I think this definitely may affect the third-party perception of the launch and the device.

There's a definite marketing strategy in fabricating scarcity.

People want what they can't have or what's hard to get, and it keeps you in the news cycle.

The news cycle about this iPad will be very short if there are no shortages.

OP, you spelled Shiny wrong.

That not withstanding. I would wait in line for an iPhone I think, but not on day one. Not for an iPad either. The only Apple store available to me here in Ottawa Canada is in a mall, and it's not a very big store. Parking cost for the mall is INSANE, chances are I would have to pay $30.00 + just for the time I would be waiting and that is for aprx 2-3 hours.

I decided on a pre-order. Since I work during the day, I will not be home to receive it as per usual LOL! So in a way I am still leaving the house to get it.

The issue is that for me to wait in line and chat with folks, would require me to take a day off to do so. Also, cost me more than I earn in a day to do it! haha!

If Apple store in Canada guarenteed an item, that would be different, I would entertain the idea of going there to wait a SHORT while to pick up my item.

Cheers to all of you who are going live though!

I couldn't get an iPad 2 so I went with iPad 1, planning to buy the iPad 3/'New iPad'. I'm tickled that the pre-ordering went well and can do without all of the 'excitement' that surrounded iPad 2. Counting down the days till mine arrives.

Waiting in line is cool,

Except these days some girl with a new Samsung is likely to walk by and stir up a bunch of envy. :(

Have never once waited in line for a gadget. A co-worker and I were prepared to go wait in line for this iPad release IF they didn't do a pre-order, but I was even having second thoughts about doing that.

I guess I'm getting older or something, but I'm too tired to go freeze my ass off all night to wait for something I could just have delivered right to my desk at work. I can't believe that people purposefully forego the pre-order so that they can go stand in line and wait for it, just to get it on the exact same day as everyone else.

And then there's the risk that you won't get one at all. If I stood in line all night instead of pre-ordering and didn't get an iPad, at that point I'm probably looking at a 4 to 6 week ship time after I drag my sorry self back home and order online.
