Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem - but my UltraFine 23.7" displays both adapt automatically to room brightness with sensors built into each monitor. Using macOS 10.14.6 on a 2017 15" MBP with Touch Bar (
MacBookPro14,3)

Interesting. What's the model number on your UltraFine? And can you go to System Preferences > Displays and confirm that there are is a checkbox for "Automatically adjust brightness" on the control windows for both monitors? To my knowledge, no one with the 4k or 5k UltraFine has this option, even on the latest firmware.

Seems that the new 24 inch model and the 'new' 5k both have the Ambient feature whereas first gen users have been shafted.

I just purchased 22MD4KA with MacBook Pro 13" 2019 (2 Thunderbolt 3 ports) last week, and both devices had upgraded to latest version of firmware/operation system. However only TT(base on Mac's ALS)work, there is not automatic brightness adjust in setting. It seems that lg is never going to activate this function.

Eh it works on my LG. Are you using the Thunderbolt Cable?

Hello
Are you sure you have a 22MD4KA monitor? Because only the successor of it (24MD4KL) has the Thunderbolt port. Mine only has one USB-C 3.1 and Three USB-C 2.0 ports.

Sorry, I didn't see your response. The model I'm using is 24MD4KL-B.AUSA.

I'm currently frustrated that the 'auto-brightness' seems to have too high of a gain. I keep turning it up and down. When using it against a white wall, moving my head one way or the other takes it from too dim to retina-burning bright. I've settled on disabling auto-brightness for now.

My wife has the newest (as of late 2019) 24" LG UltraFine display, and I verified that both on Mojave and Catalina, the checkbox for automatic brightness is available in System Preferences. I contacted LG about this weeks ago, and they still haven't gotten back to me. I am not sure if it's a problem that firmware can fix. It may just be that only the newest ones have this fix/feature exposed to Mac OS?

I built a utility to work around the faulty ambient light sensor. It piggybacks on your MacBook's ambient light sensor, polling every 5 minutes, and synchronizes the LG display (or any other display's) brightness to match.

See: https://github.com/willsthompson/BrightRight
I can't seem to get your utility to work. I understand I'm now using OS X Monterey 12.3.1, so that may an issue.

i had high hopes, though!
It's 2022, and my LG 5K from late-2016 still doesn't work as I believe it should with the auto-sensing brightness. ?

Any news here? I just picked up a 27” LG Ultrafine 5k (27MD5KA-B) and it doesn’t have the “automatically adjust brightness” checkbox in settings that my 24” LG Ultrafine 4k has… In System Information they both say “Yes,” like in complaxneoda’s screenshot.

2024 Mac Mini M4 Pro checking in. 5K has no issues, 22" 4k will not adjust brightness nor show as capable in system report.
