This reads like a paid advertisement more so than an actual review.

I disagree. It reads like an objective product review, concluding that it's a worthy companion to the MacBook Pro because "if you're in the market for a 5K display to use with your new MacBook Pro, you don't really have any other options." Hardly a glowing recommendation.

Also:
Make no mistake, this doesn't look like an Apple display, but it's certainly not terrible.
If that seems like an ad to you, I'd love to hear some of your compliments. "Don't get me wrong, you're not beautiful, but you're not terrible."

I used Apple products because they are beautiful, sturdy, and cooperate together. I love the harmony of the ecosystem and aesthetics. If I wanted function over form, I would buy PCs - oh wait - I did this year because Apple hasn't updated some products in years. This 3rd party device is part of a problem at Apple and their brand.

I've replaced my Airport, monitors, PC, and AppleTV since the ridiculous Apple announcement of the MacBook in October - I am eyeing Google Pixel for phone and tablet in the coming months too. I even abandoned iCloud for Google services. And Siri is a joke next to Google Assistant, so Google Home will happen soon.

Apple will need a big bang release of a lot of stuff at one time to really knock my socks off - but I just don't think they can pull it off.
Even the Pixel is not perfect. Many devices have been powering down with 30% battery left. A case of out of the frying pan into the fire perhaps?
IMHO, you must have more money than sense. I would have used the Apple devices I had until they needed replacing an then getting the best in class replacement so it seems that you really have flipped onto the dark side. Goold luck with all that Google data slurping.
I've abandonded Windows and Google in 2016. I didn't care for the slurping of my life.
Just remember, YOU are the product not the Android phone, google services, you, your life and everything.
Apple isn't perfect. Not by a long chalk but compared to Google and MS and Facebook and Twitter etc, they are the good guys.

These are pretty much my thoughts as well. The resolution, brightness, and colors are all fantastic. Hard to notice the aesthetics when you're looking at this screen. The minimalist black lets the screen itself take center stage. The "forehead" is a little annoying, but I don't notice it unless I look at it while the display is off, which is rare.

Does anyone know the camera resolution? I contacted Apple and even their support team doesn't know! I would assume 720p, but then again there is a 480p webcam in the MacBook. Those bezels are certainly chunky enough to house an HD camera.

Yep, not as good as antennagate on the iPhone 4. Or as good as the first iPhones which had displays that stopped functioning. Or as good as the iPhone 3G or 3GS that took a step backwards - removing the fused glass/LCD and which allowed outrageous amounts of dust and debris in between the glass and the LCD panel. Or as good as the old MacBook Pros that had bunk CD/DVD drives. Or as good as the so-obviously-rushed iPad 3 that ran hot and was underpowered.

I could go on.

Apple isn't perfect now. And it wasn't then, either.

The difference now is Tim isn't as good as Steve was in "smoothing" things over.

I think we can at least all agree that Steve is rolling in his grave at the sight of this plastic monitor.
I think we can all agree even more that if Steve is rolling in his grave, there's an earthquake in the general area or they're secretly moving him to the new spaceship. I think we can all agree most that if he rolled at the sight of this monitor then he would be a shoe in for a guest 3-4 episode arc on The Walking Dead.:p:D

I did a Quicktime video using the camera and it recorded in 720p, so I'm assuming that is the resolution of the camera.

See my earlier comment in the thread.

Why is that a problem exactly? I come here because I like the site. I come here for no cost, not paid a cent since joining. The odd ad isn't a problem. In fact I wouldn’t even bat an eyelid if they doubled the number of ads.

BryanJ is talking about the way the review reads, not about the ads on the site.

I want one, too bad I don't have one of the new MacBook Pros
My situation exactly. I'd LOVE an upgrade to my Thunderbolt Display but the MBP 2016 15" didn't deliver the >16GB memory or enough CPU/GPU performance jump over my 4+ year old 2012 rMBP to justify dropping $4000 for a new MBP. Disappointed.

I simply cannot understand why LG did not cooperate with Apple on the design of this monitor, which was clearly meant for Macs. Jony Ive could have designed something better on his lunch break.

This monitor is deliberately ugly. I take the message from Apple/LG to be: this is a display for pros, and pros aren't supposed to care what it looks like but only how it performs.
Fake pros are getting outed.

Disclaimer: I am not a pro. I don't like the LG display.
I also fully understand that traditionally Apple has designed beautiful-looking hardware for pros. Maybe that phase is ending. But while you may want to take a MBP to a coffee shop to show off, you're not supposed to show off with a 27" monitor that sits in the privacy of your "pro" environment. So ultimately, this makes sense from Apple. This monitor is not aimed at families' living rooms: that's the iMac 27".

If you happen to have an older MBP that you could test with a TB3 to TB2 adapter at 3840x2160 that would be great. I'd like to purchase this monitor ahead of buying a new MBP, and before the special pricing has expired.

Worthy companion, my ass. The display have a limited colorspace. They can't do full, or even close to full, Adobe RGB 1998. I would have bought a new monitor since the one I am using is aging. These are useless to me...

Apple never made a display with that color space or anywhere close to it. If you actually needed this color space, you would have known that.

So, the ass you're talking about; it's more likely you're talking out of it.

I'd love to know how it works with an iMac 5K. Once you have the writer cable, can it match the look of the iMac 5K in resolution, screen height, etc?
We will have to wait until Apple releases a brand new iMac 5K with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. This will make it possible to have a dual 5K setup at nearly 30 million pixels.

Can't say I'm digging the un-evenness of the bezel being larger on the top side than the bottom. Symmetry is wonderful.

I didn't notice that before, now that is all that I can see. It's worse than the Dell "webcam at the bottom" thing that drives me crazy when I look at their precision line.

Overall, I think this would be great next to an updated iMac, and I wouldn't doubt that it would be a great companion for the machine it was introduced alongside. I just hope the price stays reasonable.

It's still a missed opportunity they didn't pack it into an Apple case. They should use the iMac stand for it. Maybe it would cost a few dollars more but it would fit in line with the rest. Now we've another ugly duck in the pond. (Screens of iMacs are lg also).

Oh well, dongles, cables, different routers, different monitors... if Angela Ahrends reads this, she will understand as a fashionista how important the total package of a fashion label is.

I asked Apple when the monitor was first announced, countless people on Twitter and LG, as well as when items were delivered but still have yet to find anyone to confirm the resolution of the camera. So far Macs have been limited to 720 and hoping this highend monitor will finally support at least HD (1080). So odd that it doesn't mention this spec anywhere. Can someone confirm?

Unpacking this monitor, I thought, this feels like a crappy, bargain-basement experience. I'm also not crazy about the look of the plastic shell, although it's actually of decent quality and the base is metal. The wires and dongles hanging off the back don't make me happy either.

However, I can tell you that the actual screen is AMAZING. It's by far the most beautiful, vibrant screen I've ever used, including the screen on my 15" MBP with touch bar. Also, it does seem like magic plugging in one cable and getting power, monitor, and all my peripherals instantly working. Finally, the height adjustment really is nice.

To recap, looking at it off on my desk makes me a little sad, but using it is truly a pleasure.
