I could take them ripping away the old front row,
I could take them removing the whooshy sound it made as the beautiful icons rotated on their invisible carousel,
but dear god why would they take my cool transition! I installed Front Row on my old 1GHZ Powerbook JUST for that cool factor of OSX.

Does it still make that (To use an American word) awesome 'bell' like ding when you enter and exit FR? If not I'll be questioning Jobs' sanity... :(

I noticed that too - it only fades to black and then FR appears... I loved the 'fade to desktop' feature... :(

C'mon apple....this needs to come back....

I must also say that the old icons looked better than the new once...they had more of an apple feel to them...now front row is more windows like..:(

Apart from the transition, this is MUCH better.

Honestly, i've got a Macbook here that still runs Tiger, and FR just 'aint as nice. I'm happy with the Leopard version.

I agree. The Leopard version is more usable.

Sure, the transition in Tiger is more impressive, but I just went from a G4 Leopard FR to a Core2 Duo Tiger FR, and the difference is staggering.

I preferred the old Frontrow as well.

So ... is there a way to restore the old version?

Okay, so nobody answered my question...

Luckily I found a way to install the old Frontrow myself, since I still had a backup of my old system, including the application folder and the Tiger library itself.

How to do it:
1) Replace the Front Row application with the old one
2) Replace system/library/CoreServices/Front Row with the old one
3) Voila!
It worked instantly, I didn't even had to restart or log out. :D

4) and if you want to be sure you have the latest Tiger-version of Frontrow, download this http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/28431

I'm so glad that I have the cool transition back. But more importantly... the music keeps playing now, unlike in the new Frontrow.

Perhaps a dumb question - can one just go to the link, download it, and have it work?

OP, I'm with you on this one. I like the old one much better. Too bad were stuck with it...

Is it possible to install the old one from Tiger??? I tried, but I am missing "system/library/CoreServices/Front Row". Is it possible to get it somewhere? Can I do it from the Tiger disc?

I also think new front row is a downgrade. Look like good designers left apple.

Clever. Thank you in advance. I will be trying this one out.

There's always room for improvement in Front Row 2.1.

I have my fingers cross for that... "duhnnnnnnnn" and "whoooosh" sounds. THAT, friends, is the epitome of elegance. ;)

i like the new front row, but at the same time i hate it. i liked how the previous front row had a nice animation of the desktop moving back. the leopard has a boring fade. the browsing is nice, and seems more efficient. the scrolling album art on the left is nice too. but it doesnt seem very mac-ish. more of a PC menu system.

Personally, I really like the new Front Row. The fade to black then FR, is diffrent, but not that big of a deal. I do have to admit something though, I've already had to use Time Machine. Thanks Apple! You saved my businesses website!

Ya I am kind of bummed about the look of this Front Row. In all reality it all works the same, but I definitely liked the look of the spinning icons on the last one.

I'd like a melding of the 2. I like the scrolling pics thing but LOVE the spinning icon/disk/sounds thing. Course for Music, the new front row's album art is non-existant for me. Perhaps cuz we ripped everything from CDs. I wish that was fixable cuz now it's just ugly folder things.

I didn't save my old front row but have the install disks that came with my iMac with Tiger. Think there's a way to do the above method and somehow suck the old front row out of it for install? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I have no clue how to do this level of stuff.

How about some pics :)

It's just the same as the Apple TV. Google for Apple TV images and it's exactly the same.

I like it. This seems more finished to me - although it's hard to say why I think that. The old FR feels like a hacked up beta compared to this. And this fits my SDTV screen better.

Okay, I found a way...

Basically the Frontrow app itself does not need to be replaced. Apparently it is the file in the CoreServices that matters.

To find this file: download the link I have found earlier: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/28431
Mount it, right click on FrontRowUpdate1.3.1.pkg and select "show package content"
Then go to Archive.pax.gz in the contents folder and unarchive. This will show up on your desktop as the folder Archive. Then go into this folder to Archive/System/Library/Coreservices/Front Row. That's the file you need! Copy this to System/library/CoreServices/

Can someone let me know if this works? Maybe it works on my system because some .plist files or preferences have been changed by the installer, which of course does not happen by just copying the file in CoreServices.

Digg the new one! - much refined, more sophisticated interface - previews are great - the new Front Row is one of the best features - thanks to Steve for giving us built-in AppleTV's with Leopard! :D

(now if the darn video's would just play on my TV... :p)

That works but its not without a few problems. Crashes when I try to play a DivX movie. Other things seem to work, however.
