I really wish all the crying poor people just didn't get an iPhone.

Agreed! I couldn't care less how much the phone costs. If you can't afford it or think you are being thrown into some sort of huge scam, DON'T BUY ONE!!! I'm just tired of people complaining about this whole deal. I feel so bad for you. I'm playing the world's smallest violin just for you. NOT!!!

No one is being "tricked" into anything. To be "tricked," you have to not know what you're getting into.

On the contrary, AT&T is making it very clear what the pricing is going to be. And you can take it or leave it.

If AT&T has said "Oh sure, we're not changing a thing" and THEN all of the iPhone 3G users got their first bill showing the increases, then I would say people were indeed tricked.

To me, this seems quite fair: the original iPhone was hella expensive but at least the data plan was at least 33% cheaper than other phones of the same class. Now: cheap phone, but no more breaks on the data plans.

Also bear in mind that a year ago, the smartphone data plan for 3G was $40, not $30. Sometime between mid 2007 and today, AT&T cut the price by $10 for every smartphone user.

Here's my take: people on this forum who are moaning about the price feel entitled to both a cheap phone and cheap data. Sorry, you can't have both. People bitched and moaned about the expensive hardware price tag and up front cost, so that feedback was taken in stride and now this model was put forth. Now people are bitching and moaning about this. Hopefully AT&T will learn what Apple has known all along: there's a vocal cadre within the Cult of Mac who only think they know better.

I could go on with the same arguments I put out there in other forums, relating to handset subsidization and data costs. But no matter how much one puts the facts out there, people are still going to bitch: everyone expects their phones to be free, and their data to be cheap, even though, believe it or not, making cell phones AND building data networks costs some coin.

If the pricing offends you, then don't pay it. Stay with your original iPhone and pay the lower price. Or, go buy some other smartphone and feel smug that you stuck it to Steve, even though the data pricing will end up costing you exactly the same amount.

Me? I look forward to people "boycotting" the 11th, so I can get in and get out with my 3G goodness. :)

Ok, I understand paying the extra 10 dollars for 3g data.... But why is AT&T taking away our included 200 text messages??? Why are we having to pay an aditional $5 for that??? That has nothing to do with 3g!!! Can someone post a high level contact information for AT&T and Apple so we ALL can voice our concerns!!! The only way they will listen is if we All act as one!!! I really feel tricked by Steve Jobs speech... We are not dumb people... this is not cheaper but rather more expensive iphone!!! The iphone was $400 + $20 per month for data which included 200 text msg which = $880 over 24 months. The new 3g iphone cost $200 + $30 for data + $5 for text per month which = $1040 Now ask yourself.... Which phone is actulay cheaper???? It's a no brainer $1040 for the 3g.... $880 for the original!!! We are all victims of false advertizing!!! Once someone post the contact info... please flood them with our demands of a truley cheaper iphone as we were promised!!!!!!!

Don't forget to include how many have to pay $399 for the phone still (not half price like he said) + $30 + $5 = $1240, so it's really $360 more than it was before. So much for it being affordable for everyone.

Yes, I know Apple has nothing to do with the ATT plan for the most part, but he kept saying $199, over and over, big slides with the number, no asterisk to indication that wasn't their set price, but some subsidized price with qualification from most carriers.

The "he" you're talking about was just talking about the IPHONE jeez what is with people... he was making a keynote about the iPhone not the pricing plans. He was saying 199 because thats how much an 8GB is going to cost.

Yep, he's right, the iPhone is $199.

Then, if you are not eligible for subsidy, it's $199 + $200 (to get out of your old contract).

So, Steve was telling the truth!

Thanks, AT&T, you are soooo kind....

Thank you karris... maybe now people can realize that Steve Jobs works for APPLE not AT&T

You all don't understand ... Jobs was obligated to speak in detail at the keynote about all the pricing plans applicable to the iPhone and AT&T. Never mind that there are 22 (?) countries selling the 3G with multiple available plans in each one.

Steve: "well ... in the U.S. you are actually are going to pay less for the 3G up through Month 21 of your contract, depending on whether you get no text plan, a 200 text plan, or an unlimited text plan. Now let me spend the next twenty minutes detailing how much you will save or spend extra for the 3G on the AT&T Family Plan, which of course depends on the number of lines, the number of iPhones, the text plan purchased, blah blah blah. After that I will spend the next hour or so explaining how the multiple educational and corporate discounts affect how much you will be paying for the iPhone plans, blah blah blah. After a short break, I will continue the keynote by starting in on the UK iPhone plans ... "

No thanks. I will be buying my new 3g iPhone at 8AM on July 11. I am a little disappointed in AT&T but it's not like they are going to change their rates just cause some people don't like it. Sorry, but I would rather have an iPhone than sit here and whine about how much it will cost. Apple gadgets are a luxury and if you can't afford it, then I am truly sorry but I will be plenty happy with my new iPhone.

Actually, I do think that att should be called out on this. I really never liked the idea of the iPhone 3g being subsidized because it feels like att is pulling a bait and switch on its customers. I find it to be sneaky. :(

I purchased an 8gb iPhone when it came out and had no problem spending 600 bucks for the phone + 20 bucks more/month for unlimited data and 200 sms. Heck, when Stevo announced that the 3g iphone would be 200 bucks, I though that it was too cheap. My wife wanted to get it as soon as it would become available, but now refuses to buy it because she found out that in reality, she has to pay 15 bucks more/month to have a new iPhone. The funny thing is that she doesn't even care about the price, nor does she use sms. The thing that ticked her off is that it feels like a stunt that a cheap car salesman would try to pull.

They should've just not discontinued the 1st gen iPhone, that way there could be options.
</rant>

<ducks for cover>
:p

It's NOT A CHEAP STUNT. Instead of a re-branded Media.net plan, AT&T is forcing iPhone users to get the regular smartphone plan. Which is perfectly reasonable since if the iPhone is a smartphone, it should be accounted for as such. Besides, DSL costs more than dial-up. Why do you find it so unreasonable to be paying more now for the data plan?

Dont forget the $18.00 "upgrade" charge.

Makes you want to just get the "cheaper" 3G iPhone that Apple is touting, and not get that "expensive" ATT service. See? It IS cheaper.

Dont blame Apple.

Where do I start....
1) If they said unilimited data & 200 text was $15, does that make it better? since you complain that you have no problem with the $10 faster speed cost.
2)Original iPhone at launch was $599, there for this will actually make the iPhone v1 more expensive. (before rebate or price drop). So its cheaper then what the original people expected to pay, plus GPS & faster speed. Geeez Apple you suck.

how about you all "protest" by not buying it and not complaining about this all the time...

it is a smartphone being sold on a smartphone package its not a kiddie phone!

the bundled 200 text messages was useless before
anyone who text messages even a little bit knows that 200 texts is nothing
all the bundled texts did was lead you to believe you still had some left but you actually went over and got nailed with charges

if you text enough to be upset about not having 200 texts, you should have had a larger number to begin with

1500 and unlimited are still the same price

I like this post best, highly accurate and to the point, if you can't understand scaredpoets post then you'll never understand.

I think it is funny how many people have been duped by what steve said during the keynote... he said "We're making the iPhone more affordable"

He didn't say it was cheaper. There is a lower cost barrier to ownership for people that want the phone. At&t will make more over the course of the required 2 yr contract, but the phone itself IS more affordable. There are many people who can't justify spending $400 or more on a device and can more easily swing the monthly costs of the contract, even though they pay more over the long run.

People in the US especially live with the mentality of having what they want now and paying for it later. The new strategy that Apple and At&t are employing plays directly to that desire for instant gratification. They'll walk out of the store with the shiny new object of their desire for less money out of their pocket and will worry about dealing with the monthly costs of ownership later.

I think the problem is that iPhone users got such a great deal in the beginning. We are now used to being treated differently. Not only did many of us take advantage of this (unlocking and the like) but now that we are no longer getting treated differently we feel we are getting cheated. If the plans were still different and worse, I could understand the complaints. However, these are normal plans for AT&T. This is what we should have gotten last year. I understand people are outraged by the misinformation from Jobs, but that's how it works. Make your product look good and people will buy it. Besides, if you want to go into specifics, Apple did make the iPhone cheaper, and the rate plans were raised to normal rates by AT&T. We don't need hundreds of posts on this forum all complaining about the same thing. I understand, you don't like the new plans you want cheaper plans. Yeah, it's a bit more than you or I would like, but that is what it is, and it's not going to change. Americans think that if they argue about something long enough, the whole world will crumble to their knees in response (yes I am American too). Get over it, no more LET's ALL PROTEST posts. It isn't going to work (and if it does I will be very impressed), and it is just annoying at this point.

Just move on, if you really want to protest, don't buy the new iPhone. In fact shut yourself up in your house, close the blinds and just stay there and don't buy anything because everything costs a lot of money these days and I think we should protest that too.
