Very curious about this case. I have this mad thick otterbox that I'd like to replace. It sticks to my pockets and of course can't actually take a dunk in the water.

Received my LifeProof case...initial thoughts

Well, after lots of waiting and anticipation, I finally received my LifeProof case four days ago, and it's been an interesting experience. Initially, after the excitement of finally getting it, I left it sitting in the box until I had sufficient time to install it properly.

Good thing, too, because it wound up taking about an hour. That's because they have instructions online, and a warranty extension that requires you learn about the case and answer ten questions correctly. I also had to reinstall it twice after finding a tiny particle or two on the screen.

All in all, I think it's a really smart way of making sure users know what the hell they're doing and not just winging it. The case's correct function (i.e. being submerged in water) requires putting the damn thing on right and knowing how to avoid problems. You have to clean the phone really, really well. That's cool with me because I'm a nitpicker about that anyway, but I like that they included a cleaning cloth. Keeping the seam absolutely free of particles is important for ensuring that the case stays waterproof.

So, I install the case. Cool. Now the first thing I notice is the screen protector. It's raised above the screen and looks plasticky. "Wtf," I'm thinking, "this case sucks! I'm sending it back!"

Turns out, after some more reading on the site, there's air that gets between the screen and cover, and it needs to be pressed out. I subsequently discovered that it's easiest to do when installing the case (I think proper installation is super-critical and will affect how it performs). Boom! Suddenly my case became fricking awesome again. I've been using it for the past few days, and I find myself liking more and more as I use it.

The thing is super-light, is easy to get into (and out of) my pocket, isn't bulky and feels solid. It really feels good in the hand. As far as screen usage, you'll probably hear groans about it not being as good as the naked iPhone, but it's an adjustment and you get used to the slight tactile difference pretty quickly. Also, unlike a lot of screen protectors (i.e. the Invisible Shield), the screen looks just as vibrant, without any weird patterning or distortions. It's pretty goddamn cool. Oh, and the case comes with an adapter for waterproof headphones, which is also cool...although I honestly don't ever see myself swimming with my phone...not intentionally, anyway ;-)

So there you have it, folks! I'll attach some photos for your perusing pleasure. Feel free to ask me any questions. And no, I'm not affiliated in any way with anyone, FYI.

I thought the same thing about the screen protector. I've been using mine for a little less than a week and I already have tiny dust particles inside that weren't there when I installed it so expect that. You're right, squeezing the air out does help it lay flat. I still don't like that the Home Button is raised instead of sitting nearly flush with the phone. I can deal with the ear piece vent being raised, but the Home Button too? Makes it really hard for the screen protector to sit flush.

Do you get sound distortion when your music is turned all the way up? Kind of light blasting a cheap pair of speakers?

Here's my mini review

If you follow the line along the bottom of the iOS dock you can see what the raised Home Button does. I don't like it.

Mine came scratched. They're sending me a new front half in a couple weeks.

I really don't like how tight the chart port opening is. I had some knock-off OEM looking apple sync cables and they wouldn't fit. Looked exactly like the Apple ones but I guess were a millimeter too big.

My car stereo cable no longer fits and my stereo supports Pandora which I won't be using until I can get an adapter. Alpine requires I use their stupid cable. An Apple one produces an error. Hopefully that signal can transmit through an adapter.

Oh, and the volume buttons are hard as crap to press.

That description of it taking so long to install sounds pretty awful, especially considering the issue with air remaining in the case after all of your work. Definitely will have to hear a bit more feedback from others on this one.

Lol it's not difficult. You close the case. You put it underwater for an hour with something on top to keep it submerged. No leaks? Sweet. Dry it off. Open the case again. Clean your phone's face really well. Insert in case, close. It's the same thing as an Otterbox except you have to wait an hour to ensure your case is watertight.

If you have any air under the screen, squeeze it with your palm, open and close the charge port door. Takes all of 5 seconds.

Good to hear. The other person saying it took an hour to put it on...who would have the patience?

Lol it takes an hour because you're supposed to put it underwater for an hour to test the seal. You drop it in a sink with something to hold it down and go play Call of Duty.

Wow...so if it fails...and you are off playing call of duty...I shudder to think.

On topic...I hope to see more reviews. I'd love to get this just for beach trips. I've gotten some pretty cool shots of the god daughter underwater with other cameras with underwater housings. And snorkeling as well. But with the iPhone's video capabilities that would be really cool.

Lol you don't put your phone in it. You submerge the empty case and then look for any water droplets after one hour. Then put your phone in it.

Did you see the link to my review above?

I admittedly skimmed the thread. But I'm waiting for a general "like" or dislike consensus.

Like. This case is way cool. Very light, makes the phone about a half inch longer, not much wider. Still fits in my car holder. Coming from a naked screen, the new feel of the screen takes a bit to get used to. Doesn't wipe clean with my teeshirt, but damp cloth with plain water cleans the screen like magic. I like the way the speaker sounds. I never listen to music without headphones anyway. Videos remind me a bit of surround sound. Phone calls don't sound any different except I've had some trouble with reverb on speaker phone that I use a lot. That's a minus for me. Some folks have had a rainbow effect if they don't clean the phone properly before installation. I didn't use particular care. Just wiped the phone well with the included cloth and picked up dust with the same cloth but dampened. Rainbows are pretty much non existent. I got the white case just because I was getting tired of black stuff. You cannot tell it's a black phone, at all. Case cleans up nicely with water. My screen lies pretty flat but does puff up a bit when opening the headphone plug, but lies back down nicely in a few minutes.

Is Lifeproof the type of case that's made to take off & on frequently? I frequently switch back and forth between Otterbox Defender & naked. So I would want a case that can be easily put on and off.

If not, I'll just get one anyways for usage on the beach, pool, etc.

No. Even says so in their vids on their website. I switch up cases constantly so this case, although good in theory, wasn't the case for me. The back piece is like a tupper ware lid so constantly taking it on/off will warp it to some extent. I wound up returning mine FWIW.

This case may be a little too serious for what I was looking for. Looks good though for someone looking for an otterbox alternative.

They dont recommend taking it on and off frequently. Once it's on you wont want to take it off because as soon as you you'll drop your phone *L*. The precision latches will begin to wear out after more than 50 installations and waterproofness may decrease. They will be selling replacement backs and fronts.

For your purpose, you may find this case useful.

Or if you like the idea of putting your iPhone in a custom fit tupperware, you'll love this case.

I found it pretty disappointing: cheesy materials, scratches on the front screen and rear camera lens right out of the box, loss of touch screen responsiveness, difficult to use the silent switch, muffled sound, and a crooked bottom snap closure.

It's an unattractive case in real life, imo.

Oh, and it's $70.

I think it actually looks pretty nice, especially compared to an Otterbox. My screen protector came slightly scratched too, but they are sending me a replacement front half.

I'm really happy for you, but the otterbox has the better screen protector at less than half the price of a lifeproof.

I hated my Otterbox Defender's screen protector. Yes, it was responsive, but it took away all the beauty of the retina screen. The matte finish looks like garbage. Once I took my phone out of the Otterbox, the screen was so vibrant it was like getting an iPhone 4 all over again.

I am far from a LifeProof fanboy. In the other thread I have discussed a few things I am disappointed in, but the LifeProof screen protector is FAR more clear than the Otterbox. The Otterbox lies a little more flush and overall looks better, but it severely hinders the gorgeous retina display.

While the screen protector is clearer on the Lifeproof it does hinder the overall use of the touch screen since it sits above the screen. It isn't as responsive at all. I'd take the Otterbox functionality over the clear but lack of functionality of the Lifeproof.

Case is over-hyped and overall just cheaply made. It is a glorified Tupperware container that is made of cheaper materials.

Honestly, once the screen protector settles down and you squeeze out the air, all of 2 seconds of work, the screen protector is actually pretty responsive. I would still choose it over an Otterbox, but I don't think I'll be keeping this case.

I did manage to get the air out, removing the huge gap between the screen protector and the screen, but that just resulted in the ugly watermark/rainbow effect.

I've already sold my lifeproof... what a waste of time.

No oil affect here. How much did you get for it? Probably selling mine once I get my replacement front and RadTech

You must have installed the thing in a room with zero humidity... or perhaps in space.

$135. Going rate seems to be a little more. I just wanted to get rid of it, and to get a profit at all was nice.

I'm glad I read the real reviews here. Reading the postings on their facebook page doesn't sound the same, so it's hard to believe if they are real customers who purchased the case. Knowing what I've read here, I wouldn't pay $20 for the case, but there is a sucker out there that will pay more since they are still taking preorders. If you don't like it, better sell it quick before more disappointing reviews come out.
