Apparently, after coming back from sleep state, Lion will freeze when attempting to run flash videos, where only the mouse cursor will move but nothing is clicakble. Cannot access Activity Monitor nor Force Close. The only solution is to hard reset with the power button.

I've experienced this myself multiple times, and so have others. If you're experiencing it too, please report at the provided links to Apple Support.

Hopefully patch/fix is on the way...

EDIT: Report on TUAW: http://www.tuaw.com/2011/07/24/lion-bug-some-imacs-locking-up-after-playing-video/

I think I experienced this with a developer preview of adobe flash, but I think it was an upgrade. If it's an upgrade and you have this problem, then that's the reason. It doesn't do that anymore with me. Maybe even try re-installing the latest version. 3rd Party Plug-ins mostly haven't been released yet, still in beta. Unity Web Player 3.5 is coming out this week. Panda 3D still doesn't have it. Also, I have 10.7.2 on my computer and it fixes some of my problems too.

Got a new iMac last week but have not redeemed the code yet to upgrade to Lion. And I won't until I see that a lot of Lions issues have been sorted. SL is running flawlessly on my system at the moment and it's lightning fast. I'm not risking it yet.

I get this issue (complete system freeze when watching flash; can move cursor, but nothing is clickable; have to hard restart by pushing & holding power button). I have a long-in-the-tooth early 2007 C2D MBP; my boot drive was erased prior to Lion install.

AND, this comes up for me w/out sleep mode being invoked prior to watching flash. So $%#@ annoying. Damn flash.... I'm gonna try the beta version of Adobe flash & see if that helps.

Glad ive had click2flash installed since i bought my mac in 2008 and dont see ANY flash content at all.

My ipad doesnt see flash, my iphone didnt see flash and ive disabled flash in my desktop browsers and android phone.

If a site "requires" flash, i take my business elsewhere.

RIP Flash, your not going to be missed, and my battery powered devices are much happier without you.

Hi Steve Jobs, I did not realize you were on MacRumors. What do you think about jailbreaking?

I have no problem with flash. The only freezing that occurs for me is when I access video files from an external drive. It freezes the system for a milisecond. LOL.

What.....is this not Apple support? :D

I would if i had the issue. Which i don't. *touch wood*

My point being, it plagues many more people than the 50 or so that replied in this thread. It's a widespread issue with Lion.

What year is your iMac? Is it upgraded to Lion? Are you sure you're doing the right steps to reproduce?

This issue seems to particularly affect 2011 iMacs that upgraded to Lion (though Air users, and Pro users have reported this problem too).

After putting your computer into full sleep (meaning the hard drive is in sleep mode, not just your display), wake up your computer, and run either Flash, QuickTime or iTunes videos. It should freeze the computer.

If you're on a 2011 iMac, upgraded to Lion, and followed these steps correctly, and didn't experience the freeze, then kudos. Keep on knockin' that wood. ;)

My iMac is a mid 2010. With lion and like the song, it always sleeps.

Must be a 2011 issue

I (and more people I am sure) already reported this even before retail release. I am sure it will be fixed in 10.7.1....Until then I just disabled auto-sleep and use shutdown (which feels weird :D). It really seems to happen only after wake from sleep mode.

My understanding is that they skipped .1 update, and are seeding .2 updates to developers. Unfortunately, one developer on .2 says the problem still exists.

Maybe .3?

It's good to hear that this was reported, but sad to see this issue not fixed. It's more than just Flash. QT and iTunes videos will freeze the computer too. Don't know how this was acceptable to Apple. =T

Your understanding is incorrect. As I explained in a previous reply, Apple has provided an early seed of the 10.7.2 branch with just iCloud related changes. They are working on 10.7.1 simultaneously, which is why 10.7.2 doesn't include things that you might expect to find in 10.7.1 (i.e. misc. bug fixes). 10.7.1 will still be released relatively soon and is very likely to include a fix to this problem.

I repeat: they are not skipping 10.7.1.

Nah. .2 seed is just for iCloud testing for now. It contains functions that .1 will not contain that is why they skipped number. They will not skip numbers for end-user releases. I am sure .1 update will be out pretty soon. I actually even think that they started developing .1 update before retail release to avoid additional delay for testing. Again all this is my opinion about that, but I think it is actually close to real situation.

EDIT: too slow :)

Ah, I missed that post entirely. My mistake. Thanks for clarifying. Hopefully .1 addresses this issue.

Edit: Thanks Titan for clarifying also.

Having the same issue. I've had it happen with flash video as well as watching videos via iTunes and the finder preview (spacebar). I've had Lion installed since release and I've had the problem happen at least 10 times now. It's extremely annoying. There doesn't seem to be anything in particular that sets it off. Just random times when watching videos.

Hope this gets patched up soon or back to Snow Leopard for me. :(

I think the problem can also happen if the computer never sleeps, it's just that sleeping makes it happen sooner.

I can verify this. I've had freezes occur at any time. I've been using a lot of handbrake the past week and there are also issues with the audio and video being out of sync.

We keep bashing flash... which is fine with me, but I have had this issue happen on my 6/11 iMac just upgraded to Lion:

- trying to play youtube video
- trying to play movie stored on local hard drive via iTunes
- trying to play music stored on local hard drive via iTunes
- trying to play a music video sotred locally on iTunes
- trying to play music and movies stored on USB drive
- and when the computer hasn't been in sleep mode

So... if we are amongst friends (iTunes and Lion), I would expect better! I sold my wife on this "investment" after years of building my own Window machines because honey, Steve says "it just works"! So, please fix soon before it happens to her and I get my butt kicked!:D

No problems here on my late 2009 MacBook Pro. I rarely shut the computer down at all (maybe once a week) and the rest of the time I usually just shut the lid and let it sleep. I have had no issues wrt flash or Quicktime videos at all. I also never had the other issue people reported either: waking from sleep and WiFi dropping off.

I have yet to have my 2011 iMac freeze while playing videos before putting the computer to sleep. Interesting.

However, it's a guarantee freeze after having it in full sleep.
