Hmm, ok maybe calling it Vista was jumping the gun :p

But seeing as this problem was known before general release and apparently reported, i find it strange that they didnt bother fixing it.

Well, the bug (if it is one) seems to be quite elusive.
For me, it shows mostly when my MBP switches graphics cards.
But seeing that you guys too have problems that are most likely related to the sandy bridge and/or graphics drivers i believe we might be in the same boat here.
By now, Apple are no doubt aware of the issue, and I suggest going back to SL for now (like I did) until we have confirmed that this is fixed by a point release.

I've experienced a complete freeze 3x in the past 2 days. I have also experienced several freezes that take 1-2 seconds to remedy themselves.

I have a new MBA 13" i7 with no flash installed.

Note: I intentionally did not install flash until I could really flush out new h/w and a new o/s without apple pointing to anything not their own.

They have occurred under two conditions:
- when invoking Mission Control
- when using a two finger gesture to swipe between 'spaces'

I also have momentary pauses, of about 2 seconds, almost every time I move an email message to a folder by a right click and brining up the folder menu with 'move to'. This rarely happens if I simply drag the message to the folder in the left hand pane.

Last, I have had a couple minor instances where things show garbled (such as the upper left hand apple icon).

So, I'm thinking these are all related to some type of video issue in lion.

Hope this is helpful to those much more in the know than I.....

I am also having this freezing issue:

  • I am NOT using mission control (maybe F11 to hide all windows if that counts)
  • This is on a 2007 Mac Pro
  • This is an Nvidia GFX card
  • The mouse moves but nothing else
  • iTunes continues to play until the end of the current track
  • The system recovers after 15 minutes
  • The only thing I've found in common with others is SSD system drive

They seem to be reporting a similar, but not identical issue. For a start this is has nothing to do with flash for me.

I've updated the Nvidia cuda driver to 4.0.21 which seems to have fixed the problem for me so far.

For me, I think it is Flash issue. Whenever my Lion was frozen, I was playing Flash video.

I Salute You Tozzi

Well, let me put it this way:
It's very annoying to those among us who do have problems to be told by ppl that we either imagine it, or that it has to do with some screwy setup we have.
There are some die-hard fanboys on this forum who think that everyone who has a problem with new Apple software releases is in some way responsible for it himself.
This is not the truth, some of us would really love to have Lion up and working as intended, however, we don't have such joy.
Experiencing showstopping bugs is bad enough; people telling us that it's our own fault, even though it clearly isn't, are just rubbing salt in our wounds.
I am sick of it. Clearly, Apple have screwed up on this in some way, and it affects only a small number of people, but those few people are affected badly by it nonetheless.
Yes, it will be fixed, and if it is due to faulty hardware, it will be fixed as well. But right now, we are suffering from it and we want it solved.

You hit the nail on the head Tozzi. Apple claims to be better than Microsoft...PROVE IT! Spending all this money on iCraps and getting treated like we must be doing something wrong is unacceptable. My 2011 iCrap freezes constantly since the upgrade to 10.7.1. I have to reboot 7-8 times per day. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN UNDER SNOW LEOPARD!

To all those yahoos that claim Lion is stable...where did you go to school? I took the time to get my IT degree (with a 4.0 GPA), so I know what I'm talking about when I say Lion is crap. Put that damn cat to sleep! As far as it being worse than Vista? Any Microsoft O.S., even 3.1, would be an astronomical improvement over this crap!

You realize you are the only one with a computer freezing 7-8 times per day. Just reinstall the OS or if thats too much to do then have it replaced by Apple. Obviously your combination of software and hardware are not playing along together. Just fix your dud of a machine and stop moaning. It is not a widespread issue if you are having to reboot that often.

Just because it has bugs, does not make it Vista. Lion has far less bugs than did Snow Leopard.

Everyone on this forum realizes that if you install a new OS right after it comes out, there will be bugs and issues. Same with any OS.

Are you kidding me? Snow Leopard's bugs didn't crash you system, freeze ever 20 minutes, lag endlessly....

I confess, I am at the lower end of the system requirements, but Apple is generally good about those numbers. Normally, a model or so below can actually run the updated software. I also have my Ram upgraded.

Considering Lion is more or less built on Snow Leopard, mostly lip gloss, etc. it shouldn't have such a drastic shift in performance.

I sick of the spinning beach ball, and lag! I click next track in itunes, maybe later it will change it. Annoying all around, and for the lackluster new features, I'm sorry I upgraded.

Rosetta apps ran smoother! No wonder they took roestta away. Lion can't even run itself.

I get a system freeze/kernel panic the vast majority of the times I watch video (QT/Perian, VLC or M PLayerX) when booted from Lion. When I boot from my SL install on external fw drive, no issues whatsoever. I'm guessing Apple will sort out these Lion issues for people w/ newer machines, but people like me using older (in my case, early 2007 2.16GHz C2D. max 3 GB RAM) ones are screwed.

What have you done to try stop it from crashing? Downloaded a maintenance program? (unfortunately every computer needs maintenance once in a while, its like humans sleeping).. Tried repairing permissions? Rescanned the spotlight index? Tried a new account and see if your still getting freezing there? Reinstalled the operating system? (I would personally recommend Onyx for maintenence. I have been using it for 6 years.)

I have been operating with Lion since the week it came out (apart from a glitch with launchpad which seems to of rectified) there haven't been any issues, I hardly ever turn my macbook pro off, and keep Safari/iTunes and more open 24/7. However, I keep my computer in shape, I regularly maintain it, and check that everything is in order, when there are issues I don't come to an online forum n complain about it, I log into my admin account which I have created specifically for such problems and go through steps to check everything is ok. I have been using macs for 6 Years already and have done a similar process since I started doing so. You don't need a degree to know stuff about computers.

Tbh you just sound like you thought Mac OSX was gonna be a breeze, put some process into your computing, you say you did an IT Degree, time to start using it then my friend.

If you are getting Kernel Panics that normally points toward a driver issue, i would recommend starting a new account and seeing if that still crashes, if it doesn't then that means theres sommat wrong with your 'main' account. If your getting crashes in the new account however, that might point to sommat else. Should try to go through some steps of Trial and Error, and see where that goes. :)

I upgraded my new (in May 11) 27" iMac form SL to Lion about a week ago. I am starting to like some of how it works, but I too have had a couple of inexplicable freezes and could not even access "Force Quite" for the apps that were frozen. All I could do was a power re-boot.

you should take a look in your log files and see what is the exact problem. open console.app and watch the logfiles!

Well... any news about this issue? We are on 10.7.2 update already, and my Mac Pro Early 2009 freezes about 3 time per day, even with single tasks like deleting files on network volumes (?!?!?!?!). Maybe because I'm using spaces? Anyway, no matter wht you are doing, it can freezes at any time. Well, I did a second clean install of Lion to be sure, and there is the freeze again!
Any "construcitive" tip?
