ok so heres the deal i had the same problem with my computer. i installed lion and when it wouldn't stay awake from sleep i restarted my computer and ended up having to bring my 2011 macbook pro to the apple store because it wouldn't turn back on. they ended up replacing my motherboard. when i got home it worked fine until it went back to sleep for a while and then started doing the same thing, i was so frustrated. i went back did a little complaining and to their head tech guy to talk to me. he said that when the computer wakes up like that and goes to a black screen that it is trying to start the screen saver. mine was doing this because i had the screen saver set to come on after 20 mins of inactivity. i guess the new lion system assigns a screen saver to come on automatically even if you haven't set one up, this is why the screen goes black because it is trying to show the screen saver that you haven't even set up yet and doesn't really know what to do lol. so the tech guy set the screen saver to come on never and i haven't had problems with it since. i really hope this helps because i know how frustrating and inconvenient this is...

I think there are several variations of this problem. I just tested this... and it didn't fix the problem =/ - Thanks for sharing though!

The problem that I believe is being addressed here, is that every single time I close the lid on my computer and let it sleep, and open it back up, it will stay on for a second and then go back to sleep. I have to wait like 6 seconds and then hit a key to turn it back on. Then it stays on.

lion is SO not ready to be released. -__-

FWIW my iMac has similar behavior.

It wakes up from sleep all day; while I am at work; and works for about a minute a most and then it spins down. I don't lose the screen in my case but I know the drives stop and the wifi turns off. Its almost as if it didn't clear a flag to sleep properly.

As to how do I know the drives stopped, because moving a bunch of files to trash stopped mid move.

well I'm having all other kinds of issues too from lion... including but not limited to it not being able to support HDMI of any kind. - Really making me mad.

I'm reinstalling either tomorrow or wednesday so I'll update afterwards.

Update:

SO, I finally broke down and did the reinstall (due to other incredibly annoying issues like HDMI output crashing the mac on every attempt, and it constantly logging me out) and I'm glad to report that...:

A clean install of Snow Leopard, followed by an upgrade to Lion did the trick. Granted that it now takes 53 seconds to fully go to sleep after closing the lid with 8gigs of ram (which it used to on SL, but hadn't for quite awhile). It still wakes right up after you open it and doesn't fall back to sleep.

It would also appear that HDMI output works as expected now as well as the constant logging out has disappeared. I would strongly recommend to anyone who upgraded from a moderately-used version of SL to reinstall. It will greatly change your lion experience.

King of the jungle is back! :)

EDIT: (08/12/11)

So, I don't know what the deal is, but I haven't really done anything but yet after my initial setup (going through system preferences and setting things how I like them and installing all the usual programs), it's now back to falling asleep Every time I wake it up. Except now it still takes 1 full minute to go to sleep after it falls back asleep so it now puts me behind by like a minute and a half each time.

Thankfully, I took a Ton of time machine images so I'm restoring right now and I'll see if I can't pinpoint a specific program or setting that might be causing this. - Also, graphics is a lot better than before, but it still freezes on lion using HDMI every now and then. Man does lion need some work....

Solved!

Alright so, after extensive troubleshooting... here is what I came up with:

I narrowed it down to an extension I had installed on my mac to replace InsomniaX since it isn't compatible with snow leopard (although I believe that having insomniaX might cause it to do it too....)

I had installed InsomniaT on my computer ages ago, and that was the culprit. After uninstalling that, I sleep normally. It appears it wasn't even Apple's problem at all. Can anyone else confirm if they have insomniaT (or X) and if removing this solves the problem for them?

I have this problem on my 2011 17" MBP, and I fixed it (sort of) by turning off Wifi. As it's connected to Ethernet most of the time, it's not a big deal to me, but I can see this as not really being a "fix" for a lot of users.

I do have InsomniaT installed though, and hadn't thought to try uninstalling it, but I'll give that a try when I get home.

I'm having the exact same issue on my new MacBook Air; hopefully (along with Mission Control) this will be fixed in 10.7.1/2.

It looks like InsomniaT may have been the problem in my case too. I had it installed a while back, but then decided to uninstall it via the trash. So I thought Insomnia was gone from my MBP.

Regardless, when I tried to install version 3.0.2 a few minutes ago, the installer said that an older version of InsomniaT was found on my boot drive and that I had to remove the older app first. I did that using Insomnia's uninstaller included in the download, not simply trashing it this time. When the uninstaller confirmed that all older files were removed I left it at that. I did not continue to install 3.0.2.

So far, no more blackouts after waking... :)

Fixed

Awesome!
Didn't realize so many other people used InsomniaT. I uninstalled it using the 3.0.2 uninstaller and removed it from my preference pane after and voila, no more sleeping problem :D:D:D
I tried upgrading to 3.0.2 afterwards, but the bug came back in a new way (instead of immediately sleeping again afterwards, it stays awake for about 5 seconds where I can move the mouse..and then suddenly I have no control over the mouse/keyboard anymore, then the screen blacks out, and the laptop goes back to sleep, in that order, in 5-10 second intervals between each step) Guess I'm not using insomnia anymore.
Thanks to all those who replied!

After the Lion install my Mac Pro (NOT MacBook Pro) started to go back to sleep within seconds of waking up from sleep. I noticed that it is always is doing a Time Machine backup when it goes back to sleep. So the sequence is:

Mac Pro Goes to sleep.
I wake up Mac Pro.
Mac Pro starts Time Machine backup.
Mac Pro sleeps.
I wake up Mac Pro and Time Machine backup continues and machine behavior is normal.

Setup:
Early 2009 Mac Pro 2.93 Quad, 16GB ram, OCZ Vertex II SSD, Lion 10.7.1
PleaseSleep upgraded to the Lion compatible version.

Note:
I had sleep issues with my 2009 Mac Pro shortly after buying it. PleaseSleep solved the problem and I was happy! PleaseSleep stopped working properly after the Lion upgrade but the update seemed to work correctly other than the "wake twice" problem.

Solution for me

I only turn off the internet sharing in preference system and now i open the lid, the mac wake up and don't sleep...:D

My Mac Pro 2010 with Lion does the same thing. It wakes then it sleeps and I need to rewake it. It does not do it all the time but most of the time. TM doesn't get a chance to backup because the TM disk is not connected. So I can rule that out. Something seems to be going wrong somewhere and I can't find a trace of it in the system logs. The only thing it says is "previous sleep cause: 5" which leads to nothing if you Google it. Things like repairing the disk and permissions do not solve it. From what I found most people are unable to get it resolved so I guess we'll have to wait for an update or something.

My MacBook Pro 2010 does not do this, it just works fine but has a similar software configuration as the Mac Pro 2010 has.

Setup:
Early 2009 Mac Pro 2.93 Quad, 16GB ram, OCZ Vertex II SSD, Lion 10.7.1
PleaseSleep upgraded to the Lion compatible version.
Mine: the cheapest Mac Pro 2010 version upgraded to 12GB of mem, the 5870 GPU and an OCZ Vertex ssd. Lion is running with all the updates and without something like PleaseSleep (it sleeps just fine, it is only the waking twice that is the issue; in SL it worked normally).

Edit: looking at pmset -g log returns all the sleep/wake stuff but I notice something odd. There are many occasions where a sleep entry follows another sleep entry. You'd expect a wake between them. I checked my log for today and I found the time when I put the Mac Pro in sleep. The next one is sleep and then a wake. Before the second sleep I woke my Mac Pro but this isn't in the log, it just misses a part. Both sleep say AC-power button but only the first one is done by pressing the power button. The second one was not something I triggered, it just occurred. Somehow Lion thinks somebody hit the power button so it will sleep again, quicker than it could write the wake to the log or something.

Add me to the list. I have two brand new 15" MBP's (bought within a week of each other). One came with Snow Leopard and one came with Lion. The one that came with Snow Leopard I did the OS upgrade to, but it has never had the problem. The one that came with Lion is having this issue.

My wife will open her computer and the screen stays black. The unit is not responsive to the trackpad or any keys. She will then shut the computer, wait a few seconds, and then open it back up. The screen immediately comes back on, but a few seconds later it goes to sleep. This time it will wake back up with the keyboard or touchpad.

+1
I've been experiencing a similar problem here with my mid 2009 macbook pro.

None of the workaround (except those 3rd part utilities, which I've not tried any) mentioned in this thread solved the problem in my case.

My own workaround is that when it goes to sleep by itself again, I plug off the magsafe plug in again. It will wake and stay up.

Hope it helps!

I turned off all sharing (printer, files, internet) and that seemed to do the trick. Fortunate for me I don't use any of those utilities, but you never know what's in store tomorrow.

Turn off Airport, close the lid, wait for sleep. Open the lid and the problem doesn't appears. I don't know why but it works. But I don't like this method and so I've installed InsomniaT (not InsomniaX) and my MBP doesn't goes to sleep (so Insomnia does its work) but not always. Sometimes the MBP goes to sleep anyway and I don't know why.

But with InsomniaT activated, hit the power botton and select Stop, the problem of black screen doesn't appears and, this time too, I don't know why.

Tuesday I'll go to a Genius Bar near me at the new Apple Store in Bologna, opened since today.

Ps. Sorry for my english :p

Similar problem with my iMac. Even if it's not set to go to sleep but always on, if I am not using it for a short time it powers down and then starts up again, it is an actual power down. No problem with SL before this, I am running with a clean install of Lion. It abated a little after 10.7.1 but now seems to be back with avengeance. I have reset the PRAM etc., no change.

Apple needs to hurry up with 10.7.2 to cure this. I understand it is aware of the problem (as well as iCal not syncing!)
