So glad I don't need one, I am already to stingy to get one of those overpriced HDMI adapters.

I agree with a few other people in this thread.

The MagSafe to MagSafe 2 adaptor costs £8... This one is similar to that and is made of plastic, so why the £17 increase?!

Honestly expected a similar price to MagSafe adaptor!

I'm not so much concerned about the price - although it is totally exhorbitant and unreasonable - but the dimensions.

The Lightning to 30-pin (new dock->old dock) adapter is HUGE in height/depth, and will almost certainly affect fit tolerances (i.e. not fit or look like all kinds of crap) with accessories like BOSE and B&O docks.

Earlier this year I bought the (thanks to EU-legislation) micro-USB adapter to charge my iPhone in my car using existing charger, and you can see how much better/low profile this is in comparison, especially useful when using a sat nav cradle. Even the new Lightning to micro-USB adapter is sleeker.

WTF is all that plastic needed for with Lightning?

To illustrate:

OLD Micro-USB to 30-pin adapter (<10mm)

Though the price is kinda high, technology is what it is. I mean look at 8 tracks to cassettes to Cds for example. You know eventually any tech will become obsolete in time. This will be an expensive time period as we move from the 30 pin to this one.

Apples and oranges. Those were moving between technologies, this isn't. This is changing a dang cable! This isn't implementing a completely new technology like casetter->CD or VHS->DVD. This is only a new connector using old tech. They are blatantly money grabbing plain and simple. Personally I think they will make less money than if they just priced it at $10 that was rumored. Many many more people will just wait for the knock-offs.

As much as I dislike the price point what I really hate is that it also will not support video and audio. At 30$ it should be an all in one solution to the problem.

R we really surprised?

This is apple after all, they don't use standardized adapters on their portable items like iPads, iPhones, and iPods. Like USB or FireWire! I would bet apple got a nice kickback from companies that sell docks because now you have to buy a new one when they come out! The lightning to 30 pin adapter does not support audio or video out so you are basically buying an adapter to your charging cable for 30 bucks! STUPID! and not to mention greedy! I will stick with the 4S phone instead of disabling ever dock in my house! Thanks crapple!

I'm kind of annoyed that if I upgrade to the iPhone 5, I'd have to spend $100 in dock cables just to get the same convenience I have now. I have a charger at work, at home, in my car, and one in my travel bag. The cords were accumulated over about 7 years of owning iPods and even the oldest one still works great on my iPhone 4.

I think Apple really should have thrown us a bone and included one adapter with every new iPhone 5. The cost to them would have been negligible and it would have generated a lot of good will.

Also why don't they make the MicroUSB to Lightning adapter available in the US store? I'd love to buy one and keep it in my travel bag; it would let me borrow pretty much any non-iPhone using friend's charger.

You do realize Apple's zeal for aesthetics cuts both ways? Why make an adapter svelte when you can encourage people to upgrade by making it butt-ugly, not to mention unusable for those with tight tolerances?

I heard this was going to be 10 and 3 for 29 but jeez one for 29 apple will make a killing.

When you've been a Loyal Apple Customer as long as I have, you come to expect Apple to screw you with obscene pricing.

Cue the haters...
(yes I know their in business to make money)

I simply speak the truth in a matter of fact way. I'm not complaining nor criticizing. Fact Is: Apple didn't get to where they are today by charging _reasonable_prices_.

They got here by what others have called "Apple Tax".

Apple is not a welfare program.
No. they are the worlds most successful company that just changed a cable and are charging a ridiculous price for compatibility with their own existing cables that do the same thing.

Apple often gets slammed undeservedly and I understand why people defend them. but in this case then $29 is simply too expensive. It's ok to admit that.

Yup a rip off..the new iPhone 4GS "5" should come with the adaptor and a dock like the first generation iPhone..after all apple just got a FAT check from Samsung..but I like my GS3 better so no iPhone 4GS "5" for me..keeping my iPhone 4 :) enjoy your new iPhone 4GS "5" everyone..

I can easily afford $29, but I refuse to purchase this because psychologically, nobody wants to be ripped off. How can you ignore the crux of the frustration with this, is not because $29 is a lot of money. You do realize people here buy the actual phone for hundreds of dollars. These are the last people who would proclaim $29 is too much money.

Your post is irrelevant, and I find it bemusing that you don't seem to know what the definition of a rip-off is. People are frustrated with Apple because they feel that Apple are trying to rip them off. And finally, if Apple wanted a good return on their investment, they would have priced it much lower, because, as of now, many people will wait for the cheaper knockoffs, and no one will purchase the $29 version.

I do know the definition of a rip off and this is not one. Apple is telling you exactly what the product is and how much it costs. There is no rup off involved. You get to choose, buy it or not. I'm sorry, but you have no idea what the definition of a rip off is. If no one buys the $29 version, Apple will lower the price. It's how the free market works.

Hey everyone!!! Look at THIS guy!!! He doesn't think paying $30 for a $2 piece of plastic is THAT BIG A DEAL!!! We should really all take advice from this gentleman and his superior spelling/typing ability. I mean, if HE said "their" is spelled "thier", then who are we to complain!? We don't even have JOBS! But at least we'll have a nice day while getting financially ****ed up the @$$ by the most profitable company in the history of technology.

How cool. I found someone to correct my typos.

hint: go away.

Apple is not a welfare program.

You can always tell the people who have never run a business.

Apple kept the same adapter for 10+ years while everyone else as gone from Mini USB to Micro USB in half that time. Yet somehow Apple is the greedy company.

it will have to at least do audio for everyone's home docks and car kits etc. if it doesn't then Apple has completely and utterly both lost the plot and designed an utterly useless piece of tat!!!!

If it's too expensive, don't buy it. My goodness, it's amazing the silly things peiople get there panties in a bunch over. It's $29. Get over it.

I think a lot of people are actually worried about what it will actually do. If it only charges for $29 then as per my post above yours, apple has lost the plot!

Luckily I'm not getting the iPhone 5 right away. My hope is that when I do purchase it, I can easily find a third party adaptor on eBay or something. I refuse to pay $30 for a silly little adaptor.

What people dont seem to realize is Apple already got bad press because of changing the connector. For making money the best way is not always to rip of people but instead make them happy, e.g. by just including an adapter or sell them at a reasonable price.

What is so complicated about this?

Charging blocks will work as long as they use a new USB cable with the Lightning connector at one end or an old USB cable with the 30 pin to Lightning adapter at the other end.
