Any bets that in 5 years the bean counters will decide they aren't making enough money by just selling the hardware, so they'll drop the bomb of a monthly subscription service to utilize the phone integration feature?

That is a bet I know I would not win. :)

The Level Lock lists for $250, and the new Level Lock+ at $330. It appears the main difference is the updated internals to add Home Key support etc, for an $80 price premium.

Going by that it would seem if/when they come out with an updated version of the Level Bolt (Level Bolt+?) it will likely cost around $280. Probably a little more than I am willing to spend, but if might be a good Christmas/Birthday wish list for my family who always complains they don't know what to get me.

I also use double cylinder deadbolts with a key on both sides, so I have no interest in the Level Lock+.

*stands by door for 15 minutes as the phone is in the middle of an iOS upgrade*

Or ... *stands by door forever as my phone is lost / stolen*

Or ... phone is totally dead as the power reserve was already used for express transit to get home.

Sure, I could also lose my key I suppose. I'm just not yet convinced that a keyless smart lock is ... smart. Maybe I'm not young enough for this tech :)
How often do you upgrade iOS on your drive home ?

In the past 10 years I have lost my phone 1 time. I have forgotten my keys about 25 times / had my jacket taken / stole.

As I remember it after iPhone turnes off you have 24 hours to open via NFC ( car/ house.
And I will bet one of your neighbors have a charger :)

But if you have this lock, you can basically open it with a paper clip… it is the most simple key :(

All that really means is you don't fully understand it.

Please kindly do elaborate how I don’t fully understand it when I specifically said I want one [physical key] as a backup. I’m genuinely curious what I’m missing.

Sold! I've just ordered one and when I have tried it out expect to install this in all of our exterior doors.

I wish I had known about this when the 'soft launch' had started, it would have made it worthwhile to drive to our closest Apple Store to pick one up. As it turns out, delivery is now projected for first week in December. They must be experiencing a reasonably strong demand for this, or have limited products available. Either way, I'm anxious to get this and try it out.
Are you donating it to LockPickingLawyer for testing?

thats more expensive than an apple watch se. crazy. expect apple to come with their own products soon if they can charge like this.

It means you don't understand why a key backup is not remotely necessary, and is nothing but a vulnerability.

What do you mean? I have a Level Touch currently (basically the Level+ but without HomeKey), and my unit failed to alert me that the battery was low. I come home, and the lock doesn't automatically open. Luckily, I always carry the key on me along with my car key, so I was easily able to get in. I probably could have entered the front door without a key as that battery was still good, but the point is...doesn't hurt to have a physical non-electronic backup!
1. Your Level Touch is crap then, because other products don't fail to alert.
2. Other products also have other backup methods that you're not even aware of. No key is required.

It looks like a regular lock, that’s neat not letting people know it’s a smart lock, since those smart ones people would mess with it sometimes.

There's no such thing as a perfect smart lock (or anything). Level's locks have shortcomings, as do ANY of the other competitors. Overall, I am extremely satisfied and I just installed twi Level Lock+ today and they are working great so far.

I'll have to research what other backup methods there are on other smart locks, sounds interesting. I would assume none are as easy as physical keys, given that the evolution of keys were specifically created for every day access whereas more obscure backup methods likely require proprietary tools, small holes, etc. Pros and cons to each way.

Overall, while Level Touch was not perfect, it was good enough to get me to buy the Lock+ to get HomeKey.

I think having a built in fingerprint scanner would jack the price up even more. And if it supports Apple Watch over the lock like how you can use it now with Apple Pay, then that get around having to take your iPhone out.

Edit: sorry I just misread your post and saw that you already have one. How much did yours cost?
I think it was around $200-250.

For those concerned about the lock and being easily picked and don't want a key, couldn't you just put some crazy glue or something in the tumbler if you're concerned? Yes, you may ruin the tumbler, but does it matter? Does that make in "unpickable", I don't know. But certainly would make it more difficult for someone to try and gain access.

Or, wondering if there are blank numbers that can be inserted?

They offer an option where it just replaces the bolt portion of your existing lock. It's simply called the Level Bolt. Could even use it in apartments. No need to get new keys or handles.

Unfortunately I don't believe it supports the new "apple key". Someone else posted hopefully they will release the Level Bolt"+" soon.

So you have to pull out your phone and bring it up near the door like a key? What’s the point of this product?
