But is there a pattern, for instance, all people on a certain model/year?

No clue, but I'm on a brand new MBA and have no problem with checking mail on my iPhone and then on my Mac. It's all there.

The only thing that bugs me a little bit is that new messages appear in the inbox, but then they also appear in all of my Gmail folders. So I get a new message in the inbox, and it says I also have a new message in All Mail or one of my addresses that gets picked up by my mail Gmail account. Reading the message in the inbox does not mark it read in the other folder. I have to do that manually. I do not want to get rid of the folders, because I like having all of my All Mail folder on my computer, so I don't have to sign into Gmail to search for older stuff, but I'd like it to automatically be marked as read.

I'm not saying the SL Mac Mail is great, because there are a lot of problems on that for me too, but the loss of any email for a business can prove costly, so is there no fix to be able to hang on to the existing Mail programme until they sort this out, It's obviously a fault somewhere and they can't blame it on the IMAP servers because I'm guessing you're all using different hosts?

Have you tried rebuilding the gmail mailbox, highlight the inbox, then go to mailbox and rebuild, this usually resolves things when I have oddities like this

mine do get marked as read in other folders, but it isn't instant

for it showing unread an including other folders, are you referring to the number on the dock item, if so go to preferences and general tab and change the dock unread count box to inbox only

Sorry if you have already tried these

keyboard shortcuts in Lion Mail

I hope it's OK to branch this thread. For the record, I am having issues with IMAP also, to dot-mac/mobile me of all places. Only unreliably sends from my home. Often works when I try to re-send. Strange.

My real problem is with keyboard shortcuts to select which account will be used in a message. This worked great up to Lion; under Lion most of the shortcuts disappeared from the selection menu, and the one that remained did not work. I've deleted all the shortcuts from System Prefs -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts etc. Anyone know the format to re-enter them (so I can at least try and make them work again)? I can't find documentation anywheres.

Cheers

Mike

I can't tell you why you're losing emails, but I may be able to help with the search problem.

I was searching for a message containing a particular phrase yesterday, but for some reason, mail wouldn't find it. Spotlight on the other hand, found the email just fine. After a little Googling, I found the suggestion to "Rebuild" my mailbox. I did this with all my mail folders, and now search within mail works fine.

To do it, I selected all my mail folders, then selected "Rebuild" from the "Mailbox" menu.

Yay - worked for me! Thank you :)

The password thing is driving me nuts and its really difficult to get any work done. At random points through the day, Mail will forget the password for one of the 5 or 6 email accounts we use and force you to re-enter it. Problem is, often, if you re-enter it, it still thinks its wrong so won't let you send/receive any mails.

Has anyone found a fix for this that's worked yet? Seems like a pretty major flaw for Apple to have let get through the testing phase.

I have this issue too and it's always my three Hotmail accounts. I'd love to blame Microsoft as that's one of my favourite pastimes but in this instance I think it might just be the fruity one at fault.

Do NOT use POP this way. It was not designed for it. You will continue to lose emails if you do.

POP mail MUST be pulled into ONE device only. I suggest it be your desktop.

If you want to use e-mail from both, use IMAP. If your e-mail provider does not support this, get a proper e-mail provider.

Do not use it in what way? Make sure the "delete mail on the server" option is not on or your mail will not be visible from all devices.

I use pop, which worked fine for a few days. Then, I started noticing an error reporting a problem with the incoming server. Fixed that issue by rebuilding the account. Then, my outgoing server began acting up, prompting for my password, which I typed but it did not like. Back to rebuilding the account once more, and now going on 24 hrs with no problem. Fingers crossed!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

I don't think this is just Lion I had a similar issue on SL. New emails appear on my work mac and my iPhone but on my MacBook I have to quit and reopen sometimes to get new emails. This issue has carried over with Lion. I was thinking this was a mobileme sync issue - I'll try the rebuild mailbox idea and see what happens though.

Same for me

I have the same problem . I recreated the same account and now, it works. But all my old messages are lost.

I have Lion Mail issues too

1) Sometimes it won't close the message composition window when I click send (or use command-shift-D). Bothersome....

2) Mail also refuses to mark some messages (IMAP or Exchange) as read after I read them. I've attempted setting preferences like "Mark all messages read when opening a conversation" as this mostly occurs with messages in a thread. This hasn't helped. I actually have to context-click-> mark -> message as read to get it to work.

You're right, it can be done. But you have to know exactly what you're doing. And even then I can't recommend it. This is me speaking as a UNIX system administrator.

POP was not designed to be used in this way. IMAP was.

Exactly. I have friends that do this and I don't know how they can keep from ripping their hair out trying to keep track of what messages they've read or responded to or deleted. Never mind trying to set up a new device and downloading every last message stored on the server to their new device. What a nightmare!

Unless you get very little email, IMAP is the only way to go.

Lion - Can't send mail

I have difficulty sending mail since I downloaded Lion. MobileMe Chat tells me to 1. check online mail 2. delete mail account 3. open new mail account 4 force quit mail 5 open mail and wait a couple of minutes.

I do this routine sometimes 2 or 3 times a day.

It disrupts the date record in my Sent mail so I'm losing track of myself.

I'm in Costa Rica. Do you think this is about our minor and frequent hits to the intregrity of the internet signal here in this developing country?

Any other good ideas?

Lion Mail Forgetting Passwords

The password thing is driving me nuts and its really difficult to get any work done. I think this is a timeout issue where mail is not handling a response from the mail server properly.

When I get the request for a password, I just ignore it and cancel the message without entering the password.

This takes the mailbox off line. To get it back on line, you have to wait a bit, seconds or as long as you want, then go to the list of mailboxes, select the one that is offline, then click to get the mail from this box. It doesn't work to ask for mail from all boxes, just the one that's offline.

Versions of email being sent to gmail (imap) bin folder

After waiting several months for Lion and lurking to some extent on these forums I recently purchased my first of three planned Macs for my family. The wife's MBP is the first purchase and we love it but i have an annoying issue with mail.

My ISP in the UK is Virgin and i'm using their IMAP service which is GMAIL. I have not created any custom folders but there seems to be a folder called Important to which various emails seem to be copied into wether they be sent or recieved. This I can live with but I'm also seeing several versions of a single email that I compose and send being copied into my Bin folder.

last night I sent a single email to a contact which took me about 30 mins to compose. When I hit the send button, the Mail Activity section (at the bottom of the left hand pane) of Mail indicated that 30 emails were being sent. 29 of them immediately went into the Bin folder of the IMAP Gmail account. When I looked at them it seemed that each was a snapshot of the mail I had composed at roughly 1 minute intervals. The first email had a single sentence. The second email had 2 sentences. The third email had 2 sentences and a picture I had pasted into the email. As I went through each of the 29 emails I could see how the final single email had been composed.

I can only assume that somehow, somewhere, autosaves of emails I compose are being generated and then once the email is sent they are being dumped into the Bin folder.

Any advice on how I can disable this feature would be appreciated.

As a side note I'm also finding that emails are listed in both the Inbox and the All Mail folder. Once read in one folder I ts still listed as unread in the other folder. Is this an IMAP feature and if so, can it be changed so that once a mail is read in one folder it is updated as read in the other ?

Any help on this is appreciated.

Problems sending email with Mail 5.0

It's not about your internet signal.

I have a very similar problem in the UK. I can usually send email when away from home. But mail will not send when I am at home, not on any of my Mac devices. It is very frustrating.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Unable Receive POP

In Preferences>Accounts>Advanced; Authentication: Password did not work, Authentication: MD5 Challenge-Response WORKS!

I had problems with my ISPs POP accounts. Wave is a substandard version of Road Runner here in Hawaii. GMail worked fine.

Mail 4.5 in SL worked but Mail 5.1 when I upgraded to Lion put circles with an Alert triangle next to the mailbox. The 4.5 setting was Password and it carried over in the Lion upgrade.

I went through three levels of Apple Tech and it was referred to Engineering. After two weeks of trouble shooting with them, Engineering told me the problem only affects a few with small ISPs. They would not take action. The Case was closed.

I farted around some more and gave the MD5 setting a try.

I still think the Lion Address book and iCal suck. *Well, being able to have a bigger font size in iCal is welcome for these old eyes. *And the Auto Save that brings up the unSaved stuff from the last TextEdit is annoying. *I use TextEdit for a scratch pad. *How about something in Preferences for the Apple apps that allows me to turn them back to Snow Leopard like?

My problem with Mail on my new 21" G5 is that it seems to disappear on download - the progress bar tells me: "receiving 1 of 23, 2 of 23 etc" but after all are downloaded there might be only 5 new messages in all my folders. Any idea where the rest are going? I see the titles flash up on the progress bar and from both title and sender I can confirm they're not appearing when the download is complete.

Double Account in Apple Mail on Lion

I have one iMap account and four POP accounts and I have the same problem with doubling accounts - and more. Gmail stopped recognizing the password permanently, other POP accounts are acting up this way or that way periodically. I found a lot of similar complaints on the Internet but no answer yet. Any ideas?

Ever since installing Lion, my e-mail account appears DOUBLE in my inbox;
i.e., I have only ONE active e-mail account (IMAP) but this account appears TWICE (identical) in my Inbox (and Sent box). I'm also asked my password twice (or multiple times), when logging in into Mail.

I don't find any difference in these mailboxes, and can't manually delete either one of them.
:(

Anyone that can refer or solve this problem ? Have been reading this section, without finding a similar problem reported.
