Thanks for posting this, I have the exact same laptop as the OP, except I recently upgraded mine to 1.25Gb of RAM. I was on the fence about putting Leopard on it, but after reading this I'm definitely going to do so.

to the OP, rpp3po

seeing as how there there is a good deal of interest in the advantages of upgrading to Leopard on PPC notebooks versus remaining with Tiger, I suggest that the thread title be changed to a more general "Leopard on G4 PowerBooks".

I feel it is important to have a common, easily-identifiable thread for all users considering the upgrade, both for technical support and the general consolidation of the die-hard PPC notebook sub-community.

I think the same could be said of any hardware class, and I agree, some uniform location is needed to keep the threads and reactions from getting unwieldy.

I suggested this over at the site feedback forum... if any of you agree, be sure to say so.

And, definitely, can't wait for the UI to FLY on my 12 incher!

Why don't you make a video using iShowU to let us see how fast safar, etc start on this. Fast is relative to the eye of the beholder.

I thought the translucent menu bar was a toggle option in system preferences? So it's a permanent feature?

rpp3po, can you post a screen shot of the non-translucent menu bar in Leopard?

that sure is great news...
hope to get my hands on a copy of leopard in the next few weeks too...gotta save some money first tho

ricgnzlzcr's Imagination Tells Him To Not Install Leopard Instead Of Empirical Facts

This is definately exciting news. I'm still a bit skeptical about installing this on my 1.25ghz powerbook because I feel that the processor will be taxed so much more while performing the same tasks I do on Tiger. I do want to hear of more G4 reports
So you are going to continue listening to your imagination instead of a physical world report? Good luck with that reasoning.

Why do you even think that logic merits telling anyone? You are haunted by fantasies. Perhaps professional help is warranted?

I will definitely be installing it on my October 2003 1.25GHz PB with 2GB of RAM tomorrow and I am 100% certain it will run faster. There has never been a new OS X version that didn't run significantly faster than the previous version on all Macs. Do you ignore this historical fact as well?

Hmm This thread is exciting! Didnt really consider sticking leopard on my iMac G4 but considering the report here I think i might invest in it... My iMac G4 is 1.25Ghz with 1Gb Ram so it should be pretty nice!

Max Out Your Old Mac's RAM to 2GB Everybody

1GB of ram will be a speed limiting factor. Pull the ram and replace with two 2GB sticks - about $140 for a Lamp Mac kit - for maximum performance.

i just recently decided to stay on the G4 mac's for a while longer. i expected leopard to run ok on G4 mac's. but when they excluded g4's with less than 800MHz i got a bit worried. but with your report it seems i'm fine. that gives my mac's 2 years more lifetime with the newest system.:D

it will be interesting to see if software developers eventually drop PPC support and require "Intel only".

well...it is poised to happen eventually...
and indeed the release of leopard might be the event that makes it happen.
however I hope for all the ppc owners that it won't.

Well, we have only 1 data point so far and it's based on first impressions. So while many of us think the OP's input is highly encouraging, it is by no means conclusive. Time will tell how responsive Leopard is and how much of an overall system-wide speedup it provides. It's one thing to have faster versions of apps that are bundled with the OS, but quite another to have performance improvements in other apps you use every day.

As requested, a screenshot of the non-translucent menu.

Everything Is Faster On Any Old Mac With 2GB Of RAM

Faster means including all applications not just the system. Oh ye of little faith. Of course this excludes you who are unwilling to invest in the ram it takes to max out your ram's limit.

Calm down champ. First, don't be rude. Second, I'm merely saying that I'm waiting for more reports because while I'm very excited at the news so far I know it's not the be all and end all of user experience just yet. It won't hurt for me to evaluate after more users pick up their copies. It's just the way I handle all my decisions and I would respect you if you respected that instead of making me out to be the person who says 1+1=3. Good luck with your installation of leopard Multimedia. I'll definitely hope you post your experience with it to help anyone feeling reluctant to upgrade.

Hmmm....thats nice to hear but how does the 1ghz PPC compared to 2ghz Intel?

it's not "1GHz PPC" that's relevant. It's "1GHz G4". A Core 2 Duo will destroy a G4 at the same clock speed 99% of the time (that last % is things like RC5 that are perfectly suited to Altivec).

So yeah, Leopard should be quick on Intel Macs too.

As I have written earlier in this thread I haven't changed or hacked anything. Probably Leopard adopts automatically to lower spec'ed machines.

As I have also written earlier, performance is already excellent with 768 MB. That is for browsing, iPhoto, and iTunes. For Photoshop et al more is probably better.
