I did read in one of the several reviews of Lion that you needed OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on board first. The word is already long out on Intel-PC machines not being able to use Lion. Let us know how your workflow and photographic apps work with Lion. I, for one, would be interested.:)

Will do! I am a bit disappointed seeing early reports that Aperture is not noticeably faster.

Question: I am planning on installing it on the old iMac first... But I also plan on selling the iMac as soon as I find a buyer... Would I be able to reinstall the OEM Snow Leopard back onto that imac once it is ready to sell?

Gee, I would think so, but I am not sure of technical aspects of doing so. As to speed, I think we will see some version updates on Lion and probably Aperture once Lion is up and running and the bugs shake out-and they will, they always do with OS changes. At least I remain hopeful. I am very comfortable with the file management system of Aperture. I am not a pro photog so my volume and workflow demands and performance are not as critical to me as to others whose livelihood depend upon it so I can sympathize with those who have concerns. I am still holding off for another few weeks before I push the button and download Lion.

Was there an expectation that Aperture would run faster?

Re: putting SL back on, I would think that you would be able to do so by simply booting from the SL install disk, wiping the drive, and starting over.

That's what I figured, but who knows these days. Im about to set up my other machine again and start the download : )

Well I have heard various anecdotes of Lightroom 3 getting a noticeable performance boost but Aperture appears the same.

That is correct but the "noticeable"... is a bit far fetched.. it does get speedier but I wouldn't call it a speed demon.. tested it with a library of about 5000 RAWs and loading it got moderately faster..

Interesting. I wonder what has improved such that LR or AP would run faster? Reading arstechnica's in-depth review did not seem to indicate any major under-the-hood improvements- or at least not the ones I would expect to result in applications running faster.

I found this site that has a fairly extensive list of apps and how they work with Lion. I am seeing some vendors upgrading their software to catch up with Lion.
Here's the link at Roaring Apps.

I upgraded to Lion and so far have had no issues what so ever.

Aperture 3 runs fine. Photoshop CS4 runs fine. Final Cut Pro 7 runs fine.

I have had no issues with upgrading, applications working, or general OS use. That being said I have never had an OS upgrade destroy anything and I understand that I'm probably in a minority of the "geek crowd" so you should back up.

As for all of the "little" changes such as inverse, ahem, excuse me 'natural' scrolling, invisible scroll bars, version control, auto-save, etc. the OS does make a lot of really big improvements. Someone mentioned Mail and iCal: amazing. Plus the system integration of online accounts like Google make things a lot easier.

And might I add one of the biggest reasons to upgrade now or in the near future. In a couple years when we're on the verge of getting OS XI and you're still using Snow Leopard and complaining your stuff doesn't work remember that just because you don't find it a worth while upgrade doesn't mean that everyone is going to keep you in mind.
If you don't incrementally upgrade your OS and computer hardware then you're going to get stuck spending a bunch of money all at once to get up to date. So while Snow Leopard may do everything you want, you may want to consider getting Lion as soon as you know all of the software you rely on will work.

Don't be the Mac equivalent of someone still using Windows 98 and IE 6 complaining that your computer doesn't work anymore :D

I virtually had no choice to upgrade to Lion unless I wanted to buy a used machine as Rosetta support is at an end. Been stuck with CS4 and Aperture 2 for too long. Aperture 2 never even was finished by Apple as far as I'm concerned. I'll admit was waiting anxiously to see what kind of specs the new mini server would bring, but now that I'm pleased with the hardware release of course Lion/Lion server will be pre-installed and SL may not even be a retrogradeable option..

Anyways, will be reporting in the near future hopefully mid-week how CS5.5 under Lion with SSD compares to my currently configured CS4 on a G5 dual core. haha.

Since I have Aperture 3, I am waiting on feedback from those users.:)

So far, I've seen no change in Aperture. They released an update just before Lion to get it ready, so I think it's probably pretty stable. Will let you know if I find any trouble.

Is there any way to get Aperture 3 to do a proper Lion style full screen mode? Where its just the standard app but bigger? The full screen I get is nowhere near as useful, can't properly edit photos etc within it.

Snow Leopard does everything I want. All my programs work great, sorry Lion, not this time. I see no reason to upgrde.

Exactly. Lion only adds things I DO NOT WANT, and does not add anything I have wanted AFAIK.

Hell, if apple had bought out the makers of better snap tool and implemented the tech in Lion I would have bought it.

Instead we get bogus consumer toy features like

"dissapearing scroll bars that look like your iphones!"
"full screen, just like your ipad!"
"A new spring board just like your iphones!"
"face time, just like skype!"
"new cool skins on your programs to make them look old fashioned and kitschy!"

Now some actual, verbatim "additions" from the horses mouth:

"Yearless birthdays- You can now add birthdays to your contacts without including a year." GREAT. FINALLY!

"Arrange apps any way you like - You can rearrange apps by dragging their icons to a new location or even to another page." SWEEEEET

I tend to agree with you all. There was nothing really compelling in the list of "features" that made me want to run out and download. I like iOS but I dont think it has a place on my desktop.

.......

Upgrading just for the sake of it is every big businesses dream customer.

Lion ate my laptop. I have been offline for several days recovering from it. My computer is the 08 MBP with the 2.5 GHZ processor. The video card is the GT8600M. After installing Lion I got multiple crashes, especially with my core apps of CS3 and A3. I did a reinstall of Snow Leopard and reinstalled Lion over that, but had the same issues. I got it running in Safe Mode and it was stable enough to do some troubleshooting. All of the CS3 apps had Java errors that prevented them from launching. Aperture was really a killer, the error message I got was that my video card wasn't compatible with the app. This is the same card that played just fine with SL. There are a ton of similar complaints in the Apple Support pages, and I'm surprised that I haven't seen a lot of major issues here in the forums. Apple has been rushing out updates for SL, and I will keep up with them for a while before I try this beast again.

Hard drives are cheap and you can never have enough enough of them. Honest!

Backup, backup, backup!

Carbon Copy Cloner is your friend. :)

Bad :apple:, Bad, bad!

I'm really insulted that Apple would release a major software update like this without, seemingly, extensive testing across product models.

See you all soon,

Dale
