Ohhh this sounds like Apple’s Monopoly is working ….. another antitrust case in 3..2..
Creating and enforcing a privact rule on your platform is not a monopoly lol. Does the fact that Apple doesn’t allow sensitive information to be shared like Social Security numbers and credit card numbers make them monopoly also?

I was trying to be ironic…. But feel free to educate us…. what about all google is planning for 2022 regarding privacy you want me to know?
Well, I couldn’t tell ... maybe put a /s in? ;)

google is changing cookies and ad IDs in Chrome next year, surprised I haven’t seen the latest here on MR but google for it...

LinkedIn doesn't really need the IDFA since it's a service you log in to, so they're fully able to track you without it.

But cute of them to try to score brownie points with this announcement.
I think you misunderstand IDFA. The point is it allows them to track you across the web. You also log into Facebook, but they would like to track you anywhere, also outside Facebook.

Just curious, are any Apple made apps tracking users in such a manner. I don't see any warnings that they have been tracking me outside the app like I get from other apps. Either they are not tracking at all or they are exempt from telling you they are tracking you. I would rather know if they are at all. Are they up front about what goes on in the background of their apps like they expect others to be?

I love that Apple is doing this but my inner conspiracy-theorist says that these scumbag companies are rolling over too easy and have just found a different way to track us.
I don't think they have any other choice but to roll over. Facebook *is* complaining heavily, but they have the lawyers and lobbyists to potentially get their way or harm Apple in response.

Historically, LinkedIn has been one of the more egregious offenders with regards to misusing their access to your information and your devices. It's good that these changes Apple is making are helping to clamp down on companies' bad behavior; but I dumped the LinkedIn app long ago.
Yeah, they're really abusive with emails and with forcing you to sign up just to view profiles. Clearly meant to shamelessly farm data, but considering that their user-base is people often desperately seeking jobs, this makes sense. I'm still glad they helped _me_ get a job, unlike FB, which is just a waste of time.

I think it was mild sarcasm. People claim Apple has a monopoly on the App Store, and a side effect of this is that only apps that follow the privacy policy can be installed. These companies would likely have switched stores if an alternative was available. Instead, they are putting less of our data at risk by not collecting it.

good, it's working :)
But something new will be coming, no way they are all giving up ad revenues :(
They can and will still receive ad revenues. This just means less tracking. So the ads you get are less personalized.

Genuine question - Why should we be so happy for apple to be reigning in this IDFA, and not upset that they provide this info to companies in the first place and have been for years?

If Apple really cared about privacy and tracking, where is the switch to disable it all globally? Turn off all IDFA, SDKs, APIs. But naw, Apple still wants all this info about you.
IDFA was implemented to facilitate ad groups. The problem is over time they went overboard and started aggressively harvesting and compiling data on customers and using it in unintended ways. Part of why Apple is slower at developing Siri and other AI technology is because they anonymize much of what they collect because they have a different purpose.

It is interesting that so far only facebook has fought against this and other companies have agreed its the right thing to do. I like how apple is getting more and more privacy focused. As far as the comment above about using google as the default search, i do disagree with that but it is super easy to change. Giving people the information and power to change is whats important.

Facebook and other advertisers that have spoken out against App Tracking Transparency are concerned about Apple's changes because many do not believe that users will consent to being tracked across apps for ad personalization purposes.

this is the statement of the year! They are upset because we will have the ability to finally consent or not!

Yea, I’m just concerned they’re gonna come up with something else that’s gonna take years to remove again... and I ignore ads incl personalized just as much as I possibly can...

Is it any wonder... for years now, decades even, we have been sold the promise that by giving away our data en masse and not asking any questions about who is collecting it, how it is being used and of course 'why', we would get 'personalized' ads that are more 'relevant' and even with reduced 'frequency'. If anything, the ads have gotten less relevant, more frequent and even more annoying. It's not working nearly as well as one would hope considering the underlying technology and data available, but 'they' just keep wanting to double down over and over and hope we turn a blind eye.

I've been involved in the technical implementation of targeted and interactive advertising (and still am peripherally) in a variety of capacities since the dot com era and I still get a chuckle at the 'click on Jennifer Aniston's sweater during a Friends episode and have it delivered to your home' nonsense that was (and still is surprisingly in various forms) proffered as a more desirable experience than having ads pooped in between content segments while you head to the kitchen to raid the fridge or visit the water closet to evacuate your nether regions.

My take ... because of the potential for Backlash, both Linkedin & Twitter have recently decided to sit on the sideline for now, & watch what happens with Facebook's efforts.

A side-lesson from Twitter's comments yesterday was that New Players / Entrants into their markets are now in a much more level playing field than before !

In other words, new Players / Entrants will very likely emerge !

That could be the BIGGEST UN-intended consequence of it ALL !

NO way did Apple's Mgmt plan it that way.

My take: in no way is this "levelling the playing field".

What Google et al are doing with all these "privacy initiatives" is kicking the ladder out from underneath them so it is even harder for competition to get close to them.

The big tech companies are becoming very apprehensive about competition acquisitions (preferring to stick to complementary acquisitions), if they continue as they have in the past they will attract more calls for antitrust investigations and the last thing they want is people looking into how they do business.

So what they are doing now is poisoning the well, turning cookies into a dirty word on their own terms, and ensuring that their competition and any new market players in the advertising space have zero chance of getting to use the same tactics that brought them their successes.

They are effectively locking in their position and creating chaos in the advertising marketplace, in which they will stand alone as a stable entity that can weather the storm.

I think you misunderstand what IDFA is. It’s for tracking the users device. Logged in or not to a service.
If LinkedIn wants to cut a deal with Facebook there is nothing stopping them from both tracking you and exchanging info about you. LinkedIn requires you to be logged in to use it in any meaningful way.
