I'm calling all my local best buys right now looking for a model number with 200k and above. Hopefully I find one and I will let all of you know how it is if I get ahold of one.

In black or White? I have a black one in the 220K range, and it is a gen 3 case.

I just went to Best Buy, and the local ones still just have the same range I have or lower. I will wait till I see some in the upper 200's.

I agree. Looks like the best I can tell is the white started around 190,000 for the gen4.
Mine is 197,909 and it is gen4

Yeah sorry I'd better double-check mine. It's white and I thought it was 163,XXX but now that I'm thinking again it may have been 193,XXX.

EDIT: I was correct that my white Gen 4 case was indeed #163,XXX.

Also thought I'd mention that I went ahead and removed that lens thing over the proximity sensor since I know this case is going back anyway. So far the sensor seems to work fine both holding the phone to my ear to activate Siri and during calls. No more issues with the top left of the screen either. I'll keep an eye on it but it seems like there are no problems so far.

In white people are reporting 200k being the 4th gen.

I agree with that based on what I have been reading. I am looking for Black, and am not sure where that one starts for Gen 4.

I had seen a post stating that the black started in the high 100's? Mine is higher than that and definitely a Gen 3.

guys if I order straight from lifeproof do they send a GEN 4 automatically? Im really getting confused on which Generation has the least of problems and what serial numbers to look for???

My guess is it depends on inventory levels? I had a warranty replacement come from them for my Gen 2, and it was another Gen 2. That same day, I took it to BB and exchanged it for a Gen 3 at the store.

This afternoon I was out doing some client calls and was near another BB. Went in and found the highest number possible. In the 272K range, and it is a Gen 4. Doing the water test now.

When going into BB, be sure to check the numbers, they ranged from 4 digit numbers to the 272K I found.

I really hope it works, I loved the LP I had on my 4S.

awesome man! thanks, so the higher the number the more likely it is to be a GEN 4? Is that number for a white or black case?

OK, Just went to Best Buy and picked up a generation 4 (Version 4) case.
The case is in the 283,000 range and has 2 hard clear plastic bumps on the back that replace the black soft foam pad from version 3. I worry that these clear bumps could do damage to the back of the iPhone 5 as they are hard and have sharp edges.

The front has changed as the black foam strip alone the top is now completely gone. There are 2 new soft black foam pieces on the right & left sides that were not in earlier versions. The home button also seems like it has a hard clear bump on the inside. Different material then past versions.

I'm sure there is a version 5 coming sooner or later  Here are the pictures:

Let us know if the plastic bumps mess up the back of your phone. So the pics you posted are of the GEN 4 which has been the version with the least problems right?

Yes, it's the latest version and I have not put my phone into it yet.
I think those bumps could damage the finish of the black iPhone 5.

Maybe some other people could let us know if the bumps damage their finish?;)
I think a couple of pieces of the black foam from the back of version 3 would have been better then these clear bumps.
I'm going to wait a day or so before throwing my phone into this latest version.

Why are these cases not molded right from the get go instead of "Jerry Rigging" and gluing crap to the insides of the cases?

Yes, look for as high a number as you can find. Mine is black. I have a Black one in the 220K range that is gen 3. This new one is black and in the 272K range.

All I can tell you is based on the gen4 with the white iPhone. After using it since yesterday afternoon and intentionally pressing rather hard where the bumps are located, I can't see any signs of wear or marks on the back of the phone. I believe the extremely tight fit helps.

I too just went to my local bb today and picked up version 4, I believe. Case # is 163,xxx in white. All I can say is wow it is a HUGE improvement! Screen feels flush, no proximity or speaker issues as of yet. Back piece has 2 small plastic pieces as people have been posting pics of. Let me also mention I have a full body skin (clear-coat) because it is the thinnest I have tried, as well as a pure screen protector, still fits nice in the lifeproof case. So far so good, I will let you all know if I come across any problems. Thanks to everyone sharing their info about this case and posting pics we all know what to look for, not to mention, the guys in best buy look at me like I'm an idi*t looking ]at the back of all the boxes. :D

Ok so I have gone through about 8 different cases, and have seen 3 different versions. Well today for the hell of it I went to BB to see if LF has sent out a need model, and low and behold another version. The last one I got that has the foam on the back side below the apple logo. This one did fix the speaker vibration and the issues with people hearing there echo on speaker. Sometimes I would get the proximity sensor issue but not a lot, also the pill owing affect due to the foam at the top of the front. Well the one I picked up today is a little different, where the foam below the apple logo it has 2 plastic pieces, where the foam was white is now black and seems a little skinner. On the front there is no longer the foam piece at the top, there little foam pieces inside corners and sides, also the plastic on the home button is skinner. I will link the pictures. I currently am doing the water test and will give some feed back once I try out this version of the case.

Ok so some updates, in the process of me writing this post and receiving this case from Best Buy. I already was returning and waiting for a replacement from lifeproof. I received that replacement today and it is in the 208xxx range which is higher then the so called gen 4 case. I quickly called LP and spoke to a tech, I asked if they knew of all the versions they have put out, and they said yes. So we discussed all the different versions and she was aware of all the versions. Now the one I received today from LP today was what I considered the 3rd Gen. Foam piece in the upper front case, whiteish grey foam piece above the back apple logo, and one black foam piece below the apple logo. Now I have had this type of version before and the main problem was the wavy front screen protector. Now the tech explained to me that this one was the latest version. The one with no foam piece and 2 little plastic pieces was a later version still because she said they did away with all plastic piece due to possible scratches to the phone. She also said that the foam piece in the upper front was there to help with both the mics. They tried it with out but seen there issues. Now I asked about the case numbers and the different generations and her answer was they are manufactured in a few different locations and the batches are generated from that location, so they are not consistent with each NEW version. Now I'm so lost in what is the correct version and what is not to be honest. I have done the water test on this version, spoke on speaker phone, tested the proximity sensor, played the radio, no issues so far. Now the screen seems less wavey, but again I will wait a week or so to see if it flattens out. She did give me a direct email to her and said if I have any issues contact her. She also said that they will continue to make improvements as needed to get the case to perfect condition. Like always I will keep everyone updated and hope everyone will still continues to do the same, so that we can maybe figure out what versions are working and what ones are not. I am sure at some point they will put out one consistent case.

Oh goodness...so were still not sure what GEN is the best and really the numbers aren't really what matters I take it? For all we know the upper numbers may be from an older version???? They need to get this issue fixed asap especially during Christmas.

Did she mean that this latest one with the 2 hard clear plastic pieces was damaging phones? I just put my phone into it and man is it tight but sounds better.

They need to re-tool the machines to made these pieces right without gluing a bunch of junk all over the insides of the cases.

Maybe I should put my 3rd gen back on the 4th gen front ?

I do think that the one with the plastic pieces is very tight fitting. Although I haven't tried the black foam piece version.

They are both tight fitting, and both fix the sound issues. I can promise these are not going to be the last generations. Lets just keep following up and see how these 2 different generations handle.

Those plastic bumps worry me so I put my 3rd gen case back on.
The lower bump lands right on the iPhone printing on the back of the phone and I'm sure these HARD bumps will either wear the finish down or put dents into the back of the phone sooner or later.

I'm sure there will be another 5 generation case soon.
I don't see how they can sell such a rigged up case for $80. and people are happy with it, I'm not. :(

I'll keep an eye out for the next version.:p

So I went to BB this morning and I looked at the LP cases. The pictures below are of a black case with numbers LP000225161. As you can see it has a black foam pad below the 2 black plastic pieces below the plastic window on the inside back. What GEN is this one?

I also looked at a white one with numbers in the 185 range I believe? This one had the 2 plastic pieces under the plastic window on the inside back with what appear/felt to be a rubber square in between the plastic lines? What GEN is this? Its is so confusing!

Here are the pics of the black case

That's a Gen 3 case. I just put my phone back into that case as this version won't damage the back of your phone. I'm afraid the newer one with the hard plastic pieces will.

I might use the front shell from the 4th gen with my 3rd gen back.

I think you may have gotten a rep that just didn't want to tell you that the case they mailed out isn't the newest version (or the newest version before they removed the plastic). It's just a strange occurrence that all of us talking about the numbers on the back and we haven't once found a 220xxx with the plastic, so I think the numbers mean when they were produced and they don't start over at every place that makes them.

I returned a 220xxx case yesterday to BB and found two 256xxx and the one I purchased has the two plastic parts and no foam on the front, this case I feel is more responsive to touches and lays much flatter at the bottom and top (left top corner will hopefully flatten out, but the plastic part on the prox sensor is keeping it up I think)
