I have a feeling the bad screen batches all have a similar serial number. Maybe I'm wrong, but it can't hurt to find a pattern. If you guys could post the following, we can hopefully find a pattern with the bad screens:

Serial Prefix: 9C73679XXXX
Week: 36 (The number after C7 in the serial.)
Version: 3A101a (Reported in Settings>General>About>Version)
Negative Screen: Yes
Location Purchased: Apple Store

Just curious how you know that the number after C7 indicates the week it was produce.

If you are correct, mine is a week 37 and 3A100a. I think my screen is fine. I do not have anything to compare it to though.

That's how it is for all serial numbers on every product Apple sells. So my iPod was made last week (36) and yours was made this week (37).

It's interesting your version is 100a and not 101a. Hopefully something stupid like that will reveal a difference in screens or manufacturers.

From what I have read on all the forums it seems to be a problem with the Apple store shipment.

3a100a seems to be the one that has good screens. Keep um coming guys. This is good info to know! Wish you guys would say what stores you bought it at instead of just the serial numbers.

My iPod Touch pre-order is being prepared for shippment, so no problems for me yet. However my wife bought hers at a Best Buy this morning, and although light scenes look great she has the same negative/shimmering black problem others have reported. Poor Darth Vader looks like a shiny dark blob. Only seems to be an issue with very very dark tones, otherwise image quality is great, sound quality is great and responsiveness of the device is top notch. Hopefully if Apple does identify a bad batch they'll make it right.

Negative Screen: Yes
Location Purchased: Best Buy (16g model)

Guess that's another in the 101a camp with the problem.

Mine has a negative screen. Not horrible, but not great either. I definitely need to be cognizant of viewing angle to minimize the effect.

I know my MacBook doesn't have the most awesome of screens, but its definitely better than my Touch screen.

First, I've got to give a shout out to cavemonkey50 for this great idea and way to organize it.

I've organized the results from above in a summary:

name store week number quality
cavemonkey50----Apple---36--------101------bad
buffalo--------------------37--------100------good
dmize---------------------37--------100------good
telf22------------apple----36--------___------bad
EnTg888---------Apple----37--------101------bad
bushman1-----------------37--------___------bad
teerexx52--------Apple----37--------100------good
sprucegoose-----BestBuy--37--------101------bad
madmaxmedia----BestBuy--37-------- ___-----bad
WILLDOGS-------Apple-----37--------100-------good
graln1k----------BestBuy--37--------101------bad
gloss----------------------37-------100-------bad
DocVT----------BestBuy---36-------100-------good
dragonguy83----Apple-----36-------100--------bad? (just a little?)

It appears that week number and store have little to do with this (althogh of course we have too few samples).

We need to know if it was 100a or 101a from telf22, bushman1, and madmaxmedia...

To summarize the rest:

101a- 4 models- all bad
100a- 6 models- 5 good, one bad, one a little bad?

Well, we are far from conclusive, but there appears to be a pattern emerging, keep sending in numbers and quality (and store and week just to be sure)!
