I hate pretty much everything about my 2019 LG’s “apps.” Interface is awful, remote makes me want to smash it. Much happier just relying on Apple TV hooked up to it.

Looking at a 2019 LG myself, thought the interface was nigh on same as the 2020 version? Thought they were both the same version?

I think the 2020 adds a "stop ****ing with my picture" button to take it out of soap opera mode. The 2019 requires you to reenter the byzantine menus over and over to shut it off for every "source," where a source is not just a port, but a picture format (frame rate/resolution/HDR mode). So it took me a week or so to beat that "enhancement mode" garbage out of it.

The remote is an air remote, so just moving it in the air moves a cursor around the screen and gets in your way.

Every few weeks it insists on popping up a "time to update your set!" alert that won't go away fast enough, even if you've shut off "Smart" features. Best thing to do is just to take away its internet connection.

It's interesting how different people have different experiences and feelings about products. I find the LG remote with the "air cursor" as you call it infinitely better and more accurate than the crappy Apple TV remote. The horizontal scroller of apps is also very intuitive and many of the apps themselves are better on LG too. The BBC iPlayer app on LG WebOS is so much more polished than the AppleTV version. The latter doesn't even have a TV schedule.

LG's WebOS is by far the best TV operating system I've used and the remote is great.

But you hate it.

We're all different!

I use a MX-950 (Universal Remote) to control everything. Far easier. Just because I move the LG remote on the table doesn't mean I want a cursor to pop up. And holding my arm out to do stuff sucks (so when i *have* to use the LG remote to do something, I use its cursor buttons instead, but using them is a pain because if your arm moves the damned cursor moves anyway).

Definitely, I’ve never used it, but everyone has different opinions.

I thought LG had lost iPlayer at the moment (in U.K.)

How is the magic remote with the Apple TV+ app?

Does the LG Apple TV+ app just have aTV+ and iTunes movies, not the other integrated catchup services in it?

Thanks

I fail to see how Dolby Atmos sound coming out of a TV will work.

if you want 7.4.2 sound, you’ll need more than the 1 or 2 speakers on a TV
TVs have HDMI port labelled ARC/eARC. TV's internal audio is routed to this port, into audio devices like soundbar or receivers.

My 2018 LG tv is not supported. I have to connect my iMac or MacBook to the tv if I want to watch some tv. I wish to buy Apple TV, but I am waiting for newer model tbh. This one is like 3 years old, so buying old hardware is pointless.
You are not missing too much. While TV app for webOS is pretty decent and usable in a pinch, I find it to be too slow (like most webOS apps). Lack of chapter stops and 10/15 second rewind/forward also makes it frustrating to use in practice.

that was another issue we had installing our LG tv. We use a marantz amp with hdmi switching, and just as a backup we wanted the option to use webos apps as a video/audio source. But theater installers like to avoid ARC because it gets flakey, so instead we routed an optical cable back, etc. etc. Took like an hour to get the LG set to change its settings to support what we wanted in all video refresh rates and modes. Amazing how complicated they've made these things.

I have a 2019 B9 and a 2017 B7. I honestly can’t tell a difference between the two TVs. I think its ridiculous that I can run the Apple TV app on my b9 but can’t on my b7. This is just a ploy to force people to upgrade. So annoying.
Just get an appletv and be happy. No reason to upgrade your tv over 2 Apple apps they are putting on them. I personally hate using my tvs apps. i also don’t get on screen control from my marantz if it’s playing tv audio.

Sony said the Apple TV+ app is “coming” who knows when. They have AirPlay 2 support now, but this won’t allow 4K iTunes with DV HDR will it?

I don’t want to buy a 4K Apple TV as pointless for me, as only want to watch iTunes movie content, so would be more cost.

So LG at the moment (in U.K. at least) are only ones that have Apple TV+ app and AirPlay 2 and DV which is what I want.

Pity as maybe would have chose a Sony TV, asked and the reply back was “With reference to your enquiry, please note that we do not yet have information regarding the future availability of Apple TV+ App”.....great.

LG as always. They promise updates that either never arrive or when they do, only for a small group of products. Basically you just commit to buying the TV with the features it has at day of sale and count on nothing more. If you get more, then count yourself lucky. I was about to jump on the new CX 2020 until I saw they don't fully support HDMI2.1 48GBPS. eARC has issues and missing full 2-way support. App features missing or apps missing with the promise of coming later. PASS. C11 2021 I guess it is!

Does the Apple TV+ app on LG just have the aTV+ and iTunes content not like on the actual Apple TV where it integrates iPlayer, ITV hub etc for catchup services?

I only really use my Apple TV 4th Gen for aTV+ and iTunes so don’t want to upgrade to a Apple TV 4K really

Its just for iTunes TV and film purchases - you can get the rest anyway from the LG store as separate apps. I really hate the way Apple integrates all this stuff anyway - it invariably tries to make me pay for content that I already own and is just unintelligent. LG has full access to the iPlayer BTW

Have to say I find the LG apps absolutely fine, and use their content browser to play back films and TV stored on my Mac's hard drives. Works very well.

If I need anything more exotic I'll power up the fire stick and use Kodi

just buy a fire stick 4K - will do very nicely, and save you a bundle. I like the Apple TV (have 2 x 4K ones and about 10 older ones) but the fire stick and on board TV apps do everything I need.

So my sm8200 can support Dolby Atmos yet or for the nanocell 2019 line it’s still pending because on my settings Dolby Atmos still doesn’t appear in the settings, only Dolby digital plus but when I go on Apple TV and pick a film the soundbar on my Sony indicates Dolby Atmos - DD+ ?

Ah that’s not good, I’m very close to buying a 2019 NanoCell, SM9010. So the Apple TV app update isn’t released for 2019 yet only 2020?

I thought it would be the same app for 2019 and 2020 as it’s from the same store on the same WebOS? What version is your 2019 and what is the 2020?

Thought there was an issue with U.K. iPlayer on LG at the moment? Review on LG even states missing and recent? Good if ok. Are all catchup UK on there now?

Seems ok integrated on Apple TV, but not that bothered as I have all catchup on my BT UHD box anyway, apart from Apple+ which is reason I want one, to get rid of my Apple TV (no. 4K), or have to upgrade to the 4K version.

What Tv do you have btw?

Would this play stuff from a NAS? I use Plex on my Apple TV, so would want something to play direct via the LG as well.

Thanks

I presume no problem from an NAS. I use twonky on the Mac, which the TV finds easily. Also have a 250gb SSD attached to the TV usb with content on it which the LG browser addresses.

we use iplayer all the time for our baby son (obsessed with Bing!) and the other catchups work fine that we’ve tried (ITV and 4).

Not sure of the model but I have 65 inch S9? from 2019 and a higher specced non-OLED 2018 model. Still awaiting Apple app for that one. I think the model you are getting is the same as my 2019 one. Apple tv definitely available on that.

The version I have is the sm2800 it’s the 2019 version and it can get very confusing since we aren’t sure when earc will or will not be supported for these models, it’s quite confusing and this is because LG shows no clarity to which models will and won’t get Dolby Atmos support through the update.

The 2019 has 48Gbs 2.1 ports. Though you lose the 120hz BFI (from my understanding).

Interesting. Maybe this is leading to them discontinuing the Apple TV box.

It’s what I want to do ideally, retire my Apple TV for my main TV anyway. If I get a 4K TV I’d need a new Apple TV 4K anyway, and only use it for watching my iTunes movies. That’s why I want a TV with the Apple TV+ app on.

Other Apple TV’s in house are really handy though, eg for TV’s that don’t have a free view, can get live TV, catchup etc via Apple TV and WiFi and using TVplayer app can get free view channels.

Nope. Apple tv does a lot of things your smart tv will never do. And why would apple, which is very serious about services, want to be in a position where it is reliant on the good will of hisense, Vizio, sony, samsung, lg, etc. to allow people to see its content?

When apple invents airplay 5, why does it want the hassle of having to convince all these companies to come along, and how many people will consider airplay 5 a reason to buy a new phone when it means they also need to buy next year’s new model tv because samsung decided only to upgrade TVs bought in the last six months?

You don’t get how apple thinks if you think this is a possibility.

Maybe so but who wants to pay Apple prices for a box whose core functionality (whatever the bells and whistles Apple try and force upon you) remains the replay of purchased content. An App either on the TV or on the superbly capable Firestick 4K will do that nicely.

I don't think Apple gets what it thinks itself re the ATV box -its grotesquely over-priced and the launch of ATV apps is probably a mortal blow in terms of the box entering the mainstream.

That’s the problem though, for what I would want without an Apple TV+ app or an actual Apple TV 4K, can’t play iTunes movies in 4K.

That’s why want a working Apple TV+ app ideally.

Im pretty sure the Firestick plays back iTunes films in 4K - my TV certainly goes to Dolby Vision

The Roku TV Apple Tv app has been updated as well. It now supports Atmos. I get confirmation of the Atmos signal on my Sonos App. Atmos also shows up in the audio details of movies on the Apple TV app on Roku. I have a TCL 2018 6 series that doesn't support Atmos from the Apple TV 4K to my Sonos Arc. But I am now getting Atmos on my Arc via the Apple TV App on the Roku platform.
