Okay, I found a way...

Basically the Frontrow app itself does not need to be replaced. Apparently it is the file in the CoreServices that matters.

To find this file: download the link I have found earlier: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/28431
Mount it, right click on FrontRowUpdate1.3.1.pkg and select "show package content"
Then go to Archive.pax.gz in the contents folder and unarchive. This will show up on your desktop as the folder Archive. Then go into this folder to Archive/System/Library/Coreservices/Front Row. That's the file you need! Copy this to System/library/CoreServices/

Can someone let me know if this works? Maybe it works on my system because some .plist files or preferences have been changed by the installer, which of course does not happen by just copying the file in CoreServices.

It worked to start FR, but when i went into video folder it popped "problem have occurred" and just hang. After pressing few times on menu it came out of FR. I tried again - the same thing. But music and photos work fine. I didn't try to watch dvd.

My dream - one day someone blends the 2. Swirling whoosh effect with the rest being the new version. Perhaps this actually wouldn't be difficult.

The new Front Row is faster because it uses Leopard's built-in media browser (ala iLife) to navigate through movies, music, and photos rather than AppleScript's to launch the separate applications (iTunes, iPhoto).

Has anyone gotten the screensaver to work yet? It doesn't appear for me.

That make sense. You know what, after I tried the old one and then restored to the new one, after I had error message, I would agree that in most parts the new one works better, but some old good things would be nice to keep.

It is really stupid that music doe not continue to play upon exiting front row. Like I want to sit and stare at album artwork while i listen to a song. seriously, apple. You've made Front Row useless. It's essentially a more limiting iTunes interface.

Yep, this is a huge problem which now makes the application useless for me. While I understand why it now works this way, I think it should be fixed to work like it use to. Even worse is that it stops iTunes from playing when it starts up. It should be as integrated into the OS & iTunes as the original iLife was and not just a separate application.

I am disappointed by all this as I originally thought it was a good thing that it would share the Apple TV UI.

i do like the new interface but i wish t just didn't fade to black when front row is activated. i miss the whole desktop flying to the back of the screen effect. it was a nice apple touch

Personally, I hated the old interface.. it was way too childish looking and trying to hard to be cool, but the new one is very simplistic and elegant.

I had to put up with the childish interface in Tiger, so now you can deal with the elegant interface in Leopard. You can't please all the people all the time, so you do the best you can. Deal with it!

Secondly, all through these forums I keep hearing people say this should have been kept the same and that should have been kept the same... why did they change the way I liked doing this or that. Uh, you are not running Tiger any more... you are running Leopard... it is NOT the same thing... it was not MEANT to be the same thing.. if it was, then there would not be a new version of the OS and simply updates to the old one.

Get it through your heads... THIS IS A NEW VERSION OF THE OPERATING SYTEM!!! If you like Tiger so much, then why the heck did you shell out the money to upgrade. I have listened to these whining complaints since the 26th, and I'm sick of it. Either go back to Tiger or not, but either way, deal with it!

The front row in tiger actually convinced me and my dad to switch. The desktop disappearing in the background was pretty neat. And this is actually taken away from us now? What the hell apple

No Resume

Has anyone noticed that Xvid/Divx videos that you have loaded in your "Movies" folder do not remember the position that you stopped them at?? In the previous version of FR the resume feature was a great.

NOT happy!

Is there ANY way of making the TV Shows display in episode # order?

I've got all 3 seasons of The Office, and they all show up in reverse order, based on the date they were downloaded.

AHHH!!!

No need to shout.

I'm sure I'm with most people here, when they choose to pay money for an upgrade, they'll have something better, if not the same that it replaces?

I can only imaging that Front Row had a complete rewrite to work off updated APIs etc., and I hope the bells and whistles where ommitted only because of the deadline (in the hope that they will be added at a later point release).

It would be a shame if the fade transition was the only option now...

Can you edit the metadata of the files somehow, i.e. in iTunes?

I like the new FrontRow. Yes, I miss the transition between the desktop and FR, but I like the "Apple-TVish" menu structure. Also it is nice to have the program not load the other programs and is more self-contained. I actually did not like it when the music would continue after exiting FR.

I normally only used FR when I connect my MacBook Pro to my TV. Other times, I would just use the programs (iTunes, iPhoto, DVD Player).

Speaking of the DVD player, the changed to the Leopard version are nice! :)

I also noticed when FR plays music, it swaps the album cover during playback. It will start on the right then swap to the left then back to the right. The swapping is neat, but it startled me at first

Not the "Date Added", which it seems is what Front Row organizes videos by.

Lame.. so it won't honor whatever sorting method you've chosen in iTunes?

Anyway, could someone explain how the "Sources" thing works in FrontRow 2? In the original Front Row there's music, videos and photos and a "Shared.." section inside each one. So how does the sources thing work, do you have to go back to the very first menu and choose a different source if you want to browse other shares? Even if you're only browsing, say, music? Also, does it sync content like the Apple TV or just stream?

Oh yeah AND, if you stick an alias in your ~/Movies directory, does it show the name of the alias or the name of the file or folder it points to? One of the things about FR1 that always annoyed me was that it wouldn't use the alias name.

Leopard Front ROW needs upgrade!

Hello all, this is my first post here, and i was really happy to see many people agree with these Leopard FR issues.
Although, i have found some issues that you haven't been encountering apparently but that are also ruining the ''FR experience'' for me.
As said previously:
-The interface, transition and ''WOOSH'' sound, but that is a question of taste.
-The impossibility to continue listen to music while getting into or out of Front Row: THAT IS DAMN ANNOYING!!!
Not said:
-I am one of these crazy music guys who actually spent time associating different pics to different songs from the same album of an artist.
Well, while CoverFlow plays the songs, these pics don't appear and only the Album cover does. But in the TIGER version of FRONT ROW, i had the chance to see the specific pictures of each song.
Now, the LEOPARD version of FR doesn't do it. It only shows the Cover Art of the whole album...That's plain boring!!!
-The Timeline of the playing time of the songs looks plain ugly! It was much better more minimalistic like it used to be.

Well, to make everybody happy, all we need is a way to customize the interface, so the people who like the old ''childish'' interface (me included) can have it their way, and the ''adults'' who want to enjoy their ''product'' can have the ugly (oops, i meant Modern) interface too.

Please someone do something so we can have a choice soon!!!

I have a bunch of movies on an external hard drive. Is there anyway to link it to front row. I don't have enough memory to leave them all in the movie folder and would love to be able to access them with the apple remote, without pulling the files back and forth from one hard drive to the other. Any ideas?

Sure is - open up your Movies folder in your User Home directory, then drag the drive/folder you wish to link to, while holding down CMD+Option. You'll see the cursor turn into an Alias arrow. You should be able to find them in front row now in the movies folder.

I wish Front Row still resumed movies that aren't in iTunes. I have a 500 GB drive with all my dvds and shows on, and I no longer use Front Row because I couldn't resume playback, like I could in tiger front row.

The new frontrow is ok, but yeah I really miss that transition. It's just one of those essentially useless wow factors that can make a person become a switcher.

The sound effect that accompanies the 10.4 Front Row transition causes one of my cats to turn round and look in the direction of the Mac every single time he hears it.

Amuses me no end ...

Cheers

Jim

Strange, I loved it the first time I saw it. After installing a few extra tools (FrontRowTrailer, Flip4Mac, DivX, Perian and XiphQt) I can play anything I want with it, and it shows me HD-trailers.

They only thing still missing is a remote control....

I'm still wondering why so many people complain about every new feature. But on the other hand, I also complained about the new windows and office features....

Thanks pulsewidth. I knew it would be something that easy. Its working great now. I just bought the new OS, it should be here tomorrow. Sounds like people are not very happy with the new front row. I hope I like it, I use it alot.
