PPC won't sleep either

I have many issues with Leopard, and this is one of them as well. I have Leo on clean install on an internal drive (250 GB) My computer is PPC Dual G5 2.3 Ghz w/4.5 G of RAM.

Mine won't stay asleep as well.

I sometimes have an external for TM connected sometimes not...makes no difference. Sometimes I have open programs when I sleep (itunes, iphoto, entourage, ical, and/or ichat) and sometimes not... makes not difference.

C'mon apple - please address these publicly or privately....what would your board member Al Gore think the electrical usage/environmental abuses of 7-8 hours of a running mac? Seems I read somewhere (slashdot) that 7-8% of all electricity used was from idle computers?

I have to say I am getting a tad cheesed off with my Mac.

Two weeks ago, everything in the garden was rosy until my 30" HD cinema display starting flashing pixels. I booked a slot with a Genius, took it to the store and they confirmed the problem and ordered me a new monitor. As it was a warranty replacement, they had to order one so meanwhile, I took my faulty monitor home to use in the interim. I plugged it back in and ever since, my G5 Quad will not sleep unless I tell it to manually.

My new monitor has since arrived but this has done nothing to rectify the sleep issues. I've trawled through countless forums but to no avail.

Even a friend in the Mac store confirmed he'd heard a few people complain of such sleep problems so come on Apple, if it's a problem, FIX IT .... pretty please?

Just one question, has anyone done a clean install ? I'm having a few KP and slow startups besides this issue so I'm considering going through the pain of reformatting and reinstalling everything. But if anyone has already done that and haven't solved it I might as well save some time and wait for 10.5.2

I did a clean install (on a separate internal hard drive).... twice. I did import all the user info and apps from my Tiger drive too...(and I have many - my apps folder is about 45.25 GB alone) So, some of my issues may be from various apps and/or system preferences.

I have a few other components as well-external isight, Lexar multi-card reader, 4 port USB 1.1 hub and iphone, no name speakers, mitsubishi CRT monitor...

So a clean install is relative for me I guess. But technically I didn't do an archive and install either time - so clean install.

Anyway - I think Leo is problematic for many people ..unfortunately (or fortunately for them) there are others with not a lick of an issue.... and I hate 'em.

;-)

edit: as for your slow startup - I've noticed that if I leave my iphone plugged in (phone either on or off - the booting will turn the iphone on - if it's off) my computer takes much much longer to fully come to a usable state... maybe 5 times longer than normal

Anyway, good luck and let's hope things get a bit more settled.

Leo Is Still Beta!!

I put the computer to sleep last night - unplugged the iphone, closed every program I had open, gave it a few minutes to stop any hidden processes associated with any of the programs I just closed...put it to sleep.

It seemed to be asleep, lights pulsing fans off...all seemed well, I walked away.

This morning? It was on, fans blowing - I switched the monitor on ...THE SCREEN RESOLUTION CHANGED! It changed to 800x600! I usually have it at 1152x870. Also, I couldn't now connect to the internet - I had to reset my wireless router (my girlfriend uses the wireless for her lappy - I'm hardwired in)

As I noted in my first post here, I mentioned that there were other issues I had with Leopard... these are some of them. I've seen these before. I've posted elsewhere (other forums) about these issues... I really am getting tired of talking about it. No one seems to have any solutions - except stupid ones ie: get an intel mac; reload Leo and don't use any 3rd party periph or programs; repair permissions...I just think that folks ought to know about the issues with Leopard before dedicating too much business structure around it.... IT IS NOT READY folks.

Annoying

This is frustrating...

Any one discover any fixes for this?

Surprisingly, there seems to be more people reporting this here than on the apple forums.

I'll put mine to sleep and it'll sleep all night, but if I put it to sleep in the morning when I leave for work it seems to wake up by the time I get to work. (I log into aim and it tells me I'm already logged in).

Jesus christ.

Ok heres my situation. While running Tiger on my MBP 15' 2.4GHz I would close my screen lid and the computer would go to sleep. After updating to Leopard I close my screen lid, it goes to sleep for about 30 seconds and wakes up, WITH THE LID CLOSED!!! I install Tiger on an external and boot from that and close the lid, it sleeps. I install LEOPARD on an external an boot from that and IT SLEEPS! I erase my internal and start from scratch, close the lid in Leopard, it wakes up. Erase it again and install Tiger, close the lid, it sleeps. WTF!!!!

I've been on the phone with Apple care 6 times about this problem, still no luck, and each time I was on hold for about an hour and a half waiting for someone to not even fix my problem. It's so annoying.

After the security update, when I close the lid, it goes to complete sleep! Then after about a minute, it wakes up. KJSADFIHSDHUSJDVNJSADVU I hate this. Everytime I am on the phone with applecare they act like they never heard of this problem before, its really irritating

I have been having the same issues and I think it is Time Machine related.

Strangely enough, a full run through with OnyX restores the ability to sleep with a Time Machine drive connected... but soon disappears.

I finally ditched Time Machine and went to CCC while waiting for Super Duper! to get released for Leopard.

I never used nor will I ever use Time Machine. It's useless. It's only good if you have a huge external hard drive you feel like wasting and I am not gonna spend 5 just to constantly back up my system for no reason. I have Time Machine turned off. = ( ugh this sucks. I feel like just going back to Tiger.

Interesting how certain threads blossom while others fade for no apparent reason on these forums. I started this exact same thread a month or so ago.

But anyway, I'm having the same issue. Quad G5, no time machine, all drives removed from spotlight. The machine has about a 2 minute period where it looks like it's prepping for sleep after you tell it to do so, then the fans start blowing. It'll stay like that until I force shut it down.

This is pretty bad, and I'm using WAY more power than I need to. Scheduled shut downs don't work either, because if there's an AppleTV connected to iTunes, iTunes asks if I really want to close it. Ends up aborting the shut down and staying on all night anyway.

I can't believe this whole issue wasn't addressed in 10.5.1.

Macbook won't sleep

I too am having the same problem. I recently updated my macbook to leopard as well. I took it to the Apple Store genius bar. They first thought it was idisk, which did not help. They did a archive and install last Saturday and it has been working great and going right to sleep, until today. I downloaded the latest Max OS update and it started waking itself immediately.

My macbook will wake itself when closed repeatedly making the "classic sounds" and turning on the apple logo on the top cover. It will follow this process every few minutes. In the past I had been able to manually make it sleep, but am unable to do that now as well.

My question is why do none of the guys at Apple seem to have knowledge that this problem exists?

iMac G5 Running 10.4.11 Won't Sleep Either

My iMac G5 stopped sleeping on its own also & I have not yet upgraded to Leopard. I think it has something to do with the software update sent out in December. I also have a Mac Mini & iBook running the same OS version but they are sleeping okay. It's just the iMac that has the problem.

I have done both clean install and archive installs multiple times now. I have been to the genius bar six times and no one seems to know of this problem with leopard. I bought refurbished macbook and it is now being replaced by Apple so I am doing without for a while and it stinks. I would have bought new if I had known it had to be mailed away.

I do use time machine and absolutely love it. I use a portable external hard drive I bought for very little and find it not to be obtrusive at all. You always use a hard drive to back up so what's the big deal? I also use superduper which is awesome, but doesn't allow you to go back to something if you've overwritten it. I love being able to go back and retrieve things I could never before. But, at the time my computer stopped sleeping I was not using time machine and it was off.

Since the sleeping problem. I have had several OS crashes as well. When my new computer arrives, I will start back with Tiger and add apps one at time to see which ones don't work. I have confirmed that Microsoft office prior to the 08 version does not work with Leopard and can be causing these problems. Just an FYI.

I have an MBP 15" from March 2006 now with Leopard 10.5.1
Since I updated to 10.5.1 my MBP will not sleep properly.

Found an widget Deep Sleep which when used seam to keep the MBP in sleep mode.

But I do not like to use widgets, especial not for entering sleep when I leave the MBP for a while.

I am NOT using time machine nor I have any external devices connected...

I given Apple feedback on this, but I have no higher hopes as I since I got my MBP reported many other issues that never been addressed like the time zone issue for Venezuela...I had most part of the inside replaced, but like the curving of the lid (its now 4 mm at each corner) and the problem with the fan's Apple never accepted.

In fact when I got my MBP it was my move to MAC from Windows after been with MS since day one.
But honetly I love the OS and the MBP, but with al the issues I had I am thinkng of going back to the MS world :(

does it sleep if you select sleep from the apple menu?

I know that my imac goes to sleep that way but will not go to sleep by itself based on my settings in the energy saver. It seems safari is to blame in my case. If safari is running the computer will only go to sleep if i manually select sleep in the apple menu but if its not running then the energy saver settings will kick in.

open the console log, and see if something keeps it awake. when i upgraded to leo and used the migration assistant, i noticed an old app i never used kept coming up in the log. i deleted that app and all is well again.

I have a very similar situation to you. I have a late 2006 white Intel iMac. It came with Tiger on it. For a long time, it would not sleep on its own. Then, one day after several updates came in (I can't remember which ones, but one of them was also a firmware update), sleep worked perfectly.

Then, I upgraded to Leopard. I did a complete erase and install. No sleep on it's own. Then, for kicks, I did an erase and install of Tiger (my disc has 10.4.7 on it). After autoupdate brought it up to 10.4.11, sleep works perfectly. Erase and install Leopard, no sleep.

This is annoying.

Since my last post Apple has replaced my macbook with a new one. I am in a 160GB leopard machine. I was in a 80GB tiger machine. So far, I have not had any problems with sleep since the replacement. I am now using time machine and all the software that was on my old machine. I have not had the machine for a long time, so problems could still arise, but as of right now all is well.

Was it replaced due to the sleep issue?

Yes, if I use the power button or the apple menu and select sleep then "he" enters sleep mode, but I have seen "he" wakes up by "him" self a few times.

it could be Safari, Firefox or one of the messenger applications I have (iChat. MSN and Yahoo) running as when on Tiger I left them running and "he" entered sleep mode.

I will try closing all and then see if "he" enters sleep - if then I will try with one by one running.
