Apple is sold out of the $1,300 LG UltraFine 5K Display, which is listed as "Currently Unavailable" from the online Apple Store and is unavailable for pickup from Apple retail stores.

The LG UltraFine 5K Display is not available for purchase in the United States, the UK, Canada, and Brazil, as noted by 9to5Mac. Prior to when the monitor was listed as unavailable, there were long shipping times after purchase, which suggests there could be possible supply issues.

If supply issues are indeed at fault (and supply problems have also caused long shipping times for other Apple products like the iMac), the display's unavailability is likely to be temporary. Apple has not provided details on whether the monitor is temporarily sold out or no longer being sold, however.

Last May, the 5K LG UltraFine Display was also listed as unavailable from the Apple Store prior to a refresh in late July 2019, which is the model that was purchasable up until recently. Apple is continuing to offer the Pro Display XDR, but that is a much more expensive display option at $5,000. The 4K LG UltraFine model is also available for purchase.

The Thunderbolt 3 LG UltraFine 5K Display offers a 5120 x 2880 resolution with 14.7 million pixels and P3 wide color gamut, plus built-in stereo speakers, a camera, a microphone, and an adjustable stand at a $1,300 price point.

That image is driving me crazy. The sun is on the right but all the light is from the left.
It's a panorama, so imagine it wrapped 180-270° around you. I think panoramas almost always look weird on flat displays.

I own two of these monitors. They are terrific! Not sure why everyone is hating on them. In fact, name a monitor that is better under $3,000?

This monitor makes 4K monitors (of the same size) look pixelated.

I dream the out-of-stock means an amazing Apple display is here, but alas I suspect it’s just work from home and learn from home demand.

But I’d love an Apple display The LG is ugly as sin. I’m stunned Apple hasn’t released one years ago. Huge miss.

It's kind of crazy how little these HiDPI screens have caught on among manufacturers. I really thought there would be a lot more 5K options right now, I'd personally love a larger 5K monitor like in 30-32" to replace my 24" 1920x1200 monitor.

I think it's mainly about the bandwidth requirements, which exceed what can be achieved with a single DisplayPort 1.2 stream. Thunderbolt 3 can carry two of these streams. What apple does is combine the throughput from both to make it a single port solution (the only 5K monitor outside of the LG used two DP cables).

This could of course be remedied by DP 1.4 (which I think Thunderbolt 4 may support, single stream). At this point I think the bigger issue is the lack of demand in the high end monitor market for these displays. (Before covid) most average users aren't using desktops and monitors anyway, the largest market for high end monitors most likely belonging to gaming (where high refresh rate is more desirable that resolution) and productivity (where I feel ultra wide monitors have caught on).

I personally would love to see a high refresh rate ultra wide at this pixel density (even if no GPU in the world could run a game on the thing). Maybe that would be possible with DP2.0, but doubt we'll see anything like that in the near future.

Brah, I dont think such a monitor exists. Most of the hate stems from how its "ugly"

How can Apple sell such an ugly, far removed from Apple's design aesthetic standards is beyond ridiculous.

Brah, they had no viable alternative

In person, you hardly notice that the top bezel is wider than the rest. It looks very natural. The monitor itself is very minimalistic.

That built-in webcam has been pretty damn nice for Zoom’ing with people at work.

Agreed. Just got mine a few weeks ago. It's sensational, really. 5K is where it's at on a 27". Gives you that perfect 2560x1440 in terms of real estate, at FOUR times the pixel density of a 2560x1440 monitor. I have this 5K display right next to a 27" actual 1440p LCD, and it's utterly painful to use that screen.

Seems to still be available at other stores (like BestBuy and Amazon). In addition, the Roosevelt Field Apple store has it available for in store pick up tomorrow. Not sure I really get the point of this news article. If there's a supply chain issue, wouldn't all of the products retailers be affected?

I have designed a 27” 5K @60Hz monitor with the same LG panel as the one used in the 27” LG UltraFine. It uses one cable connection from the Mac via a USB-C-to-DP cable and is capable of supplying power to the MacBook via a special cable with the PD USB-C tap. The power to the Mac can be supplied from the monitor or from the Mac’s USB-C power brick via the same cable used for sending video signal to the monitor. It’s is not a Thunderbolt Display. Instead, for 5K video, the DP1.4 port is used in the monitor. For 4K @60Hz video, there are two HDMI 2.0 ports for two displays. There’s also a USB-C port for 4K @60 Hz. There can be up to four sources connected simultaneously to this monitor: three 4K @60Hz and one 5K@60Hz.

The price is $699 (including drop shipping from China with A 7-day shipping service). The monitor doesn’t have a camera or speakers.

The picture quality is fantastic, and is exactly the same quality when compared side-by-side with the LG UltraFine. The monitor goes to sleep together with the Mac and wakes up properly. It works properly with the Mac with the open lid and with the closed lid (clamshell).

I have completed the testing phase of the prototypes and ready to start mass manufacturing. Is there any interest in such a monitor?

Really..? Apple, a trillion dollar company that sells products all over the world for decades now, had no viable alternative? Nah, I don't buy it. SJ's Apple would never have settled for this level of aesthetics mediocrity. This is just the way New Apple thinks and operates.

Brah, I agree with you. I'm not justifying their decision, they clearly had the capability to release one based on the 5K iMacs.
