If you're saying 32" monitors don't have enough pixels well there are already 8K 32" monitors out there so it's only a matter of time before there are 6K models (pretty sure there are already 5K 32" displays).
Either way it matters less on a bigger screen... because you're not supposed to sit 12" away from it like I have seen many people do with these 27" units and the 24" monitors that were all the rage years ago.

You have to look at the history of Apple's scaling. They've always stuck with mostly 2X (iPhones, MacBooks, iMacs) and 3X (iPhone+ models).
You simply can't just pick a resolution and hope it'll work. You have to do the math and it has to fit in a 2X scaling multiplier that allows for reasonable text size.
8K is way too high for 2X scaling on a 32", text would be super small. You would need a 40" monitor to have the same text size as a 27" @ 1440p.
Most likely, Apple's monitor will be a 5K 27". There's a slim chance that they'll release a 30" 5120x3200 retina display. It would meet criteria of 2X and standard text size. But even if they do, the text size is still too small for you.
The problem is, you prefer text size that's larger than standard. So you have to adjust the monitor to fit YOUR needs.

Just curious, and there's too much going on in the past 40+ pages for me to check, but is anyone else continually having issues unplugging their 5Ks? I've had to restart my MBP three times today as each time I unplug my 5Ks my local screen stays black. Is the solution really to have to take the MBP out of clamshell mode to disconnect a monitor? Thought that'd of been fixed in 10.12.4.
I've had it happen once to my MBP. I'm on 10.12.4 with a 703 monitor.
For some reason sleep/wake has always been an issue even prior to the LG 5K. I've had problems connecting to normal monitors. It's just that the LG 5K has exasperated the issue.
I just got my 3rd unit today and it is once again a 612 Serial Number. What do I have to do to get one that is not refurbed and made after the correction (ie 703+). I waited until the end of march to order hoping they would run out of the "old" stock and start shipping new versions....no luck.
Called apple to complain, will see what they come back with. Only option now is to exchange since the price went up. How are others getting the 703 serial number units.... or do I just have bad luck.

Zero buyer's remorse from me. The Apple display is at least 8 months away, more likely 14 months away at WWDC 2018 and we know nothing about the specs, design or price. In the meantime I get to enjoy 35 Megapixels of real estate for work instead of just 5. All good! 😎

You could equally argue that Apple went from 24" to 21.5" and from 30" to 27"
The 24" iMac was 1920x1200 and the 21.5" is either 1920x1080 or 4096x2304 for non-retina and retina respectively. In terms of screen real estate these are much more comparable. Same thing for the 30" ACD and the 27" Thunderbolt Display which are similar resolutions.
I wouldn't hold your breath waiting on a 32" display as it's highly unlikely any time soon and would be a very niche product. As others have said, if you need bigger text then just slide the slider and scale up. Most of us seem very happy at the standard or even smaller scale sizes despite sitting at 24-30" distance, not 12" as you keep saying.

There's no way to get the model you want. It's a lottery. BTW, 702+ is the non refurbished.
If your monitor has a black square or circle, you should be fine regardless of model.
I don't think they are just my needs - text that is too small is not great for readability - for most of us. Many people just seem to 'put up' with stuff.
They may well have - but they are not the authority on what's the standard nor on what is 'best'. They can be (and have been!) wrong.
Exactly what I was hearing when people were running 24" monitors at 1920x1200. *sigh.
1440p 27" monitors have been out for years. I would say that you're in the minority.
What are you trying to achieve by getting a 703? Did you inspect the one that was shipped to see if everything is okay?
As long as the shielding is installed (as indicated by the black circle on the box), then I don't see a reason why you'd keep exchanging until you get a 703. From what I'm reading, the 703s haven't fixed anything beyond the shielding problems. If I were you, I'd check that you've got:
* The black circle on the box (could also stick a WiFi router behind your screen, just to be sure)
* The external monitor case being in good condition
* Minimal backlight bleed
* Good colour uniformity
If you've got all of these things to a satisfactory level, then just hold on to it. You could easily keep exchanging to get a 703 which then has terrible backlight bleed, which is worse than not having the shielding installed from start of manufacturing IMHO. 🙂
EXACTLY. The goal is to get a great performing monitor, not a minimum serial number. These two goals are not fully overlapping.
I accept that I probably am (people who are very independently minded usually are). (I think some studies have been done on this (and other) personality types.)
Next year soon enough? From the latest MR story:

I could care less about the serial number. What I do care about is good color uniformity. I just return mine due this issue. I really hope my replacement is better.

32" is too small IMO for 8K. It would need two TB3 to drive that beast.
I reckon it might be 32" @ 5K (or possibly 6K). This would allow a 4K video to be edited 1:1 at a decent size.
Although 8K cameras are out there, they are very very high end (8K cameras cost 50K!!) and a way off from being even semi-pro let alone mainstream - so I don't think they'll be catering for that market... but who knows 😛

I think we're arguably being a bit closed minded when we imagine a standard form-factor display and thus try to reverse-engineer a size from the 8K rumour.
Looking at what displays are hitting the market recently, curved displays are emerging, for example the LG 38UC99 (and others in the series and from other manufacturers). Curved displays seem (understandably) to have died in the TV sector, but they make far more sense in the desktop setting. Indeed, the present paradigm of multi-display setups is a product of technological limitation rather than design intent. I can envision, for example, an Apple display in 2019, alongside the Mac Pro, that is curved and ultra wide - and thus technically 8K, but not in the way we are thinking about it.
Curved displays are great for gamers - but not professionals who rely on visuals (curved displays skew things). So they're not great for graphical work, and I would say not great even audio work where you are dealing with waveforms etc.
I guess what i was trying to achieve is not to have a monitor that was built in December and gone back to the factory to have the shielding installed after the fact. I wanted a 703 (or 702 for that matter) to assure I got a monitor that went through the assembly process once and was completed and not retrofitted (which in my mind is a refurb).
I do have the black dot on my 612. And it is sitting 2 feet from my apple time capsule (w/o any sign of interference).
It is working fine so far, except for the sleep from wake which seems to be hit or miss. I will ride out my 14 days and see how it behaves and either keep it or exchange it an roll the dice one last time.
Yeah, cool. Sorry I didn't mean to sound harsh, but I think there are more important things to strive for in getting a high quality build of a monitor model, especially when you've been prepared to exchange it already 🙂 It's a shame that IPS panels still suffer from these problems to this day, can be really disappointing how different backlight bleed can be from one copy to the next.
I've got 702s and they have wake from sleep issues. Mine seem to be fine 9 times out of 10, and I've had a few weird things where the MacBook will either lock up, or fail to show its own screen. When plugging in two of these monitors, they sometimes refresh about 3 or 4 times like they're trying to decide how the screen config should be setup. This seems to be on Apple to make macOS a bit smoother in this regard.
Good luck with the current monitor anyway. And totally your call if you want to roll that dice 🙂

The sleep/wake issues are absolutely on Apple. The quality of macOS has been slowly deterioting over the past five years. They spend far too much time focusing on making it look like iOS then fixing basic issues like plugging in/out a monitor or waking from sleep!

I get this exact thing with two UltraFine 4K monitors. Do you find after all that flickering off and on that the result is sometimes only one monitor will work, plus the MacBook's display (and the other monitor stays dark)?
