I am a bit confused about this cable situation. Doesn't the monitor already come with some cables? Ordered mine but has not arrived yet. In order to drive this 4K monitor at 60Hz using MBP 2017 13" or 15", what cable do I need actually?

For the issues some of you experience, is it the monitor's problem, Apple's hardware problem and/or Mac OS problem? Does the monitor work well on a non-Apple desktop computer running Linux or Windows?

The monitor should come with a cable. I bought min from B&H site and the box didn't have the cable even though their own website says it does. Its taking them a 1+ week to send me one. I had to rig up a HDMI to USB-C connection to get my MBP 2017 going.

Apple own cable (charge and sync) apparently doesn't have what it takes to support video. Other cheaper cables do. WTF damn Apple!

Yes, it is confusing and frustrating..

So it is supposed to come with a cable that will work? As I recall, only a DisplayPort cable will work. Not sure...

my friend got a box and it did have an LG USB-C cable and it works.. Check out youtube reviews. It should display video and charge too..
I actually like it.. I takes 3-4 days to get used to it though. Its a beast.

My monitor has arrived. When I opened the box, I found three cables: power cord, displayport cable and hdmi cable. TheRS-232C Gender and USB C-C cable are missing. According to the manual, it states that these two cables are not included in all countries. How about in the USA and Canada? Do you have these two cables?

New computer has not arrived. I know that the Macbook Pro 2010 17" does not support 4K. If I want to try it out, what kind of cable or adapter will I need? The DisplayPort cable have large connector at both ends. My MBP has a mini-displayport I believe.

ask the vendor (whoever you bought it from) to send you the missing USB-C cable. Also file an LG support ticket for them to send you one. I am waiting for both. LG takes 2-3 weeks. Vendor's arrives tomorrow. I have a 13in 2017 with touch bar which supports up to 30HZ so until I get the USB-C I have to connect to the "associate" HDMI port that handles 30HZ. We'll see how the USB-C functions. So far so good. One of the USB's is fast charge. The other USB doesn't do anything (synch iPhone or charge it) so WTH?! I was overwhelmed with the size and questioned my purchase. It took me three days to like it so now I want to work from home everyday.

I asked LG but the guy said that in Canada, they are sold separately. I don’t believe in him.

Looks like various cables have various issues. Could anybody please recommend cables for the following computers to drive the monitor at 4K@60Hz?

1. MacBook Pro 2017 model.
2. DIY PC with Nvidia GTX 1070ti/1080/1080ti GPU (haven't bought the card yet)
3. MBP 2010 17" (I know this computer does not support 4K monitor but it is nice if I could still use it with this monitor. The computer has a mini-displayport which the included cable does not fit.)

Asked LG again. They said that they do not provide the USB-C cable in Canada. They also do not sell it nor recommend any. Know which one will work?

I am using this right now.. Works well. It carries video and charges too. Well, it looks like it is charging the 2017 13 in MBP with touch bar, but I see the charge dropping like a rock.

One strange thing happened, both USB cables started to charge and sync when I stopped using the HDMI cable and switched to USB-C. Its almost as if HDMI was pulling a lot of power out of the monitor. WTH? Why can't LG tech know that?

Thanks. What parameters make this cable works while others fail? Transfer speed?

I want to get one in rose gold, gold or silver.

not an expert, but this one delivers 10Gbps and 100 W and the cable is twice as thick as the Apple counterpart.

I have been using this monitor for about a week and can't seem to accomplish two things:

1. 60Hz refresh on any HDMI port with either supplied cable or brand new cable bought from Amazon indicating support for 4K UHD and 60Hz. (Tried on two computers: Macbook Pro native HDMI port and on Macbook via a Satechi adapter)

2. USB-C display + charging a 12" Macbook 2016. Have tried supplied USB-C cable as well as 4 different cables bought at Amazon indicating support for latest USB-C and USB 3.1. Tried 10Gbps and 20Gbps with some chip in them for PD (power delivery) (Macbook sees 7w power and no charging - about Mac -> System Report -> Power -> scroll down)

What has worked is mini displayport to displayport, but that is only on Macbook Pro as the little Macbook does not have such port.

Anybody out there having better luck? Ideally prefer USBC as it is a clean single cable for Macbook and get to use the USB ports on the monitor, but at this point I would settle for just HDMI, but at 60Hz

Thank you much

Does your monitor and your friend's work well? I am returning it for a refund as LG also cannot figure out what is wrong with it. LG Canada does not provide any info on the USB-C cable nor sell it. Complained to LG USA and they pointed me to LG Canada.

Have you updated the firmware? Somewhere I read that to update the firmware of this monitor, one has to use the USB-C cable that came with the monitor as most other cables won't work.

I am trying to decide whether or not to give this model another chance or just buy something else. Any suggestion?

Ok.
Im using MacBook 12 and LG 43UD79-B over USB-C cable. And... Its WORKED!
Im use Belkin cable F2CU030bt1M-BLK 8830bt22606 Rev. F00
http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F2CU030/

The monitor gives only 7 watts (usb-c port in monitor only 1,5A 5V), but that's enough to charge the MacBook 12. It's just that it's charging a little slower.
Monitor is defined as LG Ultra HD 30,5' (1920x1080) but it is possible to scale 4K.
But for some reason it only works with a frequency of 30Hz... While it suits me)
So, through this cable, sound works.
And ethernet which is connected to the monitor usb via a usb-ethernet adapter.
Everything works through one usb-c cable!

P.S.

Update. Fonts not as clear as on Retina iMac display, but I experimented with turning off font smoothing and it does appear to help with the look of the text on the LG display.

This is a BGR order pixel display. OSX does not yet support font smoothing on this pixel element order. I found just turning smoothing off to be most effective, even on windows and linux

I just found that LG has come up with a 43 inch 4K monitor and wow, Im blown away!

This is what I was actually waiting for.
Sod, did any of you guys got it and tested with your MacBook pro return 2017 with USB-C ?

here is the details,

https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-LED-lit-Monitor-43UD79-B/dp/B0711MP768/

  • 43- inch UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) IPS monitor
  • HDCP 2.2 compatible
  • USB Type C connectivity
  • 4x HDMI input
  • On screen control with screen split
I have the the LG 43ud79-B and while using the apple thunderbolt 3 USB-C cord, the system reports 7 watts of power from the monitor. This is not nearly enough to power my 2018 MBP 13in. However, you can use both the display cord and the original charger at the same time.
