yes, you get a 65W usb-c fast charger. That one is compact and light as well.

There was some problems with the fans when I bought the device. They would ramp up for no reason at all. But BIOS updates took care of that, and I've undervolted the laptop as well. Now it is dead silent most of the time.

HDR screen is excellent, best screen on any laptop I have used. But it's 500 nits, so battery will take a hit.

But around 7 hours of browsing and doing casual stuff is more then enough for me.

You can probably get more if you opt for the FHD screen, but in that case I would purchase a 7th gen, since that one has 400 nits of brightness, while 6th gen has 300 nits.

But 2k screen with HDR is a excellent device. 7th gen offers all of that but with 4K screen. And that's a complete overkill for a 14" screen. IMHO of course.

Either way, you can't go wrong with x1c. Way better then XPS. At least to me.

Do you also have a X1e?.

Also I heard that the 7th gen now has s3 sleep option on bios!

If we lower the brightness to half, does it matter whether the screen is 500 nits or lower? How is the battery life on a 500nits screen at half brightness vs. a 250nits screen at full brightness?

Yes I do. I gave x1c to my wife, and she loves it.
I haven't read anything about s3 sleep for the new gen, but if that is true, it's gonna be awesome, especially because we can expect the same thing to be included in x1e 2nd gen.

I'm writing this post now on a Aero 15 OLED. It's not my device, but I've been using it for a few days now, and will have it in my possession until Thursday next week. Next week I will write a small review about this device as well. But in short, excellent screen, now I really want a OLED. But other than the screen and speakers, I find X1E to be a way better device. Especially in build quality and keyboard.

When I used x1c, I usually used it with 60% brightness. Only time I've used full brightness is when I was outdoors, or when I was in a very bright room. Battery on that thing is good, not great, but really good.

I read that the battery life of x1C6 is better than that of X1C7. The new one lasts only about 4 hours. That is not good.

Whats peoples battery life like on your x1e? mine just about lasts 2-3h on full screen brightness and performance set to fulll/max

5 maybe 6? its been a while since I was on the battery all day. Of course I have the brightness down as much as I can, the performance in both the bios and windows is set to better battery.

I do recall playing a game (on battery) and needing it on performance and the battery life was in the 3 hour mark. It was kind of odd to see the battery go down so quick, but I guess when you turn up the performance and push the cpus harder it will do that.

Ok cool so my battery life is nothing out of the ordinary. Yesterday I set the the brightness down to around 70 percent and the battery performance to around the middle and it lasted about 4h and during that use I had the webcam on for video conferences but no sound or mic used as we only needed it so others can see us in the meeting

If I was constantly at it, persistently doing productivity work and some videos in the background, with barely any breaks, I would get around 3 hours from my X1E. That's running balanced power and battery plans and the screen at about 70% brightness.

If I was back and forth to my desk or taking several breaks (or not doing anything graphical) I'd get about 6 hours. It really depends on what you're doing. I find that Lightroom really depletes the battery on all my laptops.

My Aero is the same.

Since my x1e had a motherboard replacement, the machine has been dead silent! more silent then it was on the previous motherboard i had.

It peaks about 28c indoors where i am working and despite that, the fans never kick in only when i am compiling code or rendering something. very impressed with it now.

I just need to go and try a game or two on it!

What did they do to make it dead silent?

When they change a motherboard I'm guessing that also included the processor and fans, otherwise it would be a long and fiddly job.

Processor is embedded in the motherboard.

Tbh I diddnt pay attention to how he did it was I was in my office at the time working while I left the engineer to do his thing

Yeah, while the technician could have pulled the cpu/fans from the original unit, time is money and its a lot fast to pull the entire motherboard out and slap a new one in.
