F...it might be my cable going bad then. Or the lg monitor patch that i probably havent kept up with

I just picked up a used LG 5K which claims to be the 27MD5KL-B and is supposedly 3 years old. Software-wise, is there an away to confirm my model? Display just says LG UltraFine and System Information also just says LG UltraFine. Any other ways to identify it?

Edit: No retention nor ghosting.

If you detach the monitor stand attachment on the back of the monitor, it should have the model number listed.

27MD5KA has product ID 5b11 ioreg -l | grep -E "DisplayProductID.*= $((0x5b11))$"
27MD5KL has product ID 5b74 ioreg -l | grep -E "DisplayProductID.*= $((0x5b74))$"

The line should show a property "DisplayProductID" with the number in decimal.

Thx @joevt. It looks like I actually ended up with the MD5KA instead of the MD5KL (which was what it was advertised) :-

Code:
me@iMacPro ~ % ioreg -l | grep -E "DisplayProductID.*= $((0x5b11))$"
    | | | | | | "DisplayProductID" = 23313
me@iMacPro ~ % ioreg -l | grep -E "DisplayProductID.*= $((0x5b74))$"
me@iMacPro ~ %

@kerplunknet, thx. I did find the barcode label in the end which confirmed the ioreg above. Hopefully the seller is willing to refund.

Edit: is it worthy to chase after a refund for this mistake? i.e. I've read the differences between the MD5KL and the MD5KA in terms of the Thunderbolt3 vs USB-C and supposedly the MD5KL fixes the ghosting/image retention issues that the MD5KA had. However it doesn't seem like every MD5KA has the issue, and this particular MD5KA is supposedly 3 yrs old already and doesn't seem to have this image retention issue.

Should I still chase after a refund or stick to it?

The seller has offered a refund and a rebate option and I've opted for the rebate option. It's not had any trouble in the 3 yrs of his ownership, and looking at the back seal sticker, it was made in 2018. So if it had problems it would have developed by now. Fingers crossed it'll continue staying in good shape for the future.

I've also just seen YT with connector problems with the 27MD5KL-B so it looks like the newer model also has its own issues.

Hi guys! I just ordered a LG Ultrafine 5k to drive a Mac Studio M2 Ultra.
I already owned this monitor back in 2016 but sold it after one year to get a new iMac 5k.
Now that I need to upgrade to the Mac Studio I have no other options than re-purchase this monitor. In my country it is 1300€ cheaper than the studio display with the height adjustable stand! (970€ vs 2260€)
I previously owned the first version of this monitor, which had pink colors at the borders and some burn in effect.
Did LG solve this problem in the updated model?

Latest version has been pretty good for me. Disclaimer this is for US stock. I do still have the sleep issue where i have to unplug replug

I have not had any problems with mine which I got a couple of years ago - 27MD5KL - except for a tendancy for it to turn back on much brighter than I prefer it but this seems to be a software issue as this varies with different versions of MacOS and is a relatively minor issue.

Thanks. What’s the issue exactly?

Great. I ordered the 27MD5KL-B. Do you if there is a difference with the 27MD5KL?

occasionally when waking from sleep the monitor wont activate which is a prob since the macbook itself is in clamshell on the left side of my desk. Only fix is the wake by opening the laptop and manual unplugging and replugging the tb cable

hmm still happening today. Seems to be when the computer goes to sleep not just the sleep of the display

Theres a setting for Battery & Energy that states Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off, wonder if i should enable that? Seems like then the air would be on all day?

Hello Guys,

I ordered the LG Ultrafine 5K with article number 27MD5KL-B. Today the store I bought it from contacted me saying that particular model is out of stock and they have a newer version in stock which is the 27MD5KLP-B.

Does anyone know what's the difference?!

Found this comparison between all the LG Ultrafine 5K displays ever released. Apparently the "LP" one is a new release from this year. Only difference that I could find is the contrast and the power consumption in sleep mode, so maybe it solves the issues that some people are experiencing.

The only difference I see is they are now advertising it as 1100:1 contrast ratio instead of 1200:1. The updated website shows 1100:1 too. I wonder if it's actually less or if it's just more accurate to the true number.

Hmm interesting! I'll be able to compare it with an iMac 27". The sleep consumption is also higher in the newer model

Ultrafine 4k owner here. Does anyone have a version of either 4k or 5k with the EU power cable? I suspect it might be the same as the 4k on the 5k. If you do have it, could you please confirm it's the same based on the information below and post the manufacturer and the model number so I could find it and buy it somewhere. I could only find standard shaped power cables from ebay and Amazon. A swap within Europe could also be an option. That's of course if the power cables of these monitors are the same.

Mine is the UK version, it looks like this and is about 1.8m long. The other end is the standard UK plug, manufacturer is Longwell.

Any luck finding the EU cable? I just picked up my own 22" Ultrafine display, but it only came with a UK power cable and a generic one just doesn't look right. I know that since I scored it for about €70 on FB Marketplace in fantastic condition, with the box and everything included I shouldn't really complain, but my OCD is stronger. I wonder if perhaps LG could sell it as a spare part directly...?

Why not pick up a power strip that is universal?

For one, it kinda adds more pain to the hassle. Also good luck finding a power strip with UK power outlets and EU wall plug in the heart of Europe.

Anyway, for anybody wondering: I contacted the local service provider for LG and they were very helpful finding the right part for me and quoted ~35 EUR tax and shipping included. The catalogue part # of the 220V EU cable is LG EAD63890501 and is widely available on e.g. eBay for about the same price.

Received the LG Ultrafine 5K for my new M2 Ultra. This is my second Ultrafine. I initially had the first model from 2016 which suffered from burn in and purple tint.

The display is absolutely amazing and looks identical to the iMac 27”.
Colors calibration looks the same and there is probably has a touch more contrast in favor of the LG.
The LG has a warmer tone compared to the iMac and MacBook Pro 16”, which I personally like it more. Glad LG solved all the display issues.

I’ll miss the esthetics of the iMac but I’m glad I have chosen this over the Studio Display which was 1300€ MORE expensive.

I honestly prefer to wait and save some extra cash to get the Apple XDR which next to the Studio Display is like night and day.

This is the KLP? I don't supposed you can see/tell if the USB-C/Thunderbolt connectors at the back are "more secure" than the original KA or KL-B? I think some of the older revisions (at least the KL-B?) seems to suffer with weak USB-C soldering joints.

Does anyone find that the top row at the pixel level of the main computer monitor doesn't line up to the top row of the LG 5K? i.e. as I move my mouse cursor from the top row (e.g. row 0) of my iMac Pro to the edge, as the cursor rolls over to the LG 5K, it is then in the a different row # of the LG 5K that's midway through the LG 5K screen.

Anyone knows how to fix this?
