No one is being "tricked" into anything. To be "tricked," you have to not know what you're getting into.
On the contrary, AT&T is making it
very clear what the pricing is going to be. And you can take it or leave it.
If AT&T has said "Oh sure, we're not changing a thing" and THEN all of the iPhone 3G users got their first bill showing the increases, then I would say people were indeed tricked.
To me, this seems quite fair: the original iPhone was hella expensive but at least the data plan was at least 33% cheaper than other phones of the same class. Now: cheap phone, but no more breaks on the data plans.
Also bear in mind that a year ago, the smartphone data plan for 3G was $40, not $30. Sometime between mid 2007 and today, AT&T cut the price by $10 for
every smartphone user.
Here's my take: people on this forum who are moaning about the price feel
entitled to both a cheap phone and cheap data. Sorry, you can't have both. People bitched and moaned about the expensive hardware price tag and up front cost, so that feedback was taken in stride and now this model was put forth. Now people are bitching and moaning about this. Hopefully AT&T will learn what Apple has known all along: there's a vocal cadre within the Cult of Mac who only
think they know better.
I could go on with the same arguments I put out there in other forums, relating to handset subsidization and data costs. But no matter how much one puts the facts out there, people are still going to bitch: everyone expects their phones to be free, and their data to be cheap, even though, believe it or not, making cell phones AND building data networks costs some coin.
If the pricing offends you, then don't pay it. Stay with your original iPhone and pay the lower price. Or, go buy some other smartphone and feel smug that you stuck it to Steve, even though the data pricing will end up costing you
exactly the same amount.
Me? I look forward to people "boycotting" the 11th, so I can get in and get out with my 3G goodness.
