My iphone charger does charge my iPad, and my ipad charger charges my iPhone, with no detrimental effects. Perhaps you had a bad phone, or a bad charger. There is no way charging with either charger will ever damage your phone under normal circumstances.

My guess is user error.

My guess is user error.

Plug in and charge.....what 'user error'.

The ipad charger ruined TWO of my iPhones (4 & 4S) and both had to be replaced at the Apple Store.

Volts, Watts.....whatever. you know what I meant.

Word of advice to anyone reading this - BEWARE OF USING THE IPAD CHARGER WITH YOU IPHONE!!!

There is a reason Apple doesnt use just '1 universal charger'. Use the charger that came with your device :)

What about mixing and matching the part of the charger that plugs into the wall or lighter outlit? Can I buy any USB to lighter adaptor and plug and USB cord into it and be safe? Some of my older cords plug into a bigger AC adaptor, can I use those with a new lightening cord?

Actually the iPad charger is virtually their universal charger.... says so on the website. The only reason they don't include it with the iPhone is because it's a LOT more expensive to make iPad chargers than it is to make the very simple iPhone charger....

Here's a link AGAIN to Apple's website showing the iPad charger is COMPATIBLE with all iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch's. In fact I am linking to the NEW iPad charger that is 12w instead of 10w.

STOP passing off false data. Maybe you have a bad charger in some way or a bad cable. Either way, there is enough evidence on these forums and Apple's own documents to prove you are wrong.

Yes you can virtually use ANY wall adapter that has a USB charging port. However, with that said: Most of those wall adapters only put out the Maximum amount of Amps that a USB port can which is .5A (500ma). The iPhone charger actually puts out double that at 1A so if you use one of those wall USB chargers it will probably take twice as long to charge....

Gar! ME iPhone charges fine with the iPad charger. Has since I first bought iPad. Also, iPad charger used to be the iPhone charger when it was first released. GAR!

Hi. I work on accessories that charge iPods and iPhones. You don't know what I know. Everybody who has attempted to enlighten you is correct, and you are completely wrong. You got duds, dude. Unless your iPad charger was broken in the first place, it could not possibly have damaged your iPhones (in which case it's damaging your iPad, too). Stop telling people otherwise, please, and thank you.

As for the topic: yes, this is completely fine, and I use it all the time on all iPhones and iPods and iPads so I don't have to keep swapping which charger I have plugged into my outlet.

Kind of a crazy side note, but is it just me or is it crazy to see ALL the devices that can be charged by the iPad charger? I mean basically the compatibility is everything from the 4th Gen "Classic" iPod, all of the iPod Nanos, the short lived iPod Mini, all of the iPod Shuffles, and that's not even pointing out it can do every single iOS device ever made! Good grief. They have 38 devices that are compatible with it!!!

I know, they all just use USB charging, but it's just kind of cool to see all the different devices lined up. I mean my first 4-5 cell phones all required their own chargers and now you can practically charge anything with the same charger these days....

That's absolute rubbish. The sooner you realise it's rubbish and that the overwhelming majority is correct the sooner we can move on. You're the only person here blaming the iPad charger and no one else here seems to have had any problems including me. Either you did something wrong or you had faulty iPhones or a charger.

OK, thanks for the info.

Call it what you want.
The 10v charge of the iPad wall charger ruined TWO of my iPhones.
None before using the ipad wall charger ever experienced faster battery drop, none since I stopped using that wall charger have experienced rapid battery drop.

10v going into something that is only supposed to take a 5v is the issue.

Its the same reason the iPhone charger doesnt charge your iPad :D

They are 5Volt chargers, not 10Volt. Apple lists compatibility.

You don't understand how electronics work.

Source: The AC to USB Adapter
Load: iPhone, iPad

The source is a basic 5 Voltage supply, and that's all it does. DC power relationship derived from Ohm's Law must apply, physics.
Power = current * voltage
Voltage = current * resistance(load)
Apply a resistive load across a voltage source, the Source's job per the laws of physics is to provide the current necessary to satisfy the second equation.

Until it exceeds the first equation, the power envelop.

But it's all based on the (Load). If the Load is only designed to draw 1A of current, it won't draw more, and will only use that much of the available power. The source won't shove the extra into it.

Right, I knew what you meant:

"THE IPAD CHARGER WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT DAMAGE THE IPHONE!!!!"

That's what you "meant". Right?

Right/Wrong... whatever. Doesn't matter to this guy lol.

This is a perfect example of how dangerous internet MIS-information can be. A rumor like this starts and people not smart enough to realize it's BS go out and pay for a brand new charger they don't need.

IT IS 100% OK TO USE THE IPAD CHARGER WITH THE IPHONE
