Hi,

Does anybody know if the Ultrafine 5k is still current or perhaps discontinued?

In the UK it went out of stock at Apple UK and all the store pick-up stock depleted a couple of weeks ago. It hasn't been restocked, although last week it became available again through 3rd party / non-Apple sellers - 100+ units.

Seems strange that it's available again elsewhere but not restocked by Apple.

Any ideas? Would like to purchase but is there something new coming?

S

I am watching the Ultrafine 5K closely as I am thinking of buying one. It was out of stock just about everywhere until recently so I attribute that to COVID and not any plan to discontinue. It is in stock in some Apple stores in the US and Amazon, Adorama and BHPhotoVideo all got units in just within the last couple weeks. The monitor was updated (minor) end of July 2019 to up the power to 94 watts (to match new 16" MacBook Pro) and added USB-C connection (instead of just thunderbolt 3). Who knows if a new iMac will bring display changes such that an update is needed to the Ultrafine but I am going to buy this week regardless. For a monitor that is over 3 years old there is still match for resolution, brightness, and Mac integration that I have found.

I find it particularly pricey. If you do make photo or video edit Or any graphics related application, it’s justified. If you don’t, I’d pick a Dell Ultrasharp. Cost way less and still offer very good performance.

The Dell's like almost every other monitor out there do not match the 500 nit brightness of the LG. Yes the monitor is pricey no doubt but for something I look at 8 hours every day...

You work in graphics ?
I don't work in graphics - just appreciate a razor sharp, bright monitor. The color matching capabilities of this monitor are lost on me but I could not find a cheaper 4K monitor with 500 nit brightness. I also appreciate the deep Mac integration and single cable operation of the ultra fines. I would get the Ultrafine 4K but want at least a 27" monitor.

I've the Dell U2720Q at office and the latest refresh LG 5k at home. The Dell works great in office due to it's anti glare coating eliminating tons of uncontrolled lights in office. Also, I've 20/20 eyesight and find the pixel density on it pretty alright.

But the LG5K does have more saturated colours and works great at home where I can control light sources. Can't see it being in great in my office as it's really bright in my office.

However, I must say fine text especially on spreadsheet looks really great on the LG 5k. So I guess it really depends on use case.

Also in the market for a decent 5K monitor for my MacBook, just checked LG's website in Australia and the UltraFine 5K is marked as "discontinued" there:

Given those panels were matching the iMacs (if I recall that right?), maybe there's hope for something new coming throughout the year

That version of the monitor 27MD5KA was discontinuted and replaced by the 27M5KLB in July 2019. It upped the power charging to 94w and added USB-C for 4K connectivity in addition to the Thunderbolt 3 for 5K

If this means that Apple will produce a new display to replace this one manufactured by LG, these are excellent news!
I am still patiently waiting for a new Apple branded monitor (with a reasonable price) to invest in a completely new MacBook Pro.
I am pretty sure that a Reboot on a Apple Cinema Display or similar would be a success all over the world!
If Apple engineers read this forum, and I believe they do, surprise us!

That’s the older model. The newer one (27MD5L) also works with iPads and 12” MacBooks at 4K over USB-C.

Just picked up the Lg 5K Ultrafine 27MD5L and have to say I am on the fence about what to do with this monitor. I was debating between this and the Dell U2720Q.

The LG 5K looks amazing - no question, but upon further analysis... I find that the LG Ultrafine profile in Mac OS is NOT accurate at all. After a calibration I get lifted blacks and lose some of the vivid saturation/blacks.

Has anyone found their LG 5K to be color accurate "out of the box?" or is this lifting of blacks/loss of vividness normal...

I love the way it Looks out of the box, but if it's not accurate then I need to use the flatter profile created by calibration... which removes the "wow" factor.

Wondering if I got a dud or of this is normal?

Also - How is your screen uniformity? On a white screen I see more magenta ares on the left hand side...

Its an expensive screen... the design is ugly but yes the screen looks beautiful but i think the price is a little too much... ugh...

Can't help but think maybe apple will release a new screen with the upcoming imac update... thoughts?

Any advice on color issue appreciated

Seeing Amazon showing out of stock soon and Apple showing "Delivery unavailable", maybe they're facing a shortage or maybe something else is coming up..

Some other resellers have them in stock, though. My guess is that there are supply chain issues in the current environment.

My new one that arrived yesterday was not very accurate. After calibrating it is much better.

Also - How is your screen uniformity?

Awful - I've organised a swap. My 2 year old mid range 4K LG (almost a third of the price when new) is much better.

Can't seem to edit above... don't forget to make sure true tone and night shift are off.

Am curious. After Calibration did you find the black were "lifted" and contrast etc not as rich/vivid as compared to the included LG Ultrafine profile in MacOs?

Where di you arrange the Swap? I bought mine from amazon and they said I could only return and not replace. I'm scared the new one would be worse... I was hoping to get a replacement to compare before keeping one or sending both back

Included profile was warmer than calibrated and blacks were too low. So after calibration the tone more accurate and detail in darker areas improved. You could possibly interpret that as reduced contrast but only because it wasn't right in the first place.

I bought my monitor from Apple. They offered to do a swap because it was like this out of the box and because I need the monitor for work.

I calibrated using a colormunki BTW (again can't seem to edit properly)

similar with my calibration. Yes let me know how the swaped one looks when you get it. Trying to decide if i should order another one or just figure out another option

Ok.

I'm software engineer and I see no way of spending 5000$ in a 3-display setup (as I usually have) for brightness I never crank that much.

But your choice ...

Oh a software engineer...impressive...probably half the people here are software "engineers".

I just got another copy. Screen uniformity is slightly better - definitley not perfect, but then... GUESS WHAT?

VERTICLE LINES ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE!!!!!

I give up. MAYBE I'M ASKIGN FOR TOO MUCH? I JUST CAN'T HANDLE THE IDEA OF PAYING $1300+TAX FOR A MONITOR WITH THESE DEFECTS.

I WILL HAVE TO DO WITHOUT NOW. Any suggestions for an alternative?
